About Mrs. Stiletto

… And Charlie Makes Five

March 17th, 2009 @ 3:10 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Mr S and I love the companionship of our cats, Linus and Basil. They were both rescues from animal control, and they get along better than we ever could have hoped. As far as kitty life goes, theirs is pretty sweet - the expensive natural food, full reign of the house, a lot of lap time, and that sweet kitty condo you see in the picture below, purchased for them right before we bought our own condo. Their life is good.

However, as much was we love our furballs, they don’t respond well to walking on a leash. Go figure, right? That kitty stubbornness shines right through. So, we started thinking about getting a dog.

How great would it be to have a dog to take to the park? And to play fetch with? And to teach to do cool tricks? Our timeline was initially to wait until after the wedding, when things calmed down a bit and we weren’t spending a lot of time and money on “wedding stuff”.

But with a September wedding, we most certainly wouldn’t want to get a dog in the fall, with a harsh Chicago winter right around the corner. Hmm. So that would be, what, spring of 2010 when we could finally adopt?

Be forewarned - looking at dogs online quickly leads to visiting shelters. And once you visit a shelter, you are hooked! You’ve picked out your dog. Thought of names for him. Imagined him making doggy friends in your neighborhood, and curled up at the end of your bed.

We went to the Chicago PAWS shelter on Saturday… just to look. As far as shelters go, this one ranked off the charts. Honestly, it was more like doggy and kitty daycare than rough shelter life. Once we met this tail wagging, face licking beagle/foxhound mix, we knew that the holding off was probably out the window! We went home empty handed, but talked about him nonstop for the rest of the night, and on Sunday morning found ourselves headed back to the shelter to adopt.

Walking out proudly with our new family member Charlie, we were so excited… and so shocked that we actually had a dog! We’re excited to add him into the mix of our craziness as we continue to plan the wedding and gear up for a fabulous summer in the city with our new best friend.

How soon after (or before!) do you plan on extending your family?

Mr. Bru is such a dog person, but I’m definitely more of a cat lover…something we’ll have to resolve one way or another after the wedding!

How cute is Charlie? :) My fiancee and I adopted our first dog together last year and it was truly one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! He makes life even more exciting! I’ve been begging to get a second but have yet to win that battle. ;)

We already have a dog, but are waiting for dog #2 until AFTER the wedding. It is so hard to stop myself from looking online, and you are totally right - once you go to the shelter you will for sure end up getting a dog.

What an adorable dog! FI and I have wanted a dog for a long time and it’s actually one of the things we would talk about in the lead up to dating. (He would talk about getting a dog and I would tell him that I would visit and the dog would love me more than him.)

We still definitely want one, but right now with both of us in school we wouldn’t be able to give enough attention to a dog. We’re trying so hard to be patient and wait until we’re at a place in our lives (and perhaps live in something larger than an 800 sq ft apartment) where we can better take care of a dog.

Charlie is ADORABLE! He’s exactly the kind of dog I’ve always wanted. Maybe if I show fiance this picture he will be convinced!

Hope the transition goes well at home with the kitties. :-)

I miss having a dog so much, as much as I love our kitties, our family feels incomplete still. We’re hoping to get a pooch in the spring of 2010, so we can devote the time and energy to training/socializing, and so we don’t have to worry about finding a puppy sitter for our three week honeymoon! Good for you for supporting your local shelter!

I love dogs and Charlie is so adorable! I want to get once, especially since my FI has to work late about 2 nights a week…but I only want a dog a little before we have kids. I feel like dogs are like kids - and right now I’m way too busy to have the time to devote to either/or! :)

Congrats on your fur-baby! We got a Boston Terrier last fall in a very similar situation! Once you start “looking” it is all down hill from there.. and really there is no “good” time to get a dog, you’ve just got to go for it!

Congrats… I hope Charlie is getting along well with the other members of his fur family! I know our kitty is still adjusting to his new brother! :)

He is so cute! How is he getting along with your cats? I’m worried about this. My cat is a spoiled only child right now.

What a cutie pie.
Carl adopted us last winter. He currently lives with the FI’s parents until our wedding this July. He is seriously just like a child to us…and I think the responsibility of taking care of a “baby” has been good for both of us :)

We have a cat named Linus too!! He’s a black and white tuxedo type cat though. We got him over a year ago and about 6 months ago we got another cat, of course we named her Lucy. :) She’s a tortoiseshell coloring and quite the little dickens. Where Linus will run and hide when he hears the doorbell, Lucy runs over to greet everyone. Oh, and she also plays fetch!

So cute!! FI and I actually went to the Humane Society this past Sunday to look for a kitten. I wanted to go look at the dogs just to see them. I hardly got in the door before I completely broke down. To see so many adult dogs just staring back at me was heartbreaking. I immediately turned around and walked out, I just couldn’t do it. So I’m so glad to hear that you adopted a dog :) It’s a great thing.

My jaw dropped when I saw his picture- have you seen a picture of my Huckleberry??? They look like brothers. I *think* my guy is a Beagle/Jack Russel- as he is a shelter dog too. And he is the BEST dog ever. We just celebrated our 4 year anniversary together (I got him before Mr. PT)!! You are going to LOVE having a little dog in your life!

We’re training our new kitten to walk on a leash! Its going well so far. I came into the relationship with my cat Cosmo, my FH loves him.. but felt a little disconnected. So we got a kitten together during Christmas. It’s our blended kitty family! I can relate with the plush life you provide. Our cats have a 6ft condo and turn their nose at any food that’s not their expensive, organic chow. Good luck with your new dog- he’s beautiful!

Congrats congrats CONGRATS! And kudos to you for adopting from a shelter. When i’m not doing wedding related things - I’m doing rescue (dog and cat) work. So Charlie’s story warms my heart!!!!!!!! So happy he has a wonderful, furever home!

Charlie is so cute! Opting to adopt is so much better than buying, that’s amazing that you did that. No offense to all the people the spend money on getting a pure breed. I adopted a puppy last June because I just couldn’t wait. My FH adopted a kitty just before me and we are family of 4 now. We will probably expand our family and get another dog once we get a bigger house with a yard. But kids will probably come even sooner :)

We already have two rescued cats, and we added our Pup Ryder to the mix. My FI says that cats are just decoration LOL and he wanted a pet he could really PLAY with! Ryder keeps him on his toes!

PS-Charlie looks so CUTE! How could you NOT adopt a face like that!

Thanks all for the kind words! :) Charlie is adjusting well to us but it’s going to be a long road integrating him with the cats. Needless to say, our felines are not very thrilled with us and this “thing” we’ve brought into the house, but we’re working on it!
