I’ve been dropping hints for a while now (skull and crossbones on the Fruit-Roll-Ups?! Pirate ships on the invitations!?), but now that our invitations are out and guests have seen them, I can tell you all about the Kitten Wedding Pirate Party!
Yes, I said Pirate Party! Instead of having a large rehearsal dinner where we invite all of the out-of-town guests (which is everyone at a destination wedding!) we decided to have a fun, pirate-themed party aboard a pirate ship in Grand Cayman!
The party will be two nights before our wedding, instead of the night before (allowing our guests, many of whom will be on the island from Thursday-Sunday, to have a night to themselves in between all the wedding events). The 2.5 hour cruise will take us to see the beautiful Caribbean sunsets around Grand Cayman, as we enjoy the open bar and appetizers.
The idea started as a sunset cruise around Grand Cayman. After checking out our options, some of the best reviews I found were from a company that runs tours on recreated pirate ships. The crew of the ship wears pirate outfits, but the passengers usually don’t. But don’t tell that to my wedding guests! This welcome party has turned into a full-fledged pirate-themed costume party extravaganza! On the “Activities” insert of our invitation suite it even states, “Pirate Attire Recommended!”
My parents were surprised when I proposed a Pirate Party at first, but (after the initial shock) they have lovingly started to call it “The Booze Cruise” (and they don’t even drink!). My dad (not to be confused with Dadzilla) has even decided that it is his duty to judge a pirate costume contest during our time on the ship!

Mr. K and I aren’t very serious people; so we thought a campy, crazy-themed welcome party would be the perfect way to inject our personalities into the wedding week festivities. We shared our very first kiss at a Halloween costume party, so it’s pretty appropriate that we would wrap up our courtship in the same fashion! The actual wedding and reception will be a much more elegant affair, so I am glad we are taking the chance to throw a lighthearted welcome party for our guests. I really hope our Pirate Party will be a great way for everyone to mingle and get to know each other. I know one thing—those pirate costumes will be great icebreakers!
