Flower Misfits

March 22nd, 2009 @ 12:45 pm by Mrs. Gloss

When I asked my bridesmaids to be, well, bridesmaids, I said the only thing I truly cared about was:

  1. That they show up
  2. That they would be kind enough to remove any errant baby’s breath or carnations from ANYWHERE that I could possibly see.

Flower Misfits : wedding flowers Bbreath

Well, hours of perusing wedding blogs has altered my opinions. There are many carnation bouquets tightly wrapped together that look so stunning, like this one. (I’m still not really sold on carnations as singular entities, but in bulk they do wonders.)

And this wedding totally changed my mind about baby’s breath. Although I don’t think it’s right for our wedding, it is incredibly soft, romantic, whimsical, and a great resource for budget brides like myself.

I won’t suggest going quite this far though. bad Martha, bad.

After doing some research, have you changed your mind about flowers that you previously disliked?

yes. I totally love the look of the tightly packed carnations… and I wasn’t a carnation person before.

I had also never thought to go the baby’s breath route, and I agree that it can look very ellegant and stunning.

I have *never* been a fan of carnations, having experienced them mainly in single buds for charity fundraising events… but having seen some inspiring wedding photos of them in larger bunches my girls will now be carrying bouqutes or white carns! And oh wow are they budget friendly!

I am all about the baby’s breath– LOVE the price! We’re actually thinking of using quite a bit of it for our wedding.

Oooo nice! I think when there are a lot of other decorations in the room (like in the picture the tables are dresses really nicely and the chairs add a bit of punch to the room) you can get away with less extravagent floral centerpieces. It really depends on what the focal point is…sometimes it’s the chairs…sometimes it’s the china…and sometimes it’s the floral centerpieces….so little tiny flowers CAN really look nice!!!

Totally! I hated roses, but there are so many varieties other than the traditional supermarket kind you see everywhere. Now our wedding is going to feature them!

I’m not really an orchid person, and they don’t fit with my floral vision, but I’ve seen AMAZING things done with them as cascade bouquets and firework-like table arrangements!

seeing the tight bunches of carnations, like in mrs. lime’s centerpieces, turned me onto them too!

I’m not a huge fan of carnations so I’ve asked not to have them in my bouquet, but we will be using them on the pomanders for the ceremony/flower girl. I didn’t think I’d be using carnations at all, but after seeing pictures on wedding blogs with them in use - I totally changed my mind!

I love love love carnations! They are so underrated as a flower and they are simply gorgeous when packed tightly as floral balls, wreaths or in arrangements. I also love baby’s breath when used in large quanties as stand alone arrangements. I was going to use it in my wedding for ceremony decoration till my florist told me she absolutely detests the smell, said it was reminiscent of wet dog. My planner seconded the opinion which turned me off to it.

I also love carnations! And I agree that they are underrated as well. But I have to warn people that they only work, if you are going for a “modern” look. For the price, you can’t beat the shock value that they can provide!

I’m a baby’s breath convert! We’re planning to use them after I swore I wouldn’t.

I totally agree with you on the carnations! Individually they still make me want to gag but as a big ruffled bundle they look gorgeous!

I also love baby’s breath but it doesn’t work with my love scheme! I do wish I could have peonies at my wedding but they’re not in season! haha

I’ve also been seeing more and more carnation arrangements that I really like. It seems like anything can be made amazing and original if you use the right creativity.

Wow. I’m so with you on this post. Before getting too much into weddings I was anti-all-things-carnation-or-baby’s-breath-related. Seriously, the thought made me nauseous. But since then my opinions have been entirely changed. Like the photo you posted, baby’s breath (in my opinion) works best clumped together by itself (not as an addition to other flowers). Actually, I would say the same thing about carnations. And, actually, carnations are nice too because they last much longer than most other flowers!

i used to be so against roses, i had just had enough of them! but since planning started, ive decided i like em alot packed into textured bouquets with lots of flowers of different shapes and/or colors.
