About Mrs. Joey

Oh Craig, How I Love You and Your List!

March 25th, 2009 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Joey

Oh Craig, what can I say about you but that I love your list. It started out bumpy between us (a bad roommate experience) but in the last 2.5 years, it’s been nothing but wonderful. My first encounter with craigslist started out great, but ended badly. I found some nice girls to live with in DC who found an amazing house. Long story short, they were crazy, and I had to move.

Things turned around a few years ago when I was moving back to Seattle from DC (my second stint in the city) and I was looking for apartments to view while I was in Seattle for 4 days for a few interviews. Everything was too expensive, and I was about to give up when I read a posting titled, “3 bedroom apartment, North Beacon Hill, $1000″. If that wasn’t enough, the only picture on the listing was of a dragon made from tile. It said that the dragon was part of the custom designed bathroom. I called immediately and made an appointment for Saturday morning at 7AM. I was getting in at 11:30PM on the Friday before. The apartment was better than I imagined. We not only have 3 large bedrooms, but also 2 bathrooms, lots of closets, tile in both bathrooms, and bamboo floors though the whole place. We moved in 2 weeks later and have been there ever since.

Over the years, craigslist has provided me with amazing deals. $1000 leather couch from IKEA for $200? Check. Brand new Brother sewing machine for $50? Check! So when I needed help staying within my itty bitty budget, I went to craigslist.

My first find? The photographer.

I posted an ad online looking for a photographer in the $300 range. I targeted people in or just finishing photography school and second shooters hoping to branch out on their own. I didn’t think I would get much of a response, but I was wrong. I got 250 bids the first day! I had to pull the ad after 8 hours. Some work wasn’t very good, some people weren’t very nice, but there were 4 people with great work at the right price. I gathered all the great photographer interview questions everyone sent in to Weddingbee and condensed them down to 8 key points.

We met with 4 people a little while ago, and finally decided on Jess Carmichael. His pictures were lovely, his enthusiasm infectious, and the package was perfect. He’s amazing. He’s just starting out, but hopes to never charge more than $500 for his services in the future. He’s hoping to provide affordable photography for those on a budget. I couldn’t share all his pictures in this posting as they are protected, but I managed to put up one. More can be seen on his website.

We mailed out our deposit and couldn’t be happier! We’re the 11th wedding he’s booked for this year. Craig came through again. Actually, there were so many talented people who contacted us. It was really hard to pick from the 4 that we interviewed.

Our next craigslist find? My hair and makeup artist. Stay tuned to find out more!

Oh wow. That’s amazing. I’ve looked briefly on Craigslist for photographers but did not think about posting a services wanted ad.
Could you share with us the wording of your ad?
Did you ask for references or did you go with photographers that had websites up and running?
Would you mind sharing what you are getting for that rate?
Thanks SO much!

How smart of you Miss Joey! :) I go on Craigslist almost daily, but never thought of searching for vendors this way!

I heart the title of this blog post!
I’ve found a ton of wedding stuff on CL (votives, champagne glasses, a birdcage card holder, etc., etc.). I had zero luck trying to find a hair stylist, though (I posted an ad for someone to come to my hotel room to do my hair/makeup). One respondent basically touted his/her “massage” experience. Good times! So glad you found a good photographer on CL, though!

Wow, that’s a pretty great deal! Our photographer does it on the side and just charges $550 for a package of engagement, bridal and wedding pics.

Yay for great finds!

I love Craigslist, too! Once, I bought grill for $40, made good use of it, cleaned it up, and then sold it after a year for the same amount I bought it! All on Craigslist!

Great job on the photographer!

I would also love to know the wording for some of your posts. I was just thinking about posting on Craigslist for a hair/makeup artist!

You’re so smart Miss Joey! What an amazing find! I checked out his website and his work is phenomenal! Good job!
I never thought I could utilize Craig’s List for a hair and make up trial and I am still searching for a hair stylist. Thanks for inspiring me to look!

Oh, good for you! I feel similarly about ol’craig, and often joke that we are having the “Craigslist wedding” since so far my dress, our photographer, our fan favors, and our paper lanterns have all come from Craiglist!

I loved Craigslist when I lived in a city big enough to get good use of it. I too found my FI there — but not in the personals. Now you’ve got me thinking to check it out again…

I found my reception venue there after posting that I was looking for a venue. I spent months looking for myself. Awesome!

I found my cake baker AND a winter special of 150 free truffles with it!

By the way, Craig was our speaker at graduation. Since I sang the national anthem, I was sitting right behind him! haha

@MS. Joey, happilywaiting,Ic2be, & spraguebrude - I agree, we should have a Craigslist section! When we first met we were kinda hesitant (embarassed) to tell people we met on CL. Now I don’t even give it a second thought. Yahoo for CL men!

A good deal for you…but one reason why many photographers, including Jess Carmichael if he “never charges more that $500,” are going out of business.

Just the cost of a good professional-level camera is over $1500, you need two (they do break - maybe at your wedding), extra batteries, several lenses (again, quality lenses are $100 or so each, some much more). Overall, a decent photographer’s setup for a wedding is minimum $5000, (I have over $15000 in my case going to each wedding) so after ten weddings Jess will have stopped working for free-that year. Figure new every three, at least. Include computer gear & software, other expenses like a car, rent, etc. and doing even 50 weddings a year at $500 means going broke.

I really hope he does a good job for you, the industry’s issues aren’t your fault, but if I ever meet Jess I’ll be slapping him a few times to wake him up and explaining why in a few years he’ll be working another job so he can afford to be a photographer.
