The “L” Word…

March 18th, 2009 @ 6:38 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Let’s talk about the “L Word”….

No, not ’love’… LINENS!

The L Word... : wedding decor reception Tablecl01 Let’s talk about how our potential rental company thinks they can charge $30 to rent a plain white tablecloth. Can’t you actually purchase them at that price? No, you can’t. You can actually purchase them for much cheaper, like $17.

Hello?

That’s almost half off, and I would own them! But what would I do with 20 tablecloths after our wedding? Storage is key in the Glossy household, and apparently tablecloths en masse weigh a ton. I’ve never held 20 tablecloths, but they must be pretty beefy if people are looking to charge me $140 for shipping and handling.

So, in true Miss Gloss fashion, I asked myself, “How can I make this work for less $$$?”

Option #1: Rent from a linen rental company. Cost - $9.99! This seemed reasonable until they tacked on $140 for S&H (to and from included).

Option #2: Make them. I can get a 15-yard bolt of muslin at Jo-Ann fabric for $107. If I waited for a 50% off coupon, that would be around $13/table. And maybe I could do an in-store pick up to avoid shipping and handling charges. I don’t think muslin would look terrible with our design scheme, but it might need to be tested.

Option #2.5: Buy 45″ wide fabric and have a seam run down the middle. We will have runners down the centers of the tables, so you wouldn’t see the seam except at the ends hanging down, which would be drape-y anyways. I would just need to locate some fabric for like $.99/yd. (which hasn’t happened yet) putting each table at around $9, or around $14 if the fabric was $1.50/yd.

Option #3: Give up on floor-length tablecloths. The smaller tablecloths are only 7 to 8 dollars to rent from our rental company. Would people really notice if they didn’t go to the floor with all the chairs pushed in? Also, we will be outside, so maybe it would be normal to have shorter ones.

What do you guys think? How important are floor-length linens?

I didn’t even THINK about whether our caterer’s linens would be floor length or not, and then when someone asked, I started having horrific thoughts about how the shorter ones would look. However, you bring up a very good point that outside, people really will not expect floor length linens. I say, go with the cheaper, shorter linens. With great centrepieces, an outdoor venue and some jazzy table runners, people really won’t notice (and no work for you!)

I would definitely go with the shorter ones (personally). I tend to dislike the floor-length anyway because they get stepped on and rolled over with the chairs.

So, being outdoors, they would probably be a wiser choice all-around! (No dirty = no surprise cleaning fees ;)

Besides, no one will even notice when there’s such a pretty bride (and groom!) to admire! ;)

I think you might be better off having short if you’re outside…there’s always klutzy people like me who push their chairs in on top of the cloth, etc. Also with the possibility of grass and so on shorter clothes might make things easier and stay cleaner longer.

I do like the clean look of floorlength linens. I’m jealous I don’t have the sewing know-how like some other talented bees!

I think it depends on the table and the venue space, but I usually prefer floorlength linens though. I say go with option #2 or #2.5. :)

I wouldn’t worry about floorlength lenins, but that may be my own personal aesthetic appeal. Plus, I generally don’t like feeling like my lap is covered with cloth that I’ll probably rip when I pull my seat back, anyway :)

I’ve found some good linen deals at the following website:

http://www.weddinglinensdirect.com/ortaovgo.html

I haven’t ordered from them yet. Has anyone used them?

NOT important! Go with the shorter ones to save the money. I promise no one will walk away from the wedding thinking about the tablecloths. Promise.

Order them from efavormart.com. Their floor length linens are very cheap and good quality. You can always sell them after the wedding!

I don’t think that it really matters what length the linens are, but if you can *really* sew, here’s an awesome project:

Miss Gloss, I totally understand your dilemma! I am in the same boat and have looked at all the options, as you have. It is unbelievable how expensive 120 inch round tablecloths are to buy or rent! I thought about making the cloths myself, but I’m not sure the savings are big enough to make the time and energy worth it. Plus, whatever savings I did make would be spent on the runners I would get to hide the center seams…I might end up just using shorter tablecloths because they seem to be easier to find, and they are cheaper. I would love to hear what you decide to do! Best of luck.

They’re really not important. We’re renting floor length linens for the cake table and the head table only. But then, I’m not inviting Martha Stewart.

I rented from the following website. They are based in PA, and I live in AR. They arrived exactly as scheduled. If you are going with polyester, they have great prices AND great shipping!!!

Our wedding contact at the venue recommended we just go with the shorter table cloths - she showed us photos of her wedding at the same venue with the shorter ones and you really couldn’t tell the different with all the chairs and people in the room. I was nervous about the aesthetics of it as well, but after seeing the pics, I’m glad we went with the free option!

I think the shorter length will be perfect for outside. I thought about purchasing linens, but J nixed that right away… we already have a room for of things I bought that I don’t know what I’ll do with after the wedding!

we’re having an outdoor garden wedding and the shorter linens definitely looked better for us… of course it depends on how formal your affair is but i guarantee you that no one will know the difference

Was considering sewing/hemming my own; however, I’m not a SewingBee. Now that I’ve read this I’m re-considering.

From what I read here, there’s no way to get floor-length linens without a center seam b/c fabric doesn’t come wide enough.

True?

I plan to check out the sites recommended by JennyBryde and MissJoyner.

Thanks Bees.
