Pretty Calligraphy

March 23rd, 2009 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. Mascara

There’s something about a hand-addressed envelope in a pretty font that makes me swoon. While definitely not necessary, calligraphy can add a little extra elegance to an invitation suite or an escort card. I’ve been drawn to calligraphy ever since I was little. My aunt even bought me a calligraphy book for my birthday one year when I was about 10, and I practiced until I ran out of ink! Lately I’ve been drawn to less traditional forms of calligraphy. I love how these invitations found on Brooklyn Bride are addressed. They look casual and slightly messy, like the person who addressed them wasn’t even trying to make it look pretty. And I love the look of using all lowercase letters.

Jessica of tying the knot recently opened up her own calligraphy shop called Penned & Pretty. Her writing styles are also more contemporary than traditional calligraphy.

The last style, called “Pretty Adorable” lives up to its name, and it’s definitely my favorite! Congrats, Jessica, on opening your shop!

Who is your favorite calligrapher?

Oooh pretty! I was actually going to just print my envelopes but then my Dad offered to do them so my Dad is my favorite calligrapher! He even wrote a little chinese poem in each invitation.

Ted Clausen (www.tedclausencalligraphy.com) is seriously the most amazing calligrapher I have ever come across in my life. He lives in the Boston area, but is in high demand across the North East, so the NY brides may have heard of him.

I love the slightly whimsical fonts so my favorites would be Jenna Hein and Tara Jones.

Wow I haven’t looked into all these calligraphers - I probably shouldn’t since we’ll be doing our own and I’ll be so jealous!

Am I the only one that thinks these really busy calligraphy styles just look like scribble?!! I don’t mean to be mean - I’m sure they take a lot of work, but they’re just too messy for my taste.

I’d love to hire a calligrapher, but it’s out of budget so I’m trying to figure out how to design my own style.

I love laura hooper (obv.), but I recently bought a customized calligraphy stamp from Eimile Friday on etsy (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5046022). I really love her fonts!

I am a huge Laura Hooper fan, but we are doing our own calligraphy, since it is not in the budget. I am considering taking a class!

Miss Duckling - if a calligrapher is out of budget you could try downloading a pretty handwriting font from Fonts for Peas http://kevinandamanda.com/fonts/fontsforpeas/
or use Monotype Corsiva and trace over it like someone else did. Sorry - can’t remember whose great idea that was originally.

I love Laura Hooper’s calligraphy, but as I can’t afford it I’m going to do that semi-DIY trick where you print the address onto the envelope using a color that’s just darker than the envelope, and then tracing it with a thicker marker. Or I might just do that first example, since my handwriting looks a lot like that!

My favorite is Dallas local Nicole Black, the left handed calligrapher: http://www.thelefthandedcalligrapher.com . If you look at her blog, I used the “talia” font and we have been getting compliments for months!
