About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

The Engagement Ring and Its Past

March 20th, 2009 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Mr. Cowboy Boot and his family haven’t always been on the best of terms (no one’s fault, in particular). Tumultuous teenage years can often send children and their parents in unwieldy directions. I know mine did. But, I also happen to come from a family that is overly-communicative (read: two psychologist parents), therefore most of our problems (read: my teenage angst) were solved by the time I left for college. Mr. CB and his family, however, had a harder go of it.

That is, until recently.

FIL Cowboy Boots’ dog, Lily

When we lived in New York City, we went up to his parents’ house to get away from the grime and grit that Manhattan can be. They live in the rolling countryside of the Finger Lakes region. It’s amazing, quite frankly.

The more and more we visited, the more I could feel the walls break down and warmer feelings come through. It wasn’t so much that either party had shifted their views, or that deep, problem-fixing conversations were taking place, but that, with a fourth party in the relationship (me), the dynamic was changing. It was no longer only a relationship between them and their son. They were getting to know me and us, as the Cowboy Boots together, and that took vulnerability on all of our parts. But, with time, it’s opened up the door a little for emotion, risks, talking about things, and becoming closer.

The FIL Cowboy Boots’ Home

The peace-making moment was this: FMIL Cowboy Boot gave her son (Mr. CB) her mother’s engagement ring to give to me. Mr. CB’s parents are divorced, and the FMIL Cowboy Boot I mention here is his step-mom. A lot of families pass jewelry down the line, creating heirlooms, which I love. For FMIL CB, this was more difficult than for most. Her mom passed away when she was six. This platinum-and-diamond ring has much more value to her than probably most of the jewelry in her jewelry box, and not because of the metal.

The Engagement Ring

The ring arrived one day via FedEx (Mr. CB didn’t have it when he proposed) and I waited until we were together that evening to open it up. The ring that arrived wasn’t exactly what I was expecting with curly-cues and thin, fragile details–it was art deco, yet simple and elegant, and was originally from Brooklyn (our old stomping grounds). I slipped it on (okay, after three re-sizings) and, even though it wasn’t the e-ring I had in mind, it has major symbolism, and aesthetically, I love its classic simplicity.

(Ignore my silly face)

Along with the ring came a very caring card from FMIL Cowboy Boot. To give us something so near and dear to her was a symbol of how much she cares about their relationship (which is now all of our relationship). It makes me proud to wear an heirloom that would have many stories to tell if it could talk–stories of hard times, good times, lonely times and loving times. It’s a daily reminder that life is not easy, but it’s a whole lot easier with a few words and a little generosity.

Does anything in your wedding have back story?

This is a very touching story, CB! I’d always wanted an heirloom ring instead of a tiffany’s - you’re a very lucky gal ;)

I agree with the previous commenter–that’s such a sweet story! And I have to ask, since I’m from Ithaca, where do your fiance’s parents live? (If you don’t mind answering, that is!)

I love you ring and its story. I also have an antique ring, but it’s not an heirloom (it’s an estate piece that was purchased from the estate of a jeweler. So it was unfinished and unworn for 75 years before we chose it and it was finished just for me).

That is such a great story, and I love the story of your fiancee’s reconciliation. Sometimes healing doesn’t take big soul-baring talks, it just takes a change in dynamic and a melting of hearts…

Wow, that ring is SPECIAL!! I’m always jealous of those who received heirlooms…I have none in my family (thanks to a craft burglar who hit us up in ‘90). I love that ring, it really compliments you!!

Congratulations!
You are so lucky to be joining such a loving family. Do you realize that his step-mom gave you the ring? That is not even his biological mom! She passed a heirloom through water and not blood! You should be so happy to be so loved and I hope you have thanked her enough! What a lovely story.

A ring with history. How wonderful! I will be wearing gold bangles that my mom had a jeweler made from her wedding jewelry given by her mother, my maternal grandmother. My mom doesn’t have much jewelry, but she held on to those so that she can pass it on to me and my sister. It will also be something old, something new and something borrowed.

So sweet! I love heirlooms, especially when they have that much meaning. My mom has a baby bonnet she got when I was born that turns into a hankerchief for me to wear on my wedding day. I’m going to wrap my flowers in it.

Actually, the center stone in my engagement ring is going to be the center stone from my fiance’s great-grandmother’s engagement ring. Yikes! The setting is currently about to be cast, so I can’t wait to see the final product. Your ring is so beautiful, though!

I also have an heirloom e-ring, from FMIL’s grandmother. FMIL’s mother also died when she was six - horrible coincidence - and she doesn’t have much jewellery, so it meant a big deal that she gave the family ring to me. It’s really meaningful and special. Like you, the ring wasn’t what I’d expected, but I totally treasure it.

By the way, you’re beautiful!

That is an awesome story! My grandparents gave us a bar of platinum they had as an engagement gift to have our wedding bands made. So it wasn’t quite a ring yet - but, it will be eventually!

@e: They live in a tiny “village” (too small to be a town) called Oxford, about 40 minutes from Ithaca, I think.

@emel: I haven’t been to Venice for a few years and when I was there, I was a poor college student, so I stayed in a hostel of sorts. It was around the corner from the train station and nothing special. The one piece of advice I do have for you, though, is to avoid staying off the “Venezia-Mestre” train stop which will seem attractive because it has cheaper hotels. That’s because its on the mainland (before the real Venice stop, “St. Lucia”). It’s very industrial and not the Venice you’re probably looking for.

I absolutely love it! I’m in the same boat. When I think about his mother giving my FI her mother’s ring that she wore for 70 years I tear up every time. His grandmother was married to the love of her life and they lived together for 70 years and passed away only 4 months apart. FMIL says its like they couldn’t be apart from each other.

This is such a beautiful story and you have such a beautiful ring to show for it. You are also very fortunate that the ring is set in platinum – it will surely last a lifetime. When I got engaged, I also received a family heirloom, but unfortunately it wasn’t a platinum ring and it wore over time so I had to have it reset. It’s still a beautiful ring and of course holds a lot of significance, I just wish I could say it was the original.
