Mission: Vintage Stamps

March 24th, 2009 @ 2:32 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

When I went on the US Post Office’s website to look at postage options for our save-the-date postcards, I was let down. All they had in terms of 27-cent postage was a sheet of tropical fruit stamps. While these look awesome on Miss Kitten’s island-wedding save-the-dates, we’re getting married at a ranch in Colorado with a subdued color scheme. Tangerine orange, banana yellow, hibiscus pink, and honeydew green stamps with star fruit and papaya on them don’t exactly match the mood we’re going for.

Originally, I wanted vintage stamps. But when I started doing research, they seemed to be quite a bit above and beyond the price of postage. I couldn’t justify spending $4.00 on 4 22-cent stamps when they should cost 88 cents.

First I checked Champion Stamp, a vintage stamp dealer who comes recommended by Martha Stewart all of the time. As you can guess, they had every stamp imaginable, and even had them sorted into a neat little PDF catalog, but they were out of our price range.

Our stationer, Sarah Parrott, recommended I head to the Sea Jay Stamp and Coin eBay store. Again, his prices were out of our budget, but Sarah also had a piece of advice for me: “Jot down the Scott catalog number and then type it into the search engine. You’ll find other sellers with the same stamps at different prices.”

It worked. I sifted through Sea Jay’s collection, noting the stamps I found most relevant to our invitations: American Horse Breeds, Daniel Boone, Colorado State, National Parks, Sheep, Wooden Ducks, American Folk Art, and the list goes on and on. Basically, I was looking for anything outdoorsy, mountainous, farm-like, or Western. Then I typed in their Scott numbers, and came up with sellers offering them for everything from below face value (thanks to bidding wars) to well overpriced.

I placed four orders: One sheet of 40 22-cent American Horse Breed stamps, one sheet of 40 6-cent Wolf Trap Farm National Parks Centennial stamps, 15 5-cent red Air Mail stamps, and a random assortment of 46 22-cent stamps.

This was more than we needed, but I found a great deal on the American Horse Breed stamps: face value, while other sellers had them for as much as $22. And we needed about ten more 22-cent stamps on top of the random assortment, anyway.

This morning, after Mr. Cowboy Boot penned the addresses (after much cajoling), we started affixing them.

Piece of advice #1: Stick the stamps on before you address them. Some of the stamps were too big and started to cover up the addresses.

Piece of advice #2: Find out how big the stamps are before you order them. The horse stamps we got (which were our fave) are way too big. They cover up the word “Postcard” a little bit. So, we’re going to use up the random assortment of 22-cent stamps and only use a few horse stamps, which is the opposite of what we had planned. And the random assortment is definitely, well, random: US Constitution stamps, Christmas stamps, Social Security Act stamps. You get the idea.

In the end, some of them look phenomenal, while others look, well, interesting. We’ll save most of our horses for our invitations.

Did you have to hunt for anything you really wanted for your wedding?

I ordered custom stamps for our wedding and they ended up being too large as well. :( Covered up our pretty calligraphy. We ended up picking out a decent stamp from the Post Office and hope to use our pretty stamps for our actual invites!

Loving the look of your save the dates and the vintage stamps!

This entry could not come at a better time for me! I just went to the Post Office this morning to get postcard stamps for our Save the Dates. I asked to see their selection and out came the one and only choice: those darn tropical fruits! I stammered, “Uhhh, that’s IT?” The clerk looked back at me like I was nuts. Sorry, but kiwis and starfruit don’t really scream Fall wedding. Disappointed, I bought 2 packs because I didn’t think I hand any other choice.

When I showed them to my fiance an hour later, he told me the guava looked um, well, like (can I say this?)…female genitalia. I thought he was just having a weird Freudian moment until I took another glance…and they kinda DID!!

After a good laugh, we decided those fruit stamps were best used up on utility bills and I’d have to explore other options. That’s when I came across your oh-so-appropriate post while doing my normal weddingbee surfing. So a big thank you. This bride-to-be will be going the vintage stamp route, for sure!

I lucked out. We’re getting married in the Carolina mountains, and the post office has a Great Smoky Mountains national park stamp.

But, we had to supplement it with the damn tropical fruits. …. We used the female genitalia stamps for our extra-special guests!

@ goodbuddy & bluegreenjean - my FI had the same response to the tropical stamps I brought home and while we put together enough vintage stamps for our STDs he did pick a few “special friends” to use the tropical fruits stamps on ;)

We actually lucked out and found our stamps on craigslist. We had some left over which we promptly sold to another bride friend (at cost). The markup on some of those ebay listings really shocked me!

I have some questions about using vintage stamps bought on ebay. Are they difficult to stick on? And does it really not matter what kind of stamp you use, or how old it is, as long as it adds up to the correct postage? Thanks!!!

@monalisa670: Thanks for your questions! Depending on how old the stamps are, they can be a little difficult to stick, but licking them and holding them down for a sec usually does the trick. As long as you buy US Postage Stamps, no matter how old, you can use them for postage. The only thing you have to do is make sure they are not “pre-canceled” or “canceled.” This means they’ve been used. You can usually tell when that’s been done because there is black ink on them from the post office. When you mail a letter, they put a black ink stamp over the postage stamps to “cancel” them. Let me know if you’re wondering anything else.

Awesome, thanks so much! I’ve looked into this before cuz it’s an idea I love, but I hesitated due to the additional costs and fear of the postage not sticking. Thanks for your tips! Your STD’s look awesome!

Horse breeds are perfect for your STDs! I am going to have to google the wooden ducks, just for fun.
We ended up using the tropical fruit because I didn’t have time to do anything about it when I learned that was all the PO had, but they went pretty ok with our colorful paper products.

For people in NYC: Champion stamp actually has tons of face value stamps…I was just there. The selection is maybe a bit lacing if you’re looking for full sheets, but they have binders and binders of blocks of 4 stamps, sold at face — many of the designs that are above face on ebay. of course, not that means that not all your invites will have the same combo of stamps, but to my mind that’s pretty fun! i just spent the best lunch break ever poring through their binders….

oh, and i should mention, i bought stamps at face value (in blocks of four) are listed in champion’s own catalog at more than face value…so this is really just if you can actually get to the store.
also, i’d say the selection of face value was strongest for mid twentieth century stamps…so if you’re going for the victorian look you might be out of luck
