The Cake Trial

March 18th, 2009 @ 11:56 am by Mrs. Mascara

While back in the UP, my mom and I whipped up a trial cake to see how much work the fondant and gum paste is going to require. My mom makes wedding cakes all the time, but she’s never used fondant before. I realize fondant doesn’t taste very good, but we both think the wedding will be a nice way to broaden her horizons and use some different materials. Her cakes are quite popular in our little town. I think everyone coming to the wedding has eaten a cake or two or hers at some point, so using fondant on our cake will be a nice way to give our guests a little something unexpected.

My mom baked the cake and frosted it with her famous frosting recipe while I made the gum paste flowers. I set the flower petals aside for them to dry when I was finished. Then I helped her roll out the fondant (we used the box kind, since this was our first trial) and we placed it on the cake. After smoothing it out, I added a little border with more fondant to the bottom to make it look more finished. The last step was to “glue” the gum paste petals together with frosting (you are actually supposed to use royal icing, but I was lazy) and place the finished flower on the cake.

The Cake Trial : wedding cake diy Dsc 037

The Cake Trial : wedding cake diy Dsc 03701 I probably should have let the gum paste dry longer, but I was in a hurry. For the real thing I’ll make the flowers well in advance so they will retain their flowery shape. But for the amount of work we put in to this little cake (not much at all), I think it turned out pretty cute! And it definitely gave us the confidence that we can use the fondant and gum paste on the final cakes!

Is anyone else having someone they know make their wedding cake?

Great job Miss Mascara! :)
Fondant is such a pain to work with in my opinion!
As much as I love to bake I won’t be taking on this task for the wedding day.
My Mr.’s Uncle is a pastry chef and will be baking our cake! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It makes it more special knowing it was baked by a loved one.

Wow!! That is amazing! We found an amazing girl who’s still in school but her work is amazing. I don’t’ cook or bake and I don’t know if right now is the time to experiment. I’m very jealous tho!

It looks really nice. I think the the actualy wedding cake will be beautiful and a special memory.

I made my own wedding cake, but used buttercream instead. I kept it simple; 3 stacked tiers, ribbon and fresh flowers, but it looked great, and tasted even better.

That IS pretty cute! It looks quite small…how big is it in reality?

It’s amazing how many of you are making your cakes (even if it’s with help)! It looks amazing!

I will stick to the less intense DIY stuff!

Wow, that looks nice! I wouldn’t know how to begin making gumpaste flowers. I have a friend who bakes, and who has made several-tier wedding cakes before. I’m going to ask her to make my cake (and pay her of course!).

That is really cute :)
I wanted to have one of my BMs make my cake (or I should say FH wanted) but I couldn’t ask her to do that and be involved in other wedding stuff, so she is making on of her famous bride barbie cakes for one of my showers :)

It looks great! I love the flower. Actually I’ve been trying to figure out our cake design, and I might borrow that idea. ;)

My mom’s best friend from HS (who is also a pastry chef) is making our cake! We lucked out there.

Like you mom, my aunt is well known for her cakes and she insisted on making my wedding cake but I dont want anyone bothered with doing that. I want her to enjoy the wedding and not have to rush around (she is always late attending the event beccause she is making the cake or favors).

Great job on the flowers!!
