About Mrs. Bruschetta

The LBD

March 17th, 2009 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

When you think of summer, what colors come to mind?

Yellows, definitely. Light blues, pinks, whites, sure. But black?

Yes! With the appropriate style, black offers a dark canvas — perfect for making summer florals go POP! And, with the right design and fabric, even a knee-length style becomes formal.

See? Dresses from the Jim Hjelm line (and family) were my original inspiration.

The bridesmaid dress search was surprisingly easy: first, a visit with Sister Bruschetta to try out countless options. We learned which dresses can make anyone look pregnant (goodbye, empire waists!), which were just plain uncomfortable, and which would fit the feel of our late summer, black tie (preferred) soiree.

Later, we made a second trip with all the girls to select the dress from a (much narrower) list of options. We quickly eliminated cleave-necks from the running — definitely not church appropriate! I saved my favorite for last, and everyone quickly agreed: the chosen gown’s (yes, it’s knee-length, but formal enough [in my opinion] to earn an upgrade from “dress”) tissue taffeta is deliciously luxurious. Universally flattering. And (::gasp::) rewearable!

Accessorizing the Amsales is the next hurdle.

I first thought of strappy, black dress sandals — and was quite content with this decision — until Mama Bruschetta pointed out the model’s metallic heels. At first I was torn, but now I’m all about the idea of silvery dress sandals.

I created an inspiration board to try and make sense of the options (and included some silver earrings, as each girl can wear her favorite [modest] pair; I’m considering nixing necklaces altogether).

Gorgeous dress and I love the silver shoes. The shimmer adds a little class and “pop” to the outfit.

I love the first and last metallic shoe! Definitely go with silver, especially if you will be incorporating other silver details

We’re doing LBDs as well, and we’re in July. The girls have been beyond thrilled. I like the silver shimmer as well… but black shoes would be more reusable.

(who am I kidding, I’d totally wear silver shoes again!)

I was a BM in a wedding in July and we wore the cutest black dresses and had bright flowers which really popped against the dresses. I think your dresses and silver shoes are going to look great!!

@Sezzy: Since each girl can pick her own silver strappy sandal, I’m hoping everyone can either use a pair they already have, or get a pair they can wear again in the future. Two of my bridesmaids are in another wedding before mine, with silver shoes as part of the attire as well!

I vote for silver. They will definitely get a lot of use out of them and they go with everything.

It all looks very nice together. I think the metallic heels are nice, but I think the black would work well too. And I looove that dress :). It’s very pretty and looks very flattering.

I’ve never thought of black for a summer wedding, but I think you’re right that it would make bright colors pop!

I think the metallics are snazzy. And they go with anything, so they’re totally rewearable too!!
