Anchors Away…

March 17th, 2009 @ 9:26 am by Mrs. Gloss

Mr. Gloss and I looked EVERYWHERE (three different states, although Maine was our primary search location) to find that perfect/affordable venue. And we finally found one after about five months of searching, which seems like forever in the wedding world! We looked at lots of places, and researched way more, that had ‘Reception Packages’ and traditionally held/hosted Weddings. But, apparently I like to make things way more difficult than they need to be, as we elected to choose none of them.

One day, Mama Gloss and I tossed around an idea for a venue, and we chalked it up as something fantastical that would probably never happen. But we indulged ourselves anyways. There is a 100-year-old steamship that runs somewhat near the town where I grew up. There are regularly scheduled 3 or 5 hour tours, BUT it turns out you can also rent out the boat for private events. It costs $1500 for the first two hours, and something like $250 for each hour after that (which seemed pretty reasonable when compared to the rental charges of the other places that we were considering).

The benefits:

  • The sentimental value, since I pretty much grew up on the lake
  • It’s a very touristy area in the summer
  • It is local enough so that we could potentially get ’good deals’ on catering
  • I think it’s pretty unique
  • The boat holds up to 250 people and has indoor areas and outdoor decks…

The downfalls:

  • People might get seasick

Anyway, I got really excited and made a potential save-the-date mock-up, because what is a perfect venue if you don’t have the perfect invitation to go along with it? Mind you, at this point I had barely researched anything about potentially have a wedding on a boat and hadn’t even contacted the venue…

(Ignore the square corners, they will be rounded and the dashed line will be perforated.)

Are you having a wedding close to home? Does your venue have sentimental value to you?

I love your boarding pass! Very cute. I haven’t booked a venue yet but I’m pretty certain we’ve found it. and YES it has tons of sentimental value! It’s on Long Beach Island, off of NJ where I spent all my summers as child and it’s in a victorian home that used to be a B&B. The man and I love B&B’s, go to them as often as possible and he proposed in one too. It’s about an hour and a half away from where we live and where I grew up. Can’t wait to hear more!

Oh miss gloss, I’m so excited to see how your wedding turns out. I’m also getting married on 8/29/09 on a (less than 100-year-old) boat and I also did boarding pass STDs. Everyone raved about it. I especially like the perforated part for them to keep.

I used to work for the company that operates my boat venue and saw many a wedding as well as far more boozy events… seasickness was very rarely a problem, and that was on the Puget Sound. You should be fine on a lake.

I am a Wedding Planner for a boat company in Oregon - I highly recommend doing your wedding on a boat. Its such a cool way to show your guests the area, especially if it has sentimental value to you. Its so fun to use the nautical themes with the STD’s and invites - but just make sure you don’t overdo it! And don’t play the Gilligan’s Island theme if you are going on a 3 hour cruise…=)

The boarding pass is adorable. Our venue has TONS of sentimental value for us… we’re getting married a few yards from where we had our first kiss. But it is 9 hours from where we live now.

I love the save the date! Remember to add your required rentals (tables, chairs, table linens, napkins, glassware, tableware, china, bar) into your cons/budget since it is not a reception ready venue. Also ask the boat company for a list of caterers who they have experience working with - many times boats only have small galley kitchens, so you will want a caterer who already knows the ins and outs of catering an event on the boat to avoid any wedding day disasters.
