Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!

The Pirate Party!

March 18th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Kitten

I’ve been dropping hints for a while now (skull and crossbones on the Fruit-Roll-Ups?! Pirate ships on the invitations!?), but now that our invitations are out and guests have seen them, I can tell you all about the Kitten Wedding Pirate Party!

Yes, I said Pirate Party! Instead of having a large rehearsal dinner where we invite all of the out-of-town guests (which is everyone at a destination wedding!) we decided to have a fun, pirate-themed party aboard a pirate ship in Grand Cayman!

The party will be two nights before our wedding, instead of the night before (allowing our guests, many of whom will be on the island from Thursday-Sunday, to have a night to themselves in between all the wedding events). The 2.5 hour cruise will take us to see the beautiful Caribbean sunsets around Grand Cayman, as we enjoy the open bar and appetizers.

The idea started as a sunset cruise around Grand Cayman. After checking out our options, some of the best reviews I found were from a company that runs tours on recreated pirate ships. The crew of the ship wears pirate outfits, but the passengers usually don’t. But don’t tell that to my wedding guests! This welcome party has turned into a full-fledged pirate-themed costume party extravaganza! On the “Activities” insert of our invitation suite it even states, “Pirate Attire Recommended!”

My parents were surprised when I proposed a Pirate Party at first, but (after the initial shock) they have lovingly started to call it “The Booze Cruise” (and they don’t even drink!). My dad (not to be confused with Dadzilla) has even decided that it is his duty to judge a pirate costume contest during our time on the ship!

The Crew of Our Pirate Ship!

Mr. K and I aren’t very serious people; so we thought a campy, crazy-themed welcome party would be the perfect way to inject our personalities into the wedding week festivities. We shared our very first kiss at a Halloween costume party, so it’s pretty appropriate that we would wrap up our courtship in the same fashion! The actual wedding and reception will be a much more elegant affair, so I am glad we are taking the chance to throw a lighthearted welcome party for our guests. I really hope our Pirate Party will be a great way for everyone to mingle and get to know each other. I know one thing—those pirate costumes will be great icebreakers!

Are you doing anything out of the ordinary for your wedding? How do you expect people will react?

We injected a bit of pirate into our wedding too. We aren’t using it on the wedding day, but have some scattered evidence of pirates.

Oh my gosh, this sounds like so much fun! I’m sure your guests will love something totally different before the wedding — and you should get some great pictures from the pirate party as well! ;-)

What fun!? I love this idea and CAN’T WAIT to see pictures!!! :)
My fiancee and I are getting married on a Sunday now because our original venue is closing.
Now on Saturday afternoon we will be throwing a big get together at one of our favorite sports bars.
Our beloved Virginia Tech Hokies will be playing that afternoon and since most of our wedding guests are huge football fans we think they’re going to love it!
I feel certain your guests are going to love the Pirate Party as well!

OMG that sounds like so much fun! I can’t wait to see all the pictures from this party :)
Did you hire a photographer for the party?
FH and I had wanted to do a BBQ rehearsal dinner but it just didn’t work out. We are interjecting a lot of our personality into the wedding reception though.

So much fun! We’re not serious people either. We want our rehearsal to be 80s prom themed!

that sounds awesome miss kitten!! we’re having our rehearsal dinner at an upscale mexican restaurant in our town. my fiance and i absolutely LOVE mexican food…we eat it on average once a week! we thought this would be a good way to inject our personalities into the wedding. we’re not very serious people either and while the wedding will be more formal and elegant, this dinner is just about having fun with your closest friends and family - with margaritas! we even are planning to have a mariachi band play! i can’t wait!! it’s going to be so lighthearted and fun!! :)

This is a GREAT idea. First, it’ll set a really fun tone that will hopefully roll into the reception. Second, it gives everyone something in common and I bet it will be a great icebreaker. :)

The pirate ship sounds like a blast. It’s going to be so laid back and your guests will have tons of fun.

We actually had a pirate themed welcome party as well. I remember wanting to incorporate these cute temporary tattoos that Mrs Grasshopper had at her wedding, but I just didn’t have time to get around to it.

Scroll down to the last photo of them showing off their fun tattoos. So cute!

So fun! We’re having a DW in Jamaica next year and I was planning to have a beach party blowout on the night that most of the guests are arriving. We’re pretty laid back so the traditional welcome dinner is not really our style. I think your guests are going to have a blast, can’t wait to see the pics!!

I love the idea of a pirate party! I am jealous as I am secretly obsessed with them. We are having our rehearsal dinner (for all guests) at a funpark, complete with min-golf, go-karts, arcade games, etc. It will be tented with checkered tablecloths, BBQ, sunflowers and a bluegrass band. I can’t wait!

By the way, I have actually BEEN on that cruise. I was with about 100 of my friends on a group cruise that ported there for a day - we had a blast. It was a ton of fun. :-)

The pirate cruise on Cayman is so much fun! It’s one of my favorite memories of living there. It’s known around the island as a surefire recipe for a hangover the next day though!
