Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, nonprofit communications Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

So although the original intent of going to the bridal show was to have a bee meet up, it was not to be. I also forgot that wedding shows/bridal shows/wedding fairs really get on my nerves. So, Mr. D and I hung around the show for as long as we could stand it, and I was able to snap a few photos before I was reminded that photography wasn’t allowed… whoopsies!

There were TONS of dresses at the show: booths full of dresses, models walking around in dresses, and girls trying on dresses… everywhere! Most of the stands were all the same, and they looked like this:

There was lots of white/ivory/champagne/gold poof. My favorite booth? Fur Coat, No Knickers.

Not only do they have a cute name, they were by far the most unique and interesting booth. I really hope I can visit their shop while I’m in London this weekend, and I suggest you sneak a peek online as well!

My other favorite sighting? A CHEESE CAKE! Not cheesecake, but a cake made out of CHEESE. While I have a cheese obsession, Mr. D has a cheese phobia, so as much as I would love this for our wedding, Mr. D would probably run screaming from the house.

At the end of our experience, we ended up in a line where they gave us a bag of chocolate and Nivea face cream. It was unexpected and a bit odd. Not to mention that Brummie (Birmingham) accents can be very hard to understand. Some of the vendors there might as well have been speaking French to me, because I honestly couldn’t understand them, so I just nodded my head. I was so embarrassed, but thankfully Mr. D acted as a translator.

Would you say wedding shows have been mostly helpful, or useless in your planning?

I think the wedding shows I’ve been to have helped me figure out what I didn’t want in my wedding. I think that’s useful :)

I haven’t been to any wedding shows and am not planning on going to any! The people I’d want to go with are out of state and I my FI would go, but would hate it! Doesn’t sound like I’m missing too much though!

a cheese phobia?! That’s blasphemy! Cheese is easily my favorite thing in the world other than Mr. Londonladybug. I freakin’ love that cheese cake, and may have to get one. Because I’m getting marred in London, I bet I could use that vendor. Do you happen to know who the vendor was?
I’ve found bridal shows overwhelming and not really that helpful. There’s a million people, and there’s no way to really have a proper talk with the different vendors. But then again, sometimes you stumble across a ‘cheese cake’ and it makes fighting through the crowds worth it!

I have never been and never want to attend a bridal show. But I would love a cake of cheese any day!

I recently went to a bridal show and really disliked it! Most of the vendors there were cheesy and annoying! Plus I now get phone calls, e-mails and mailers almost daily “thanking me” for visiting their booths when I only gave my info to one booth the whole time I was there!

They weren’t that helpful for me because I was living in Boston and planning a wedding in upstate NY- so meeting Boston vendors was no help.

The best things were all the free stuff- appointment for free makeup session at Clinique, gifts for opening registries, goody bags and stuff.

The best was a coupon for $50 off my dress at David’s Bridal and $20 off each BM dress. That savings, alone was worth it.

ditto Mrs. Gree Tea’s response. The only thing close to a bridal show I went to was at Swoozies…which I highly recommend.

Well, the free cake makes them worth the stress for me–in fact, I found my baker through a bridal show. I have also been able to get great deals on miscellaneous bric-a-brac from wedding shows, including my ring pillow, garter set, and cake server.

@londonladybug: I know, the cheese thing has been tough on our relationship! ;) He just can’t share my passion. I’ll look at the vendor list and figure it for you. I took a card but now I’ve lost it!

I have gone to one and that was plenty. I already had an idea of what I wanted to do and what I didn’t want to do. Now I just get bugged by all of the vendors!

Mr. Taffy is also ridiculously afraid of cheese! I am so excited that I have gotten him to eat fresh mozzarella and sometimes parmesan. ;)

I went to the San Diego Bridal Bizaar. It didn’t end up helping at all since our wedding will be in Colorado. And there were so many vendors throwing themselves at me, I was quite put off. I didn’t see ANY dresses at the runway show that I liked and I generally thought it was a HUGE waste of time (except that I was able to start three bridal registries…of which only one will actually be used…)

Our first week after getting engaged, my fiance’s mother sent me a lovely card and invitation to an upcoming bridal show, suggested I come and bring my mother. Eeek–I couldn’t say no, although the whole concept of a bridal show sounded terrible and scary.

We all went (fiance included) and it actually was not all bad. There was free food! Gelato, cake, teeny sandwiches. The vendors were nice. And the best part: we liked the venue so much we ended up booking it for our reception!
