Keeping the Absent Present

March 19th, 2009 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Two of the most important people in Mr. HC’s life, his father’s father (Zadie) and his mother’s mother (Bubbe F) passed away before they could see their grandson get married. Although they can’t be there in person, they are very much a part of our lives in that they have both played such a significant role in shaping Mr. HC’s values and outlook.

To honor them, I am surprising Mr. HC with a small locket that our florist is going to attach to his boutonniere. It means a lot to me for Mr. HC to walk down the aisle with his grandparents figuratively and literally close to his heart.

I ordered a 1/2 in. by 1/2 in. locket from Picturesongold. It’s Lilliputian — smaller than a dime. The company can either laser etch your photos right into the locket, or print out and attach the photos for you. I chose the latter option, since I wasn’t convinced that the laser etching wasn’t going to come out all wonky.

The pictures I had on hand were scanned in at a fairly low pixel count, so the print quality wasn’t great. But the locket is so small that image quality isn’t that important. Also, I figure it’s more about the sentiment behind the locket than the locket itself.

In addition to the locket, we’re going to be honoring Bubbe by using a tablecloth she embroidered as part of the roof of our chuppah. A stroke left her unable to finish the design, but the embroidery she did finish is gorgeous. The tablecloth is going to be a beautiful testament of her love for her children (it was intended to be a gift for Mr. HC’s mother), as well as of her considerable talent as an artist. The embroidery also reminds me of a whole tradition of women’s work and women’s narratives; embroidery and other textile arts are a mode of storytelling and expression that connects generations of women. That it’s unfinished is even more meaningful, as it alludes to the stories that have yet to be told.

How will you be honoring loved ones who are not able to celebrate with you in person on your wedding day?

Oh Miss Hot Cocoa this is beautiful!
I haven’t figured out how to honor his grandparents who raised him and my grandparents who are no longer with us. I love this idea and I think it is going to mean so much to him!
You are very loving and thoughtful to do this for him!
Mr HC is one lucky man!

Wowwww. This is really poignant, HC. The textile is, indeed, an incredible narrative–the story of your lives and history–especially unfinished.

We are having an additional candle to in memory of our loved ones that have passed away. We are also adding a little except at the end of our program letting our guest know what the candle is for and that we miss and love them : )

My best friend, our dog, and grandparents will all be missed but I think having a candle in honor of them and bringing the candle inside to the reception will be nice : )

Wow - I love this idea Miss Hot Cocoa! I hope you don’t mind if I “steal” it! I’ve been trying to figure out a way to honor my FI’s best friend who passed last year and *this* is perfect.

My grandma passed away in July, which was an extremely hard pill to swallow. I can’t believe she won’t be there to see me walk down the aisle. I am going to have a bouquet of silk red roses (her fav) on the chair she would have sat in at the ceremony. They will then be placed next to the picture of her and my grandpa on their wedding day in the same place we will be married in. After the reception I’m going to stop by the cemetery and place them at her grave. My sister and I will also carry a mini red rose in our bouquets for her, and I’m also thinking about making the bouquet charms that Miss Crabcake talked about

OH MY GOODNESS! That is soooo sweet Miss HC. I love it! I’m sure his reaction will be priceless.
We’re doing memorial candles for our loved ones that have passed. Ours will be different than most because instead of just having their names on the candle I’m putting a picture on each one. I found some awesome ornament frames at Target at Christmas time that I’ll be attaching with black ribbon (one of our colors) to the candles.

That locket looks gorgeous. I think it’s a great sentiment.

I’m trying to figure out what I can do to remember my grandmother; she passed right after FI and I met, so she never met him but did hear me talk about him. I’m trying to be sensitive, too, though, to my cousins who have recently lost their father (my uncle) in any remembrances.

My something “old” and “borrowed” is from my grandma. We were really, really close but she passed away 15 years ago.

Awesome post, Miss HC–thoughtful and poignant. I am attaching a lady bug charm to my bouquet in honour of my grandma who is the only grandparent who has passed, but who really held our family together, and the absence of whom will be felt by many that day. My grandpa’s pet name for my grandma was ladybug, and she always had lots of little ladybug trickets around her house.

Where did you find the locket? I’ve been searching everywhere for something that small.

I love how much thought you put into every element of your wedding. Mr. HC is one lucky guy. And I really like that you wrote about women’s narratives and textile arts. My great-grandma quilted several blankets that are very important to our family.

I am so touched to read about all these very different and unique ways of honoring loved ones!

@SanDiegoAli: Please steal away! Nothing makes me happier!

@West Coast Bride: That’s beautiful.

@Lola: I got mine from Picturesongold.com (link above), but you can google 1/2 in. by 1/2 in. locket — there are quite a few options.

This is so sweet. It really upsets me that my grandmother won’t be in Jamaica for our wedding. I would love to do something creative to honor her & this would be great…she means the world to me. You are such a sweet wife-to-be! Lucky, Mr. HC :)
