Bring On the Madness!

March 17th, 2009 @ 11:51 am by Mrs. Joey

Since the “madness” will soon be upon us, I thought I’d share with everyone a few of the Joey traditions. Our first tradition has of course to do with the NCAA men’s tournament. Every year we put together a bracket, invite our friends to play with us, and always, ALWAYS watch the final game together. If we’re not in the same city, we still both watch and text or IM back and forth. I don’t know how or why it is a tradition, but it is. I look forward to putting together my bracket picks every year. Go Huskies!! (Sorry Pengy, I know you’re a Bruin.)

Our next tradition is the Annual Joey End of the Summer Bash. Since Mr. Joey is a teacher, we always end the summer with a party. We supply a half keg and mixers, and friends bring whatever else they want to drink. Sometimes we open up the grill so guest can BYO BBQ. It’s a great time. It’s not stressful at all, and cheap to throw. Summers are crazy and we always feel like we miss out on seeing everyone. I can’t wait to have our End of Summer Bash also be our housewarming party this summer. Our house building is right on schedule!

Our yummiest tradition has to be Thanksgiving. Every year we prepare a themed Thanksgiving meal. The first year we made all the traditional dishes, the second year we had Chesapeake inspired dishes (Virginia spoon bread, Old Bay Turkey), the third year we did Hawaiian food (Kalua turkey, spam fried rice), and last year we had New Orleans on the table. Hawaiian was the easiest and the tastiest, but they were all really great. This year we’re thinking Chinese or New Mexican. Thanksgiving is my favorite of “our” traditions.

Our last tradition is around Christmas. Every time we go on a trip together, we always buy a Christmas ornament from the city we visited. We have a great one from New Orleans of a crayfish playing the double bass. I was on Etsy one day (of course) and came across the custom ring bowls by Paloma’s Nest. It’s a little more than I wanted to spend on a ring pillow/bowl (like $20 more) but the more I thought about it, the more I realized: what bigger journey are we going to go on than marriage? It won’t always feel like a vacation, but I certainly hope it will be filled with many of them.

Mr. Joey liked the idea of the bowl doubling as our first ornament as a married couple, so I ordered it. We went with just our first names and the date.

What traditions have you developed as a couple? Are you incorporating any of them into the wedding?

I’m a Christmas-aholic ;-) so I love your ornament tradition…but your themed Thanksgivings are also totally appealing to my foodie side! :-) Thanks for sharing!

March madness! My senior year, my friends and I flew from NJ to Denver to watch our men’s team play in the first round. We got clobbered by Texas, but it was probably the best 36 hours of my senior year. Sadly, we didn’t make the tournament this year, so I have to root for other traditional underdogs (go ZAGS!).

Such fun traditions. Mr. Ducky and I decided to exchange ornaments every years so that one day we have a tree filled with all the ornaments we given each other during our marriage. We started this last Christmas.

Aww. March Madness. We were considering getting married over spring break- but it was ruled out for several reasons… one being my FH dedication to March Madness. He is giddy like a school girl. It’s ridiculous. :-S

I’m so not going to fit in but GO Blue! We made it back on the bracket =) yay!
I love love traditions but mostly bc I grew up without them. We moved around a lot and our “tradition” was being able to be with each other which I loved. I do however want to start many many traditions when I get married and have started to already coin different dates and activities as a must do. =)

The ornament idea is so cute and what a great way to incorporate your traditions into your wedding. We have traditions since we’ve moved to KY that mostly revolve around Derby. Every year no matter what we go to the Great Balloon Glow and to a Derby party at our friends’ house on the river. We also always cook a meal together for the holidays when we’re home whether it’s Thanksgiving or Christmas. I refuse to get take out or eat somewhere on those holidays and just because it’s the two of us is no reason not to cook to our hearts content - it’s become so fun to go shopping for all the ingredients and spend the day in the kitchen making a fabulous meal together. We have silly daily traditions like everyday before he leaves for work he says “love ya babe” whether I’m seeing him off at the door or he’s working out of town and he texts it before he leaves the hotel room too. I can’t wait for married life and kiddos to start more traditions that they can take with them :-D

Aww we do Christmas ornaments too!! We go a little overboard and sometimes get two or three. Even if we take trips on our own we always bring one back for each other. Love it!

Looks like we have a lot of of the same traditions, Joey! This past Thanksgiving we were in New Orleans, and the year before that it was a Hawaiian themed affair with the Mr.’s fam. And we also collect Christmas ornaments from our travels.
PS we are watching the Madness as I type this…
