About Mrs. Stiletto

Daddy & Daughter

March 25th, 2009 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

I’ve searched endlessly for a song that works well for the father/daughter dance. Like everything else, I want it to make sense, fit our day, and not be incredibly cliche.

After scouring many message boards and doing a full-blown iTunes search for every song containing the word “daughter” in the title, I came across Loudon Wainwright’s song entitled, what else, “Daughter”.

Who is Loudon Wainwright, you ask? Well, I wasn’t familiar with him either, but I’m certainly familiar with this tune, and I’m sure it will ring a bell for you if you’ve ever seen the movie Knocked Up, as the closing credits of the movie are set to this song.

While the song is a little more country that I, Mr. S, and my dad might be, the lyrics are incredibly sweet. I especially like the following lines (I’m sure my dad will laugh when he hears them):

Everything she sees
she says she wants.
Everything she wants
I see she gets.

That’s my daughter in the water
everything she owns I bought her
Everything she owns.

I wouldn’t say I’m spoiled, but my dad has been incredibly generous with me, from paying for my college tuition, to sending me to study abroad for a semester in London. And I hope he knows that I’ve appreciated all of the opportunities he’s helped to make available to me!

So, the first question I have is if people would automatically associate this song with Knocked Up this September. The movie came out in theaters in 2007. Secondly, how hard will it be to get my hands on a high quality version of this song? That’s something I haven’t yet investigated.

We’ll see what happens, but I’m definitely pulled in by the sweetness of this song!

Have you picked a special song for your wedding that came from a movie, or is a highly recognizable tune? What is it?

I really like the song, “The Way I am” by Ingrid Michaelson as my fiance and I’s first dance-so I know that’s pretty popular now but it’s so sweet! Personally, I had NO idea that song was from Knocked Up, so go ahead and use it!

I just listed to the song and looked up the lyrics and they gave me chills! :) I think it’s a perfect father, daughter dance song.
Also I’ve seen Knocked Up at least 3 times and didn’t even realize that was the song until you mentioned it, I don’t think many, if any, will associate it with the movie.

I saw that movie several times, and I wouldn’t have associated that song with the movie at all. I think you should go for it!

You can buy the Loudon Wainwright album from Itunes. There is no Knocked Up soundtrack but daughter is the Loudon album. The other songs are pretty good as well.

yes! I’m using a lot of songs from movies in our wedding. they are just so full of emotions!

ie: Glasglow love theme from ‘love actually’ will be what i walk down the aisle to.

and i think i will totally steal your idea for the father daughter dance. let me know if you find a higher quality version. even if ppl do associate it with the movie… the words are so meaningful i don’t think they will fault you for it.

my question… i really like ‘latika’s theme’ from slumdog millionaire and thought of using it for the unity candle music. but im afraid it’s way to recognizable.

Haha, Mama and Daddy Bruschetta once went on a date (a loooong time ago) ;-) to see Loudon Wainwright perform.

“Daughter” is such a cute, fun, whimsical song!

This song is just perfect for a Dad/Daughter dance. I’ve seen the movie and didn’t realize that’s where the song was from. I’m sure most people won’t make the connection. Great pick!

Loudon is Rufus Wainwright’s and Martha Wainwright’s daddy…and their mom is yet another fantastic musician, Kate McGarrigle. Great choice of song!

Miss Stiletto, I’ve seen Knocked Up as well and I didn’t recognize the song from it either. And it sounds like the perfect song choice for your father/daughter dance :)

I’ve thought of using this song for a while now - and didn’t realize it was in Knocked Up! It’s a sweet song without being too sappy.

I had no idea the song was from Knocked Up, so I think you are good on that end. Very nice song!

This is exactly the song I am considering for our father/daughter dance!! I first heard it in Knocked Up, and I loved it!! My biggest concern wasn’t that it was associated with the movie, I worried that the lyrics sounded too much like he was talking to a “young daughter” rather than a “grown daughter”? But I love the song. It’s so simple and sweet! Thanks for posting this! I’ll be reading everyone’s responses to get a better idea of what to do.

I am dancing with my father to Bridge over Troubled Water…the Johnny Cash version. The lyrics describe our relationship very well, and the fact that it’s JC doesn’t hurt either…

@Miss Glitter:
I had the same thoughts - because he is singing to his young daughter. BUT, I’m thinking about it from the perspective that on your wedding day, your dad is probably recalling all of those memories of when you were small, and how much he cared that you had everything you needed, etc. So if anything, it just helps evoke those memories :)

I love this song. Its sweet (melody) and sassy(lyrics) at the same time. My dads a military man and has kind of a hard exterior so it was the perfect choice for us. It was either this or Achey Brakey Heart (Long story)

My friend danced with her dad to this song at her wedding in November….it was so cute :) It was more upbeat than most people are use to but everyone loved it and there were lots of happy tears :)
