Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

It seemed easier and like a more affordable choice when we started. It really did. A coworker’s wife offered to help me design and print our invitations. I loved the idea of sitting around with all of my girlfriends, drinking wine, and gluing envelope liners, tying ribbons, affixing vintage stamps, and, finally, seeing a box of tidy, beautiful DIY invitations ready to be carried off to the post office.

But after all of the exchanged emails and lunch meetings I had with my (very pregnant) friend who happens to be a graphic designer, I realized that A) No matter how many times she said she could work on them after the baby was born, I just didn’t want to be responsible for putting that pressure on her during that amazing time in her life, B) My friend and I were having trouble nailing down a design and focusing on the project on lunch dates because we are two Chatty Cathys and, C) Making our own invitations wasn’t proving to be cost effective.

During our design process, my friend suggested I look into Papeterie’s DIY invitations—you choose the shape, colors, graphics, and style from a myriad of options for an affordable rate (invitations from $187.50). They print them and you put them together. It seemed like a good option, but I really wanted something custom.

Papeterie’s “DIY” Invitations (not as DIY as some talented bees I know)

My fiance drew a gorgeous picture of a horse that I wanted to incorporate into our design somehow. The horse matched our ranch-y wedding, especially since we’d bonded with a colt named Doc who lives at Devil’s Thumb Ranch during our last visit. Papeterie mentioned they could use our drawing, but I was hungry to find out what else was out there.

I started calling in paper options. I wanted something textured and pulpy. Sustainable would be nice (either recycled or made from cotton pulp) and handmade would be even better. I ordered in a piece of Stardream Metallic paper from JAM Paper. It was too shiny and too thin for save-the-date postcards, and cost me $3.25 just for a sample. Papel Vivo’s handmade paper seemed perfect, but we were worried it would be too thick to go through the printer. Crane’s Lettra collection hit the mark pretty well and they were generous enough to send me every color in every paper weight for free. That’s 17 pieces of paper!

The Stationery That Almost Was : wedding stationery Overall So handmade! Sigh.

That’s when I stumbled upon Sarah Parrott on Etsy.com. I found her by typing “Gocco” into the search engine on the site. Her prices beat my DIY invitation’s pricing, she was extremely communicative, and thus, she was hired. Stay tuned to see what she dreamed up for our save-the-dates.

Did you have any projects started out as DIY and ended up being done by someone else?

I’m trying not to feel stressed that you’ve already figured out who’s making your invitations…but I don’t think it’s working! :-(

Mr. Cowboy Boots is an amazing artist! I’m always so envious of people who have that talent!

I did the exact same thing with our Save the Dates. After a few modest tries I threw in the towel. We also hired an Etsy seller, Kiss and Tell Cards, and her design was amazing!
I really wanted to do our invites myself, but realized they would be better and probably cheaper if I let someone experienced do them.

Our invites. I was going to do them myself but I just couldn’t get it right. Luckily I found a great screen-printer!

We were going to do our own invites too but time and money got tight- so we went with Wedding Paper Divas. Mr CB’s drawing of the horse is so good!

I’m DIYing my invites, but I’m very nervous…I have no idea what I’m doing really and I’m having a hard time finding a design I like…I should have waited before I bought the paper!

Every even slightly DIY projects I had someone else do - that is why I looooove Etsy! Things can be DIYed, but I don’t have to do them.

Snippet and Ink did an inspiration board recently that immediately made me think of you and your wedding - rustic, simple, beautiful. Here’s the link: http://snippetandink.blogspot.com/2009/03/board-360-east-of-eden.html.

I’m still planning to DIY our invites if I can, but I have some etsy sellers and affordable online favorites waiting in the wings just in case that falls through!
