Mrs. Gloss, Boston/Maine Age and Occupation: 24, Designer/soon-to-be Architect Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Engineer Engagement Date: May 23, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: SS Katahdin/Lakeside Tent About Me: I don't like nickels or the skin that forms on pudding when it's in the fridge for too long. I couldn't live without Pantone markers, fountain soda (3/4 diet, ¼ regular Coke), run-on sentences, or ridiculously oversized sunglasses. I will try to DIY almost anything and am just OCD enough to make most of it work. I am truly excited about having all my family and friends together, becoming Mrs. Gloss, and having amazing photos to prove it!
About Mrs. Gloss

We Found a Place!

March 19th, 2009 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Almost 5 months after Mr. Gloss popped that bling on my finger we FINALLY secured our venue… and have a date! We are getting married in Greenville, Maine in the middle of Moosehead Lake on the 100-year-old steamship Katahdin, affectionately nicknamed, ’the Kate’.

Our venue (if I can call it that) doesn’t typically do weddings, although they have done a few in the past. When I ‘toured’ the boat I spoke to the captain who was EXTREMELY helpful, since his daughter was married on the ship two summers ago. There were also a few surprises (good and bad).

The good news is that we can pretty much do whatever we want, including bringing all our own food and alcohol. The bad news is that even though the boat holds 250, if we want to have everyone in the same area for the ceremony, we will probably max out at 120. This seems like a good number, however, Mr. Gloss and I have really large families. Both Mama Gloss and Mr. Gloss (who shall now be referred to as Mr. G, since he thinks it sounds more ‘manly’) have seven siblings each. Yikes… so our guest list is primarily family and a few close friends. Another wrench in my plans is that we have to schedule our departure time around the pre-scheduled tours. Also, I had anticipated being able to have everything—ceremony/dinner/dancing—on the boat, since the last time I was on it, I remember it being HUGE. But on my ‘tour’, I quickly realized that the spaces feel much smaller after age 7.

I was not deterred however, since I had seen all these great modern, nautical photos for inspiration and I was determined to make it work.

I love that they are nautical, but not lighthouse/beachy-nautical. They just have such a relaxing feel to them that I want to be present on our big day. The couple in these pictures got married at my ideal location (not that I’m not super excited about the boat, but this place is seriously beautiful). So, if you have a diesel budget and decide to tie the knot here, please send me pictures so I can relive my fantasy wedding through you!

And more inspiration! The top images are from toast and tables, and I think the pillows are from Pottery Barn.

Anyway, we won’t go all-out nautical/beach theme with lighthouses and starfish since we won’t be on the ocean, and I think that that amount of nautical sometimes rides a fine line between classy and cheesy. I’m planning on using rope and maybe some compass rose elements as my nautical tribute, with navy, white, and yellow for colors.

Are you getting married in or around the water? How are you tying that in to your wedding theme?

Your inspiration photos are all so fun looking! I’m curious to hear how you’re going to manage a large guest list and ceremony/dinner/dancing on or in the vicinity of the steamship!

I used practically all of the same inspiration photos for my wedding!! I even had rope bout’s. I used navy and white, with pops of green as I was going for a subtle nautical theme. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

We’re getting married next to a lake and tying it into our theme by using ocean blue and white as our colors and our boat is our get-away vehicle!

I love that bout!! And how ironic that it is posted on The Knot!! HAHA!

I love you nautical theme!! That was one of my favorite things about Maine, it was nautical minus the beachy/starfish thing!

You’re smart to go “light” on the nautical theme. I looove your inspiration photos, and I think their subtlety will work really well with the fact that the venue itself already communicates a theme pretty strongly! In answer to your question, we’re getting married on a quiet ocean inlet, surrounded by big pacific northwest trees. When your surroundings make a statement, I think it’s a good idea not to drown them out with too much design, so we’re doing a scant few paper lanterns, glass candle hurricanes, some lovely flower pails (like your inspiration photos!) and that’s about it. We’re using pinks and purples to pop against the deep colours of the nature around us…why isn’t it my wedding day yet:-(

Also having a nautical-ish Maine wedding, except our colors are navy and apple green. I have the same inspiration photos for the centerpieces and have yet to find those cute little lanterns in silver (only found in black or white). Our wedding will be on Peaks Island in Casco Bay.

@ Bree72: We REALLY debated going with the green instead. Actually it was green for about 7 months!
@ MaineBrideinDC: We looked into Peaks Island @ one point – are you having it at the Inn on Peaks? It’s so beautiful there, believe it or not we ruled that out bc we didn’t want to have to transport people on a boat….and look at us now – my how times have changed!

I’m getting married on a yacht in Newport Beach, California [[gorgeous yacht may i add]] — I have a lot more restrictions then you do though it seems, but I’m really excited to get married on the water. The one thing my planner keeps telling me — you are on the water surrounded by so much beauty, you don’t need to over decorate because of all of the natural beauty.

We are getting married on a hill overlooking a lake, great scenery!
Love the nautical idea, esp. the red striped dresses!

What fun inspirations! I love the knot bout - too cute!

We’re getting married on a lake in a well-known cottage area and definitely plan to have some canoe shots in our wedding-wear! Nothing as grand as a steamboat, but still fun! ;)

I can already tell your wedding is just going to be amazing. I love the nautical theme and that picture with the red and white striped dresses from anthro has been one of my favorites for awhile.
