We Passed the Test!

March 19th, 2009 @ 12:41 pm by Mrs. Mascara

Good news! We met with the priest this weekend to go over our test results (one of the perks of getting married in a Catholic church… you have to take a test) and guess what? We passed. We are officially compatible. I’m glad I know that now after being together for almost 7 years.

Anyway, I wanted to post some pictures of the church we’ll be getting married at. It’s called Immaculate Conception Church, located on the north side of IM. It’s the church I have gone to my whole life. They just put new landscaping in around the church, so it should be great for pictures at our wedding! Actually it’s part of the reason Shari decided she wanted to photograph our wedding (thanks Shari!).

These pictures were taken a couple weeks ago, but since then they’ve finished adding the rock and grass in the gardens, and they are in the process of planting flowers. Won’t it be pretty for the wedding?

Did you have to take a compatibility test for your wedding? How did you do?

I love the fountain! Mr. Bruschetta and I passed our Pre-Cana “exam” with flying colors…except in the personality match category. Huh?! I know, bizarre!

What a great fountain for photos!
Mr. Gloss’ dad is marrying us (he’s a pastor) so I think he approves!

We loved the pre-cana exam - we still joke about the things that we answered differently. I think it’s a really useful tool!

We had to take that test too. We did fairly well, but did you know that it is actually impossible to fail? Haha.

We just had our FOCUSS test two weeks ago we get the results next Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how well we matched up, especially since we met via E-harmony which uses the 29 dimensions.

We just finished taking our test on Tuesday, so we’ll see how the results came out. I have a feeling I know what we will have to talk about. :)

Absolutely beautiful! :) My fiancee and I have decided to marry outside, much to the discontent of our Catholic Parents, so no exam for us!

Love the church! It is so unique– will make for some great black & white photos! We took a test as well– more of a personality test– it was neat to see what our letter combinations were and in which ways we are “compatible”

We are going to do our test tomorrow night. I am actually looking forward to hearing what my fh has to say!

I would not call it a test. We were initially very skeptical of our pre-cana classes, but in the end we found the process to be great for marriage preparation. I’m surprised you came away from your sessions with that attitude.

ooo. I hope when we choose our church we dont have one of these. What if we don’t pass it? I would be so upset and it would bother me forever. In asian tradition i think your suppose to seek out someone that tells you about your future. My fiance refuses to do it and its like what if they say its not gonna work out or we’ll have 10 babies or something crazy

I have always wondered…what does the church do if you fail the test? Do they refuse to marry you?

We have to take a compatibility test as well, that is yet to come. however we have already completed our 9 HOURS of NFP classes, and a weekend retreat which we graduated from with flying colors, so we are on our way! Congrats on passing the test…haha.

we took some sort of personality test…and it turns out we’re opposites. I think that means we’re compatible, right?

I’m with MightySapphire too, wondering what the church does if you fail the compatibility test?

@MightySapphire: @LatteLove: We were told not to take the scores TOO seriously. The grade is actually based on a combination of concensus between you and your fiance, and agreement of BOTH your answers with the “standard” or “accepted” answer.

We have to take the FOCUS test too. It isn’t a pass or fail type of test. Our priest told us that it evaulates your opinions and agreement on important topics. It test see how well you communicate, if you have communicated about those topics, and lets you know what topics you need to discuss. Like if you and your fiance have complete opposite opinion on saving, or how to raise children, the priest will address those topics with you in his counseling.

Just to clarify, I was sort of joking about “passing the test”. I don’t think it’s something you could ever fail, it just is a way for you to be aware of how your future spouse feels about situations that are not always discussed. So please don’t take me too literally!

@Michelle: We actually didn’t take our Pre-cana classes yet, we will be doing that next weekend. This was just the FOCCUS test, and I’m not sure what else to call it besides a test…since we had to use a scantron sheet and fill in the bubbles with an answer to each question. To me, that’s a test.

We took a test too! And it was fun! I still get all happy when our pastor mentions that he thinks we have such a healthy relationship. I just don’t like him calling it perfect - cause NOTHING is perfect!!! Anyway, I’m glad you’re clear to wed! :)

A scantron? Too funny!
Until college I always loved to fill out scantrons.

We didn’t have to take a test in our Pre-Cana. Was it because we were in the “Special Pre-Cana” for couples over 30 or living together?

I told FI we were on the Pre-Cana short bus :)

I was raised in the same church all my life, and always imagined myself being married by our priest if ever the time came. For myriad reasons that’s not how we’ve decided to do things, but I can totally relate to the personal meaning and sentimentality of being married in the church that “raised” you, spiritually. Plus, ya know, it’s a bonus that it’s architecturally delicious!

I’m sorry, but I just cringe when I see the FOCCUS inventory called a compatibility test. I guess you can only be asked if you “passed” and are able to get married so many times before it starts to get irritating (sorry, but true!). For those of you who had questions about the inventory, it stands for “Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding & Study” which is a pretty good description. It’s simply a tool to help you and your fiance identify areas of strength and weakness in your current relationship and target areas that you might want to discuss prior to marriage. Although it’s used by many Catholic Churches, it’s not actually associated with any particular church and they have different versions to suit various cultures (e.g., a “general” non-religious version, Christian version). The creators of the inventory also note that it’s not predictive of success or failure of a relationship. I know it’s a bit of a mystery to those who haven’t taken it, so I hope that helps! (I’ll get off my little soapbox now) :)

What sort of questions are on the test? I’m so curious.

I know, are you vowed to secrecy on what’s on the test?

i’m also getting married at immaculate conception, but in another state! i’m still waiting for our results and discuss them with our priest. glad to hear you and your fiance are compatible :)

@LPC, the survey is vowed to secrecy from your spouse IF you had to take it at different times than your fiance, so he can answer it honestly without influence. that’s what happened with my fiance and i. otherwise, if you both took it at the same time, then you don’t have to keep the questions secret. at least that was what i was told.

@miss cowboy boot, questions in the survey include identifying your thoughts on issues that can affect your marriage, such as finance, child-bearing, self-esteem, secrecy, and abuse, as well as asking whether or not you had a discussion on those topics. an example question include, “did you both decide how you will handle the finances?”

@LPC and Miss CB: nope, no “vow of secrecy,” but it’s honestly so mundane that I’ve forgotten most of it! It’s sort of a true/false format and like browneyes said includes a lot of questions that are about typical marital issues (e.g., I have concerns about my future spouse’s spending habits) and those aimed at whether you’ve talked about something or not (e.g. we have discussed whether we would like to have children). There were definitely some questions that I remember thinking “he’d better not say yes to that” (e.g., I question whether this is the right person for me to marry), but mostly it wasn’t too exciting. Was a good conversation starter for a few things though.
