My Birdcage

March 25th, 2009 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

I have to make a confession. Every time I see a yard sale/garage sale/estate sale sign, I have to go. It’s not like I’m there at 6:30 AM bright and early, and ready to scour through someone’s old stuff. And I think Mr. Cowboy Boot’s term “garbage sale” can be very apt, but if I happen to be on my way somewhere and that bright orange/yellow/purple sign perks up at me from a street corner, I’m following its arrow. Here’s why: I’m collecting vintage glass, Ball jars, lanterns, and, apparently, a birdcage, for our wedding.

This weekend I stumbled upon a sale run by a couple that is moving to Mexico. Among their goodies were handmade glass bottles, a cake stand, and a birdcage that I just didn’t want to leave without:

The Birdcage I Bought

Originally, I wanted to use it as a piece of decor–wire a couple of birds to the inside and some daisies to the outside and stick it on the escort card table. But after doing some research I’m getting all kinds of ideas for it.

A gift card holder?

As a candle holder (Except ours is wood. Not sure how well that would go down.):

Or as decor in our colors (see bottom right)?

Or in lieu of a guest book?

Which is your favorite?

I like it just as a decoration - it adds a great touch of whimsy! My second choice would probably be for holding god wishes

I love it as a place to drop well-wishes…. I think people will be interested in it when they see it and then they’ll be drawn to write something nice!

That;s a really cool looking one! :) I’d use it as a card box, pretty and functional!

We’re using you a few birdcages as our wedding as well. :) A few as decor and one on our guestbook table. I’m using vintage postcards, tying them to potted tree branches, and asking guests to sign them. I’m then asking them to drop them in a birdhouse so that a “little birdie can deliver them to us.”
So my favorite idea would have to be on the guest book table.

I have an addiction to garbage sales as well! Mr. Gloss does not approve -

I love the birdcage idea! All of it! I actually saw using it as centerpieces in a flower magazine and I loved the idea. I’m considering doing it myself! You have a good collection going so far! Keep searching!

oh my gosh- I have the black one in the guest book photo- and am planning to use it for just that! Now I can really visualize it! :) We are also using a white cage for the gift cards. I love the cage that you found! :)

I’m OBSESSED with birdcages! I can’t stop buying them at flea markets. (See also: teacups.) My mother is apparently obsessed too, as my parents have a collection of their own. For my wedding, I’m thinking of stringing them up in a cluster over…..something, the way you would paper lanterns. I’ll do it at varying heights. You could always indulge yourself and buy a few more and do the same!

I love garage sales! And birdcages!
I think it would be awesome to fill it with twinkle lights and have birdcage “chandeliers” hanging over every table.
But any of the other ideas are cute as well.

I’ve never thought of a birdcage as a guestbook before. My parents own shops and they sell a couple different types of cute birdcages- I may have to borrow one for this. Great post

I love this idea! One question - where will the cards go after the wedding? Are you going to scrapbook it? That’s the one thing on my mind which I have not gotten around and therefore has not been able to decide on doing the birdcage idea!
