About Mrs. Gloss

Yellow Bellied or Green Eyed

March 23rd, 2009 @ 12:23 pm by Mrs. Gloss

I debated for a long time over… you guessed it… C O L O R S .

Let me set the tone - a boat, navy blazers, bright white tablecloths/navy runners/white vases, and (insert mystery color here) flowers.

I went back and forth for about 8 months on the following question:

Kate Spade yellow OR Kate Spade green?

I truly could not decide. There are benefits to each color:

YELLOW

  • It’s more traditional in the ’nautical’ theme
  • There are numerous flower choices
  • It pops great with navy

Potential downsides to yellow:

  • It’s an inappropriate text color (as it’s hard to read)
  • It’s probably pretty hard to look good in a yellow bridesmaid dress

GREEN

  • It’s more of a preppy nautical color
  • I love the idea of love the green shoe for a pop of color
  • It’s easier to find bridesmaid dresses in green
  • There is more tonal diversity within the color range
  • It’s an acceptable text color

Potential downside:

  • There are fewer flower choices

Remember that I purchased these bad boys for the centerpieces (4 per table) and they will each contain a stem or two. I like to call it “Budget Chic”.

These are some of the flower varieties I am considering:

all flower images from cutflower.com

I love how the yellow centers of the white flowers help to soften the more vibrant solid yellows.

Which accent color would you choose?

My vote is for green… as you pointed out, there are less “downsides.” But, alternatively, why couldn’t you do both? White and navy with accents of green and yellow? I think it would work. Or, you could do green with just touches of yellow.

Regardless, you should go with your instinct. If your gut prefers one over the other then you should go with that. That’s the only way to truly make yourself happy! They’ll both look beautiful, I’m sure! ;-)

I would choose yellow- while it’s not the best text color I think that it just goes so well with navy and it would look great on a nautical wedding! I think that if you find the right yellow dresses it will look great. I don’t think you need to use it as a text color- why not navy text with yellow as an accent color?

Yellow! I think yellow and navy are SO happy together, and I love yellow dresses (more people can pull them off than you think, if you pick the right shade.) You can also have navy text and go with yellow in the design more, if you’re concerned about readability.
I’m all about yellow.

Yellow! It’ll give you that added pop of color to go along with the navy! :D

Yellow! I don’t think the green will be enough of a contrast with the navy.

An alternative would be pink - lots of potential flowers there!

There’s loads of navy inspiration boards out there … maybe you can find one with yellow or green to help you decide.

Wow, are weddings are pretty similar! We debated for awhile to use yellow or green as accent colors, I love both, but I think we decided to stick with just navy and blue.

With the esxception of the groomsmen ties, which we are still not sure what to do about those, wince their blazers are navy.

Thats a tough choice, I like both.

The green and the yellow are both beautiful. You should check out The Knot’s gallery of green bridal bouquets. They might help you see the potential flower choices…

Here’s a link:
http://weddings.theknot.com/Real-Weddings/Bridal-Bouquets_green/results.aspx?type=3&wedding_details=Bridal+Bouquets&colors=green

They actually have more pictures of green bouquets than they do of yellow ones.

You could also consider using one as your main accent color and just working in the other color in subtly for a pop here and there.

I would choose green. You listed all the reasons I would have listed and so many green flowers come to my mind.

Have you also looked at the flower wiki (http://wiki.weddingbee.com/Flowers)? It lists a few flowers you might want to look at

Green:
* Bells of Ireland
* Cock’s Comb
* Hydrangea (year round)
* Hypericum Berry
* Kermit Pom
* Orchid (year round)
* Parrot Tulip
* Rose (year round)
* Viburnum

Yellow:
* Carnation (year round)
* Craspedia
* Daffodil (spring)
* Gerbera Daisy
* Marigold
* Ranunculus
* Rose (year round)
* Sunflower (spring, summer)
* Sweet Pea
* Tulip (year round)

I am also having a preppy New England wedding (on a lake). Our colors are navy and green with accents of yellow.
Either way, you can’t go wrong.
Have you considered navy BM dresses with either green or yellow accents (shoes, jewelry, etc?)

Yellow! I chose yellow dresses for my bridesmaids and they love it. You have to choose the right shade of yellow, but it could work. All of my ladies have a variety of skin tones as well, so I’m happy I found one that works for fair to dark skin.

I have seen a lot of yellow and blue lately. I think it will be so lovely.

AHa! This post made me smile so much because we have the exact same color schemes. We don’t have a boat, but the guys are wearing navy suits, the flowers will all be white, but I went back and forth between that exact yellow and that exact green. In the end…..I DECIDED BOTH! We are going to have 3-5 accent colors instead of two at our wedding. I’m color greedy! You have great taste! ;)

Tough call! I’m thinking yellow, but agree with JennyBryde — maybe you can use both, and lean a little more heavily on one versus the other?

I say yellow… there is just something so nice and fresh about a navy, white and yellow combo. I think there are so many different shades of yellow, you can pick a colour that goes well with the skin tones of your ladies for bridemaids dresses. Also, if you are worried about some of the darker yellow flowers, just do a mix of white and yellow.

