About Mrs. Mascara

Bridesmaid Times Two

March 25th, 2009 @ 6:14 pm by Mrs. Mascara

This summer I have the pleasure of standing in not one, but two of my friends’ weddings (both of them are standing in my wedding as well). I must admit, it’s kind of fun to be planning our weddings at the same time. We are all in the same boat, and whenever everyone else is tired of hearing about the weddings, we have each other to talk to!

Dana’s wedding is in October, so I’ll have a month to recover after our wedding. We recently picked out our bridesmaids dresses. We had a great time trying to find the perfect one, stopping at a few Chicago establishments along the way, of course. We selected strapless satin dresses from the Vineyard Collection in Pewter. I think they will look beautiful, don’t you?

Dona’s wedding is in May, and I am the maid of honor. You know what that means… yep, the speech. I feel like the maid of honor’s speech never quite measures up to the best man’s, for some reason. I’m struggling with what I’m going to say. I want it to be short, sweet, and to the point, with a little bit of humor thrown in as well. This is easier said than done, and the wedding is only two months away! I need to figure out what I’m going to say soon so I can practice, practice, practice, because public speaking is not my forte. If anyone has any advice, I’m all ears!

What was the most memorable wedding speech you’ve ever heard? If you’ve given a speech of your own, where did you turn to for inspiration?

Hehe, I roasted my sister with childhood jokes when I was MOH at her wedding. :-) I LOVE the pictures her photographer captured — I’m totally basking in the spotlight, and Sister Bruschetta’s got a “where the heck did you get all this material?!” look on her face.

That Vineyard BM dress is gorgeous!

At my best friends wedding this past summer (of which I was the MOH) I had to do “the speech” as well, eeekkk! I kept is short and sweet, throwing in the typical congratulations and added a few suggestions on how to live with a gassy man… I went the funny AND sentimental route. It worked out well!

I was the MOH in my cousin’s wedding 2 years ago. Our mutual grandmother had passed away just 6 days prior- and I was able to meld my speech in with a piece of marital advice our grandmother had given us. It was an emotional speech to give - but I was really pleased that I mentioned her. Prior to the speech - my grandmother was like the elephant in the room- people were “afraid” to talk about her for fear of ruining my cousin’s day. Afterwards, people started telling jokes about my Gram, and comparing my cousin to Gram, etc. It was lovely.

This speech is probably the greatest ever, albeit hard to execute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy1uWAm4SnI
Yours will be great, just speak from the heart. :)

I was MOH last year at my friends wedding and was so nervous giving a speech. We were college dorm mates and that was also how I met her husband-to-be (he often spent the night at our dorm and let me tell you it was certainly cramped). Talking about how you first met the bride and how you met the groom and how you knew they were right for each other would be good to talk about. I also included some words of wisdom (found via the internet!). My favorite is “love doesn’t make the world go ’round, love is what makes the ride worth while.’

Good luck, you’ll be fine!

Love that dress! Make sure you practice in front of people who will give you honest feedback, try to memorize key parts or all if you can and make sure you breath and don’t talk too quickly :)

The most memorable part of all of the speeches was definitely when my dad spoke about my hubby’s dry sense of humor and unique way of proposing to me. Nick proposed to me using our furbaby cat Dante’. He attached the ring to the collar and actually made it like the cat was asking permission to marry him. So cute, hilarious and memorable. Anyway, it was a much anticipated wedding (since we dated for 8 years prior) and my dad’s one liner was that after struggling to get the ring off of the collar, I managed to say yes.. and that I would have come running down that isle with the cat still attached to my finger! It was hilarious, thoughtful, and so true! I loved it and will never forget it! You will be fine giving the speech. Just don’t choke up like my sister did and start talking about peas and carrots. She forgot what she wanted to say and that was all she could come up with. Although not the greatest speech, we still laugh to this day about how ridiculous she sounded. I guess that made it ok. :^) Good luck! You’ll be great!

Oh- ps.. a line that the BM used at the very end of his speech was something that really stuck in my mind. It was “may you live as long as you want, and love as long as you live.” It could be something that’s reused. Just a thought.

I was the MOH at my sister’s wedding. It is well known that she has pretty much taken care of me since we were kids. So I joked around about being jealous that she wouldn’t be able to make my lunch for me anymore and that I was being replace by here husband. I also recounted a few stories from when we were little. I thought it went pretty well and got several laughs which is good.

I agree with Miss PP, speak from the heart and you’ll be fine! I have given two wedding toasts (sister of the bride and MOH) and in both cases, I just tried to take some time a few days in advance to meditate on how much I care about them, and how I feel about them as in their relationships. I also ended my sister toast with a beautiful poem, so I knew once I got through my own words it was just a matter of reading someone else’s well. Also, I wrote both less than a week before the wedding, so you’re still ahead of the game!

I’m my sister’s MOH this summer, I hope you post about your speech, I am so nervous!!

I think the best ones are always personal, but not so personal that only the bride and the MOH get what they are talking about. Just be sincere.

GREAT dresses! No way you 3 could pick the same BM dress & recycle? Speak from you heart–short & sweet, & it will be perfect. A humorous (but appropriate) anecdote always helps!
