Supporting the Girls

Not those. My cups definitely do not runneth over, so I’m referring instead to these girls.

And my tootsies are temperamental, at best.

I first started having issues in spring 2007, as Mr. Bruschetta and I were training for our first 5K. Three strikes — improper technique (yup, I was a toe runner), unfamiliar terrain (I had been on an inside track, and transitioned too quickly to an asphalt path) and a falling arch (my Achilles heel, if you will) — left me limping along with shin splints mere days before the run.

Stubborn and foolish, but determined to complete the 5K, I ran on my shin splints. In the coming weeks, I’d regret that decision, as I was forced away from cardio machines and into the pool for the lowest-impact workout possible — I’m buoyant, but so not a swimmer!

At this point, Mr. Bruschetta stepped in, with access to a myriad of physical therapy resources. With help, I began strengthening exercises, amazed at how weak (and lacking proper balance!) I was. We visited a foot-oriented specialty shop, and with the addition of over-the-counter orthotics, my tired soles fell no longer.

I’ve learned if I don’t keep up with stretches and exercises, the discomfort may come back. And, believe it or not, running is one of the best things I’ve been able to do for myself.

I spend the majority of my time in sneakers now, but can’t wait to start searching for cuter, wedding-appropriate shoes. One night of impractical footwear shouldn’t do too much harm, right?

What are some resources for comfortable wedding appropriate shoes?

I wore Naturalizers (style: Cosby)- with a low wedge heel. They were comfortable all night.

I tried on the Cole Haans last weekend and I swear to you, I heard angels! They have about 7 options and can be dyed. Only down side is they run $300 and up :( I ended up getting some by Nina, and I’ve had several pairs of dress shoes by this designer with great success….good luck!

i’m a bit worried about my feet on the day as well. I’m planning on getting those old navy wedge flip flops to wear during pictures (we’re doing a 2 hour photo session between ceremony and reception) and also I’m going to put dr.scholl’s gel pads in my shoes (they have ones that fit in heels (for ladies) =)

I loved my shoes, but they definitely started to bug me after a few hours…. luckily I had planned ahead and wore some cute teal flats (with a padded sole support insert) that made my tootsies feel much better for dancing :-)

If you are interested in flats, dessy has a line of satin ballet flats in every dress color.

If you go to Zappos, you can actually choose dress comfort shoes. I did that and found a gorgeous pair of heels, and they are soo comfortable. So I’d recommend checking it out!

I got these in red!

and they seem nice so far…. they’re not sneakers but the heel is just enough so that it’s not painful but still pretty. Good luck! I’ve had foot issues before and it’s not fun!

@LPC: I’ve heard good things about the Cole Haans too.

Whatever you do, get your shoes plenty in advance so you can work through and stretch them out with small bits of time around the house — you will definitely be thanking yourself the night of. ;-)

Cole Haan is definitely the way to go. if you get on their mailing list, they send out 30% off coupons all the time. Plus, you can order from their outlet online.

@A: Thanks for the tip! I think a coupon is the only way the Cole Haan designs could fit in my budget. :-)

I find that Cole Haan’s outlet prices are even better in store than online and the Off 5th outlet carries them as well, via an outlet they are still in the $80-160 range but, in my opinion, more feasible but I don’t know about dyables.

I should also mention that they have high heel inserts you can buy to add support and comfort! Check out Foot Petals, they really work!