Why don’t you use navy for the BM dresses? I think that using both the yellow and green would be pretty. If I had to choose…yellow

I vote for green. I love both colors, but more people look good in green (particularly that green) than yellow. I have fair skin, which I lovingly call “pink” and I look HORRID in yellow. So if you have any ‘pink’ BMs, that might help. But in terms of flower colors, were you thinking of green for the BMs too? Or the centerpieces? I think that maybe a soft yellow or cream flower for the BMs would be good w/o an overload of green and still keep with your theme. As for the CP’s, I think a bright yellow would really pop on the stark white linens with the navy! Good luck w your choices!

Ok- White isn’t one of your colors… Blue and Yellow with little green accents!!!

Food for thought– Bright cheery yellow will probably look good on everyone (especially with a tan) and Green can look just as ghastly on people.

And your text could be navy or Green… But I would stick with Navy!!

Navy, White and Kelly Green were my colors, so I am a little biased, but I really do love the yellow, too! I would say that finding accents in yellow is probably easier than in green, though, as it was rather hard to find the right green in a lot of items I needed. I am so excited to see more of your wedding…..it seems to be so similar to mine!

We’re doing navy blue and green and then pink as our accent. Maybe you could do Navy, Green and yellow as the accent?

I would go with navy and green with a bit of yellow and white as well. Very preppy and very cute. Also, IMO white flowers will not look good in the vases you’re using. I love them {have a couple right in front of me right now!}, but they aren’t a true white and I’ve always thought that white flowers look “off” in them. Maybe it’s just me though. I keep green flowers in them and I love them. They’re in my living room that opens into my dining room that is lime with white trim…looks great!

I think yellow compliments navy more than kelly green, but we’re using an apple green for our nautical-ish preppy wedding. Our bmaids dresses are from Jcrew in the Clover color and look good on all of them!

Actually, we’re doing navy blue with green and yellow accents–navy bridesmaid dresses with a “Kate Spade green” sash and yellow and white flowers for everyone–so I’m totally biased into saying both!

And I love green mums as a flower option. They’re so neat and sculptural, especially green spider mums. ^_^

I love them both!!! I’m a little biased though because I am using both green and yellow although not the Kate Spade shades.

However, in a choice of either of those, I would go with the green. Its so punchy… I think it really pops!

If your just doing one color, I would choose green. But also agree that you could do pops of both if you really can’t decide. Have them wear green dresses with yellow flowers…

Our weddings sound very similar - nautical-ish, preppy, navy blazers, all together very tailored and simple …. I choose Navy AND I choose green, but a more-limey shade. I looked at using a shade like the the kate spade green you show, but there honestly wasnt enough contrast. We’re looking at not trying to match the flowers and use a light corally pink as the accent. But i must say either yellow or green are fabulous choices to go with navy.

Oh, definitly green. When mixing blue and yellow you’ll run the risk of having everything end up looking like a flag. Swedish flag seen here: http://www.motstand.org/nrp/svenskaflaggan.jpg, Ukrainan flag seen here: http://www.beperfect.ru/naturebest/img/ChooseCompany/flag-ukraina.gif and the former flag of Kongo Kinshasa as seen here: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/flags/bf-lgflag.gif .

Go green!

Yellow and navy would looks stunning!

And just to point out about the downsides:
- Yellow is definitely hard to read against white. But yellow text against navy background would look great and definitely legible.
- The bridesmaid dresses… well i guess it’s pretty relative. I’ve envied a lot of yellow bridesmaid dresses! I think you’ll have plenty of options out there ;) I’ve seen a lot of yellow dresses lately.

I’m doing something similar to the “Kate Spade Green” as a pop agains my black and white. Love it! It’s so bright and fun. BUT…after going down this road, it does make you think creatively about floral options and what you can and cannot do to incorporate it. But with that said, it makes a great pop!

i also agree with some of the ladies and say use both, green and yellow, with green more of the dominant accent color than yellow.

also, you can test out the color combinations - navy/green, navy/yellow, navy/green/yellow - at this website, http://labs.ideeinc.com/ (and just click on flickr set or alamy set) and see what you like. i heard about this website from another weddingbee member!

I most definitely flip flopped over this choice also!

I love yellow, it’s so bright and cheerful and yellow roses is my favorite flower.

But for me, green (I call it luscious grape green) seem the natural choice because we are having a vineyard wedding.
I LOVE both colors so I’m really no help. But another reasoning is perhaps your wedding flowers? Which of those colors does it come in regularly so that you won’t be paying extra to dye them?
P.S. I think the yellow font color can easily be solved with using navy colored paper! I’m almost certain the yellow will pop out against a navy background. Try it on the computer!
Good Luck!

HAHAHA I laugh because I chose both! LOL I’m a green & yellow wedding person. But if I could do it all over again (and I love the nautical theme BTW) I would go with yellow to compliment the navy. It just stands out and it’s a fun cheery color! Plus the flower choices are endless, and how fun will that be for you?

I would go with the green. Firstly, because I squealed when I saw your “Kate Spade green” photo since I have that bag and it is my favorite and I got it through a friends & family sale (the only way I could ever afford it!). It is a gorgeous color and looks wonderful with navy. Additionally, you could use much more natural flowers in your vases, which I am a big fan of.

Either way, it will be beautiful, but the green definitely adds a modern pop!
