Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

A dining room worker apparently shot and killed two of his supervisors at our reception venue’s main kitchen last night before fleeing the scene. Ironically, guests in the dining room did not hear the gunshots as the band was playing (they have an old timey band that plays at dinner time).

HOT SPRINGS, Va. — Authorities in Virginia were searching Sunday for a resort employee suspected of shooting and killing two of his supervisors in the hotel kitchen while guests ate dinner in a nearby dining room.

Two kitchen workers were shot and killed around 8 p.m. Saturday at The Homestead luxury resort in the Allegheny Mountains near the West Virginia state line, Bath County Sheriff Larry Norfleet said. No one else was injured, and hotel spokeswoman Carol Stratford said no guests were present at the scene of the shooting.

Looks like resorts aren’t immune to disgruntled employees…

Would you be worried if this happened at your venue?

Geez so scary! I’ve been hearing about so many sad stories like that lately, like near my area (in Oakland) a man shot and killed 5 police officers, 3 are dead, one’s not doing well, and thankfully the last one is okay. So sad for the families who have lost their loved ones!

That’s awful. Please don’t let something like this take away from your day! This is an isolated incident.

wow, that is horrible! I can’t even imagine how you are feeling right now! While I would be somewhat worried, I would also think to myself, “how often does something like that happen at the same place?” I think the chances of this happening again at the same location is not very likely.

Do they have any insight as to where the suspects are?

I’m obviously very shocked to read this news, but it sounds like a freak event. If it was my venue, I would still hold my wedding there– if only because the employees that still work there are counting on my business to bring in income.

Oh no! It sounds like an isolated incident, but still, that’s very disturbing. I hope they find the suspect asap.

Oh how scary! Yes I’d be concerned it happened at my venue, more for the stigma the venue might now have for myself and my guests. My advice would be not to talk about it too much to guests/wedding party ahead of time - you don’t want it to be a topic of conversation at your beautiful wedding!

I have found that lightning rarely strikes twice…meaning where there have been tragic incidents in my life, nothing eventful ever happened there since. Since your wedding is far enough away I think you should still have it there. If it was next week however I think it would be in poor taste.

Thanks, all. Some good advice here. I’m not sure if I’m so much worried as I am saddened/disturbed by this. As if the economic situation weren’t eye-opening enough, this is just another reminder that life isn’t so rosey and happy. I guess we’re all just very lucky to be planning and looking forward to a happy event in our respective lives. Sorry if it was a downer, but had to share.

Something like that happened at a ski resort here in Colorado a few months ago.
I don’t think it would worry me - kinda like lightning not striking the same place twice.
