Mrs. Peep Toe, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, Policy Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Olive Oil Production Manager Engagement Date: December 16, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: November 26, 2008 Venue: Hotel Vitale About Me: I am a west coast lady who loves the San Francisco Bay Area. I love living with Mr. Peep and our animals: Huck the Dog and Ferris the Cat. I work to save the environment in San Francisco, while Mr. Peep makes ridiculously delicious Olive Oil. About Mrs. Peep Toe

Wine country may not be my hometown, but Mr. Peep lived in Sonoma and Napa County for about nine years. He was living in Napa for the first 1.5 years of our relationship, so I’ve spent a fair amount of weekends with various visitors traipsing through Wine Country. For all of you wanting to get out of the city and explore Wine Country, consider this post to be written with heavy consultation from Mr. Peep, an almost native.

I also must preface this post: Mr. Peep isn’t a fan of big built-up wineries, so you won’t see any of those on the list. We also love finding a wine that is a great deal for the money. As Mr. PT says, anyone can make a great $100 bottle of wine, but can they make a good $20 bottle, too?

And finally, our #1 rule of wine tasting: if you like it, great!! There are no rules as to who says a wine is good or bad. All that matters is that you enjoy drinking it!

In the vein of my previous post, and some of Mr. Peep’s favorite books growing up, think of this post as a “choose your own adventure”.

2

First choice: choose the region that you want to visit. While wine country can look pretty easy to navigate on a map, the roads are small and windy, so for a perfectly relaxing minimoon, I’d choose one of the regions below for a weekend, or two for a longer weekend. What ever you do, don’t attempt all of them unless you have a week.
3
The three regions that I am going to focus on are: Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Healdsburg. Each has something different to offer. To over-generalize: Napa Valley is most known for Cabernets and Chardonnays, and it’s probably the most built up (read: expensive). Northern Sonoma is more known for Pinot Noirs, Cabernets, and Sauvignon Blancs. It’s probably the least built up, which gives you a feeling of the Napa of about 15 to 20 years ago. Healdsburg is quite possibly Mr. PT’s very favorite place—he lived there for two years and would love to move back. It’s generally known for Zinfandels and Sauvignon Blancs, and some Pinot Noirs. The town square itself is pricey, but I love the wineries and the people in the area. Here’s a map to get you situated:

4

So you’ve chosen to spend a few days up in Napa Valley:

Heading up from the Bay Area, your first stop is one of the most beautiful wineries you’ll hit: Domaine Carneros. Although it’s technically in Sonoma, it’s a perfectly romantic place for a minimoon (I’ve even seen a proposal on the deck). Make sure you sample one of their scrumptious flights of sparkling wines.

5
source

Next, go straight to the City of Napa and go to the Vintner’s Collective. It’s a group of small wineries that are too small to have their own tasting rooms, but the wine is awesome!! It allows you to taste a bunch of great wine in one setting. For lunch, walk across the street to Pizza Azzurro (where Mr. PT and I had our first date) or drive over to Ox Bow Public Market. The market is based on the idea of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, and a great place to taste some local fare. And within walking distance is the brand new Westin, which might be one of the best deals in Wine Country.
6
After lunch, head North, to Cliff Lede (maybe you can sample some sparkling wine made by Mr. PT), and if you have some major bucks to spend, stay at the phenomenal Poetry Inn. We also like Miner and Chimney Rock. And if you want a truly unique and personal experience, take a few hours out of your day and make an appointment at Newton Winery.

For dinner, go to my all time favorite restaurant: Zuzu. It’s fun, romantic and perfect for a minimoon. Before you head out of town, ask a local for directions to Las Palmas Mexican Food!!

