Grooming the Groom

March 24th, 2009 @ 11:43 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

This past weekend I realized that I have spent way too much of my time obsessing over my wedding attire. Ipso facto, I also realized that I have spent way too little time obsessing over Mr. Powder Puff’s wedding ensemble. Shame on me!

Well, no more! I hereby declare that I shall spend just as much time thinking, dreaming, planning and generally driving myself crazy over Mr. Powder Puff’s wedding threads as I do my own.

This is a relatively easy task to complete, since I’m not a fan of the classic tuxedo. Cummerbunds, no thank you. Bow ties, not for me. Ascots… don’t even get me started on ascots.

So naturally, in lieu of a tux, what other option do we have, but a fabulous suit. Something like this beauty:

Grooming the Groom : wedding menswear Br Otf

Oh, Banana Republic. You are my love, second only to the Crew. And mostly because my sister works for you, and totally hooks me up with sweet discounts.

But even the sweetest discount couldn’t justify the expense of a new suit. Well, that and the fact that the mister’s groomsmen would most likely stage a coup de gras if they were prevailed upon to drop a significant chunk of change for a wedding outfit.

So, back to square one with the tuxes. Which I really wasn’t all that happy about, until mine eyes saw the glory of this:

Grooming the Groom : wedding menswear 14 1

Hello gorgeous!

Now this is a tux ship I could totally jump aboard! No vests, no cummerbunds, and not an ascot in sight. Just a slim-fitting tux and a skinny tie. Totally hipster and awesome looking!

Now we just need to execute my vision, and I can cross one more thing off my mile-long wedding list. Hooray for progress!

What are your dashing gentlemen wearing on the wedding day? If you chose suits, how did you make them more affordable for your wedding party?

We told the guys they could wear either black or grey suits. We’d pick up the ties so they’d match.

I like your style Miss Powder Puff! Mr. K and his groomsmen are wearing the first suit from BR! We got 30% off and then paid for a bit of each of their suits for their groomsmen gift! I love the black one too!

Great style Miss Powder Puff! :)
My fiancee and his groomsmen are wearing light grey suits that we got a REALLY great discount on from Express. I normally am not crazy about their stuff, but they have great fitting, modern suits and are often running sales! We debated between here and BR.
I do love that black tux, but was afraid we wouldn’t be able to find something as snazzy to rent.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up about not thinking too much about the men’s suits … isn’t that the groom’s job?

I do like the look of simple suits, but my fiance chose the classic morning suit (we’re English). His clothes - his decision!

I love that first suit. We want to do grey suits. Can we rent them from Men’s Warehouse?

I myself am also not a tux fan, neither is FH because he has to wear one for work. We are also going with a gray suit, but I quite like that black tux/suit. Snazzy.

I love that first one! We both want our wedding to be totally relaxed and not stuffy… We’re thinking khaki suits maybe with nice flip flops. I want my bridesmaids and I to be barefoot… Save on the shoes too!

Can’t you rent suits also? I am also not a fan of tuxes.

Have you thought of Joseph A Banks. They have huge suit sales. My Fiance bought a 900 dollars suit for 280. And we just bought our other guy’s suits for 150 each on sale. They are pretty nice too and were regularly 300. My one GM told us thank you because he just spent 180 to rent a tux for a wedding this weekend. So you could easily do an awesome suit that everyone gets to keep. :)

We TRIED to do suits. Because we wanted khaki, we weren’t able to find many options under $250, which was more than J wanted the groomsmen to pay anyway. Express does have great deals periodically on gray suits, though.

What we decided on eventually was to go with khaki tuxes from Jim’s Formalwear, which is a national chain. Even our small town in the middle of nowhere had a company that rented them! They have a great mix and match option, too… so my brothers will wear navy blazers with khaki pants– rented!

I am glad to see this post! I am trying to get the Mr to think about what he’ll be wearing. As there are no groomsmen to worry about, I’m trying to get him to purchase a new suit, maybe something on sale from Jos A Banks or the like…

Swooon! FH is wearing a suit similar to that last one and every time I see that picture I think Mmmmm FH is going to look yummy :)
We also decided not to do tuxes… FH is going to buy this suit from J Crew and his dudes are going to rent gray suits from Men’s Warehouse.

Oooh, love the inspiration. Do you have a place nearby that will actually rent slim tuxes like that? I found our local MW’s to be kind of traditional and unhelpful when it came to our crazy modern wedding ideas unfortunately…when we’d originally proposed the idea of the grey suits (which we have since nixed since the moms want the boys in tuxes), they looked at us kind of funny, haha.

Anyway, the guys in his party are lucky b/c his parents will be footing the bill for the tuxes. But we had originally discussed either FI getting a new suit and the guys wearing their own suits or FI’s parents covering up to the cost of a tux rental and the guys paying for the rest. But I didn’t feel like I was justified in making them pay for a whole new getup, however that’s just my situation, I’m sure other guys might feel differently about having a reason to get a cool new suit =).

Ali — FI is wearing that suit to our 2nd reception! We got an amazing deal since their Aldridge was being marked down + we had a 20% coupon. It’s fantastic and yeah, I think he’s pretty yummy in it =)!

Both of those options look a-MAZING. I worked for a tux store that has since become Men’s Warehouse, and the prices are pretty steep (considering you get to wear it one night…), especially for the nicer, lighter weight ones - which you’d want for a July wedding. I think I remember something around $165 (I’ve bought a suit for myself from BR on sale for cheaper). That included rental for everything, but since you seem to only want the basics, it seems like you may be paying for more than you want. Then you have to worry about returning it the day after, picking it up soon before the wedding, hoping the tux that comes in 2 days before the wedding isn’t screwed up or someone didn’t mention wrong, etc. Due to my experience working there, we decided to have the groomsmen wear their own black suits, and those who don’t have one are willing to buy one because most guys will need a black suit at one point in their lives. But I would still suggest Men’s Warehouse for rentals based on the convenience of locations and the aforementioned problems seem to be the case with any tux rental from anywhere. Oh, and I’m pretty sure Men’s Warehouse does rent suits too. Just some food for thought - hope it helps!

Oh LOVE that tux/suit!

The FI’s is wearing just a simple black suit that he will be buying, probably Hugo Boss, bc if I’m going to be spending $$$ on a wedding dress he deserves a uber nice suit too! Hah! Red tie to match my red sash.
The men we will only ask that they wear a black suit (rent or buy up to them but IMO every man should have a nice black suit in their closet) and we’ll be picking up green ties for them to match the green sash of the maids.
I don’t like skinny ties though, they only look nice on average height skinny men. The FI is tall and buff. =P So I will be searching Marshalls, TJ Maxx and the like for nice wide satin ties!

Miss Red Head

My man found his suit at a great consignment shop in Chicago - off Broadway, $200 out the door and he looks fabulous. We found it before I found a dress.
We knew we couldn’t afford suits for all the men and they are hard working country boys who don’t own suits, and wouldn’t wear them in the near future. This posed a problem when I tried “just have them wear a suite or buy a suit.” So we went with our colors, purchase a pair of brown slacks and a collared ivory shirt. Mr. Red Head will be in a suit and they will be casual and sleek. I am excited to how they fit in with the rest of the party as the girls are in different dress styles but the same chocolate brown tea length.

If you find a location that rents out tuxes like your second inspiration picture. Please share it here. My fiance is very traditional and wants to wear a tux but I hate the traditional tux and I would like him to wear something more hip. He is very slim so the modern look would look fantastic on him.
