Wedding Transportation

March 18th, 2009 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Mascara

One of the disadvantages of getting married in a small town is the lack of limousines to rent for wedding day transportation. The only limos available are from about 1980, and people drive them around as their actual cars. Driving around in one of those on our wedding day? No thank you. Luckily for us, Mr. Mascara’s dad happens to own a 1936 Chevy Sedan that he’s been fixing up for the past year or so.

I think this picture was taken before a lot the fixing up began. It looks much better than this now, I swear! It is definitely better for us to leave the ceremony in this rather than in Mr. M’s truck, although that would be pretty funny, and not that surprising in the UP.

I think this sign or some variation of it would be perfect to hang on the back of the car for our exit! Sounds like a DIY project to me! Templates for the sign are available at Martha Stewart.

How are you jazzing up your getaway car?

Regardless of how good it looks fixed up now, I’d use the car I see in the photo! Its awesome. Then again, where I’m from, its not unusual to see someone leave a wedding in a brand new John Deere tractor (”but its a $150,000 tractor!” they say- *covers head in shame that these people might be my family members**).

Use the sedan! Its great!

I love the idea of a classic car — but we’re hoping to walk off into the sunset (so to speak) as our “getaway” at the end of the reception. :-)

Despite the fact that we live in a large city, our bridal party is entirely too big (23 folks in total) for any standard limo or even limo bus option. Our solution? We’re going retro-you know, before limo SUV’s were invented. We’ve coordinated to have about 6-7 cars follow us and honk and just make a huge spectacle downtown. Perhaps I’ll see if we can add that to the back of our car!

I love the classic car idea.

We went to/from our ceremony in this:

And arrived at the reception (after pictures) in this:

Both free of charge! The black car was a friend’s and he even drove us put champagne in the back and everything. The VW my father built for me when I was 16.

lucky you! great car! (btw, you made me giggle with your very matter-of-fact “80’s limos that they drive as their everyday car.”)

Love the car and for sure put signs on! I have the same issues with finding limos/cars/etc in a small town!! Thank goodness for your FFIL’s talent with cars!

Wow I’m jealous!! I would love a car like that for our wedding day! We live right next door to our vendor, which is a historical mansion. So renting a limo just seems silly! So we’re probably going to rent a blue mustang convertable for the weekend! :)

I am sooo jealous. I grew up going to a lot of car shows with my stepdad as a kid, and I really wanted to find a beautiful classic car like this to rent for our wedding day. I wasn’t able to find one, and so we went the “boring” limo route. You’re a lucky lady!

I hear you on the transportation!! We’re in the same boat here. I picked up a great sign from etsy seller kisforcalligraphy. Now, we just need a car to put it on!

We are going to use a classic car (a Bentley) - spray paint some cans white (just a few) and tie them together with bright colored ribbon and maybe a just married sign!

Is the back window of the car pretty vertical? The car we’re using has a pretty slanted back window and I don’t think a hanging sign like yours would work for us (but it’s so cute!).

I made that banner to hang over the bagel and pastries table at our brunch and have been thinking it would be cute to take it down and put it on the car afterward for our drive back home (about three hours).

I’ve been coveting that Just Married sign. I tore it out of the issue when I first got engaged, and its on my back burner of things I’d like, if I get around to making it!

i would die for that car! I’ve been looking all over my state for someone with a car like that to usher me around on my wedding day. I’ve only got responses from people with cars from the 1970’s. Too cheesy. I want something classic like what you have. There is only one company in my state that does classic car rentals, but they want to charge me over $300 for us to ride in the car for 5 minutes from church to reception. Way overpriced.

How I wish I was you with your family connections. Or I just wish I lived in the UP so I could pay your dad to drive us around too.

I laughed so hard reading the part about the 80s limo…it totally made me think of The Wedding Singer!

I’m so envious… that car is sweet! I’d take it over a limo any day.

Right now, it looks like we may be riding off into wedded bliss in my orange VW Beetle Convertible. Cute, but not terribly vintage or romantic. If we go with it, I’d probably dress it up with a little sign and a few pom-poms, ala Martha. http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/good-things/pom-pom-car-decoration

I loved that MS sign for a while, but i’ve never thought of it on a car before! I think that would be a lovely touch, and you could color-coordinate it to match the car or your wedding colors.

Awesome! West Coast Groom’s Dad is really into classic cars, and we’ve been trying to find a way to incorporate his ‘55 Chevy into the wedding. It’s in pristine, original condition–robins egg blue with white wall tires and white leather interior. It’s way cute……since our wedding is in a semi-remote area, down a logging road that would destroy it, we’ve decided to have his drive us to the rehearsal dinner in it instead! West Coast Groom’s grandparents and parents have a photo of themselves in front of the car on their wedding day, so we had to figure out some way to make it work!

Our getaway car, owned and restored by Mr.KJ’s Dad, will be an antique woody. Mr.KJ’s Dad owns a few antique cars, but this will likely be the only one that will fit my dress in it. I saw the MS “Just Married” sign too and thought it would be a great addition.

A photo of it’s likeness (not that actual car though):

I can’t wait to see your photos in your recap!