If Sonoma is more your speed, make your first stop at Larson Family Vineyard. It’s a great low key place for wine novices, and I absolutely love their Roses. We also love VJB Vineyards and Frank Family. A stop at the fantastic Olive and Vine is a must, which also has an amazing cheese shop attached to it. If you have a bit of money, I’d recommend staying at the Carneros Inn. It’s amazingly beautiful, but if you want to save your bucks to buy wine, I’d recommend staying at the El Pueblo Inn. Have dinner at the Girl and the Fig, but be sure to make reservations. Other places nearby to check out are Gloria Ferrer, the Cornerstone Gardens and B.R. Cohn, where Sister Peep got married.
7

So you’ve chosen Healdsburg: our absolute favorite!! A few wineries we love are MacPhil for some Pinot Noir, Dutcher’s Crossing, Quivera, and the Family Wineries, which is another collective where I’d suggest sampling Forth, Amphoria, and Dashe Cellars. I also wouldn’t miss making a reservation at Unti (or in a pinch, just try walking in).
9
You must stop off at Diavola Pizzeria for lunch, and Scopa for Dinner. Both are so amazing. I’d recommend resting your head at Hotel Healdsburg for a splurge, or the Dry Creek Best Western for a good deal for the money.
9
Once you’ve eaten and drank your way through Wine Country, don’t forget to pamper yourself a bit. If you are in Napa Valley, take the time to drive North to the Hot Springs in Calistoga. A local favorite is Dr. Wilkinson’s Hot Springs. If you are in Sonoma, the Spa at the Sonoma Mission Inn is fantastic. And in Healdsburg, Hotel Healdsburg’s spa is beautiful.
10
In the end, half the fun of wine tasting is choosing your own adventure, so if you are driving around and you want to stop, by all means stop and check something out. You may find your favorite wine of the day!

And that’s all we have time for today (let me know if you are interested in driving up to Anderson Valley).

This has been Wine Country livin’ according to the Peeps.

Do you have a favorite local winery??

We’re going to San Francisco for 4 days as part of our honeymoon trip.
Question. Can you do Sonoma as a day trip? Or is it best to stay the night? I’m thinking it’d be nice to have a nights rest and a place to stay even if it’s just the night.

Beautiful pics!
We are huge wine lovers, but after being in Europe for awhile we are not very inclined to spend $$ on it. The wine we enjoyed overseas was so delish and cheap! Thank you so much for this post, we are planning a mini-moon and Cali is one of our choices, Healdsburg seems lovely!

@Laura: It can be done as a day trip, but to enjoy the day (and the wine), I’d totally recommend spending the night. If you think you are really going to get your drink on- I *might* suggest a tour bus that leaves from the City, but I can’t say I’d really recommend the wineries that they would go to.

PS Something I didn’t mention: be very careful if you do a bicycle tour through wine country- as I said before the roads are small and lots of accidents have been known to happen. While you might be sober on your bike- the guy who rented the convertible going 60mph may not be.

Thanks, Miss Peep Toe for this post. FI and I were originally thinking about going abroad for our honeymoon, but with the economy and our wedding expenses to date, FI brought up Napa for honeynoom. We’ve always wanted to go up Napa, but just never made it up there. I will definitely have FI read your post.

We did exclusively local (Maryland) wines for our wedding, and I don’t think a single one of them was more than 12 bucks. We drink mostly white wines, so rather than obsessing about reds, we bought half a case of one we happen to know we like, and half a case of what won the Governor’s Cup that year.

Family-wise, this wasn’t a risk, because my family drinks mostly beer, and his family drinks mostly Franzia, if you see where I’m coming from. But friend-wise…I’ve got a number of friends who like to be disdainful about local wines for no other reason than the fact that they’re local. You know the type. On top of that, the officiant works part-time at a wine store just to amuse himself, and tours Italy once every two years at a minimum. So we were opening ourselves up to untold mockery–maybe not at the wedding itself, but certainly in the future.

Everybody went home happy. We got a few backhanded compliments like “it was so good, I couldn’t believe it was from Maryland” or “when I saw the label, I figured it’d be undrinkable,” but even the snobs had to admit: it doesn’t have to be a big name with a big price to be good.

If you like it, drink it.

Two other great places to stop in Sonoma are Frick and Preston Family Vineyards. If you visit Preston on a Sunday, you can get a hand-poured JUG (3 liters, I think?) of their special red for a very low price and it is absolutely fantastic. Nothing like a jug of wine to get the party started.

My Family has always gone to V. Sattui in St. Helena, we’ll grab some Keifer and have a picnic on their front lawn.

I’m stealing your Napa itinerary for my OOT bags! We’re getting married at the Opera House in Napa and as non-wine drinking natives of Wine Country we were drawing a blank on what to suggest to our guests. Thanks! For any beer drinkers; Third Street Aleworks in Santa Rosa makes great ale and has BBQ clams durring the Wednesday night farmers market in the summertime.

My hubby and I got married at a Virginia winery so it’s very near & dear to our hearts! King Family Vineyards - the wine is excellent and the scenery gorgeous. We haven’t had a chance to do CA wine country yet but it’s at the top of our list - thanks for the great info.

Since you did an awesome wine country post, I sadly have not been to Napa or Sonoma yet but would love to go and sample CA wines.

My finace fancies himself a wino and I just wanted to make a quick plug for Concha y Toro has some GREAT expensive and inexpensive wines- you’re so right on with a good winemaker being able to make inexpensive as well as expensive wines! Pick yourself up a couple Trio wines by Concha y Toro at Bevmo today;)

I absolutely 110% agree with you that finding a $20 good bottle of wine is much harder than finding a good $100 bottle of wine.
We too prefer the smaller wineries.
There’s a trail up in Canada called the Niagara Wine Trails. There was this little shack of a winery with a beautiful vineyard. The FI found this amazing bottle of Pinot Noir that was only $15. Less than a year later wine critics starting taking note of this particular Pinot Noir. The price jumped to over $150. With that came success and growth to that tiny shack of a winery.
The beautiful barn tasting “room” was “remodeled” to a fancier modern barn. Note. All steel. HORRENDOUS triangle aluminum storefront entrance plopped in front of a old barn.
So this once beautiful rustic winery with amazing wine got caught up in their success. And in my opinon their wine -that is more $$$ than ever- is not up to par to what it used to be 2 years ago. And I don’t think it has anything to do with the grapes or the year.
That being said we would love to have a wine trail weekend in Napa Valley one day!

Great summary Miss Peeps. I can only second you on the Carneros Inn. If you’ve got a little $$$ to spend, for my money it’s one of the top luxury resorts around. In that Northern California meets High WASP meets farmer kind of way. The pool in the summer. Ahh. And the foood.

@thelittlethings: Actually Mr. PT and I love going to wine country right around that time to get Thanksgiving Day Wine. The leaves probably won’t be on the vine. But it is less crowded and you could probably get some off season deals. Be prepared that it could rain, but I say go for it!!

Great post!

We chose Napa for our vay-cay a couple of years ago–we had so much fun! As mentioned by a PP, Frank Family is great; we came home with a couple bottles of their chardonnay (and we’re not big chardonnay drinkers and a bottle of bubbly. Our favorite tour was Frog’s Leap. Their wines aren’t bad, either! We thoroughly enjoyed Goosecross Cellars. The lady doing the pouring at Conn Creek was so unfriendly that we left the tasting before it was finished (that’s sooo not like us). Quintessa is such a cool looking place, definitely worth checking out if you’re into that kind of thing. Peju was also absolutely beautiful. Vincent Arroyo had great wines and a fun tour guide–gotta love that they named two of their wines after their dogs. Loooooved Chimney Rock and their ‘02 cabernet. Artesa in Carneros has amazing views. Oh, and being from the Mahoney family, it was imperative that we did a tasting at Mahoney Vineyards (which has now become Michael Mondavi’s Folio Studio. Boo!).

I need to go back soon. So many wineries, so little time…

Thank you so much for this informative post! I am planning my bachelorette weekend getaway to Napa and SF (from Chicago) in Sept and will definitely use these recommendations!

I had one question - I am using the trip to shop for wine for the wedding. I plan on bringing our menu and hopefully finding good wine pairings at a reasonable cost.

Most of our guests are beer drinkers but there are going to be some guests who will appreciate a good wine pairing or two!

Any suggestions for Napa wineries I can visit to shop specifically for wines budgeted at around $20 per bottle?

We are staying for two nights in the city of Napa and I would love any suggestions on which wineries we can hit to get the best bang for our buck!
