One Ring… Wait, No, Two…

March 25th, 2009 @ 1:22 pm by Mrs. Crab Cake

Last week, with the delivery of my tax return from our lovely federal government and a lack of patience, I finally brought my wedding bands home.

I have to say that choosing wedding bands for myself was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced thus far. It was such a huge decision! I plan on wearing these rings the rest of my life.

Besides the obvious hugeness of picking out something I’m going to wear forever, there was also the challenge of finding something that matched my antique engagement ring.

I have literally been hunting for wedding bands since the proposal. At first, I thought a simple white gold band was the way to go. But, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted bling next to my e-ring.

So, I went on the hunt for a diamond band that would match my e-ring.

A friend of mine has a 5 stone prong set band that really caught my eye. She thought it would look fantastic next to my ring, so we tried it out. Of course, neither of us actually put on the other’s rings. Anyway, it looked pretty good. And I thought my mind was made up, so off I went to find the perfect 5 stone band.

I found some really nice prices online, but when I put a five stone next to my ring, something was just off. The 1/2 ctw rings were too big, and the 1/4 ctw rings didn’t fit right with my e-ring.

I kept looking.

I talked to the jeweler that found my e-ring, and sent him off on a hunt for a vintage band that matched mine. He suggested a 3 stone band.

We haven’t heard any good news from that sector, either.

The antique rings I found online were gorgeous, but either way wre out of our budget or not exactly what I had in mind. Of course, what I had in mind was a difficult thing to find, since I wasn’t actually sure what I had in mind.

I finally decided to go to the jeweler and actually put some rings on. What I found out was that Reed’s makes antique-style rings still, and they had a wedding band that matched mine almost perfectly. Unfortunately, through some math and comparison, the jeweler and I decided (once again) that the 1/2 ctw diamonds were too big for my ring. And the band doesn’t come in any other size.

At this point I started thinking about moving my e-ring to my right hand and finding a band that I liked, regardless of whether or not it matched. Mr. CC didn’t like that idea at all. I guess I didn’t either, but I was frustrated, and I get irrational when frustrated.

I went back to Reed’s and sat down with a different rep to try on rings. It wasn’t long before she pulled out a 7 stone 1/4 ctw curved band. I was on the other side of the counter wrinkling my nose. But, while I was putting the band on my finger where it would eventually sit, the rep was digging around for another 7 stone 1/4 ctw curved band. While the single band didn’t sell me on the look at all, I was more than pleased with both rings. They were enhancers of sorts, sandwiching my e-ring between two rows of diamonds.

Attack of the hairy knuckles!!

I was sold. I loved them so much that I put them on layaway without showing them to Mr. CC. He wasn’t happy about it, but when I brought them home and showed them to him, I think he understood.

Even though you can’t really tell in these pictures, the diamonds line up perfectly with the ends of my e-ring. That makes me really happy.

You can kinda see what’s left of the mishap with the wine bottles there on my middle finger. I hope that it’s less noticeable on the day of.

I plan on having the two bands soldered to my e-ring. They don’t exactly stay put where they are, and the band on my e-ring is really tiny and I’m always nervous I’m going to break it. So, I figure this will help “support” it.

And while we are on the topic, Mr. CC also picked his ring out.

It’s the Claddagh, again. I really like that we both picked something very “us”. I don’t really get into our Irish heritage as much as Mr. CC does.

Yeah, look at him all kilted up!

Anyway, he’s really happy with his choice, and I’m happy with mine!

Do you have an unusual wedding band (or bands)? What does it look like?

Wow…this is probably the most timely post (for me) that I’ve ever read on WB. This weekend FI and I went to try on wedding bands. I had something fairly specific in mind, but when the jeweler pulled out an enhancer for me to try, all of those preconceived notions flew out the window. So now I’m thinking of getting something very similar to yours. Oh, I have so many questions. Are you going to have them soldered before the wedding day? If so, you’ll be wearing your wedding bands before the big day. How do you feel about that? If not, how will Mr. CC put on the wedding bands during the ceremony? And yes, I am psycho lol.

@EAQ219: Thank you!
I plan on taking them in a week or two before the wedding to have them soldered, and then I will just be without them until the ceremony. Sad yes, but I’m not going to want to part with them after the ceremony and they are a little troublesome to wear right now.
So, I guess he’ll just slip them all on, together… Seemed easiest to me!

I can totally relate! My band search was frustrating, and went through all kinds of budgetary loops and changes….ultimately, I settled on a custom made plain white gold band that West Coast Groom can add diamonds to or modify in some other lovely way as a milestone anniversary present. Although I wish I had more sparkle right away, I also kind of like the idea that I have something else to look forward to as a future marker of our longevity. That’s what I’m telling my jealousy bone anyway.

Very pretty! I have an antique-style ring with a similar square setting as yours, so a straight band didn’t sit properly against it. I never really liked curved bands until I tried one on and saw how it lined up perfectly. Mine has eleven tiny diamonds with milgrain edges, to match the side stones of my e-ring. Never thought about having them soldered together… I may look into that! Although I kind of like my band on its own, too, for less blingy days.

Those are the EXACT rings I got! I also ended up with 2, because 1 just didn’t look right. Nice choice(s)! :)

What are some online resources for antique rings? I hadn’t thought about this route, but since my e-ring is antique, I’d love to go antique on the band too!

those bands together look great! I’m planning to convince my fiance to get me a second band to flank the other side of my e-ring for an anniversary present….I love that look!
And your antique ring is so pretty!

I have had the hardest time too! We finally went ring shopping a couple of weeks ago. We haven’t completely committed yet, but I think it will be a custom horseshoe shape ring that we will eventually join together. I still don’t know how I feel about this!

Yay! Another sandwich ring bride! I, too, settled on two 7-stone bands! Mine don’t have a curve though because my e-ring is very left to right. I love it!

@Miss Cowboy Boot: If you click on the source link for the antique picture, that’s a pretty good website. Otherwise, I just typed in “antique wedding bands” or some such variation, and went for it. Good luck!

Just a tip for you … mine is very similar, so I say this from experience. When you get the rings sized (if you need to) think about getting one a little bigger than the other. It sounds stupid, but your finger is thinner closer to your hand and a little larger as you go toward your fingers. I had mine both sized the same as the engagment ring (which fits perfectly) and the one that is on the outside is very uncomfortable after a few hours. I had talked about getting mine soldered too and the jeweler recommended upsizing the whol thing - she said that the thicker a band is the tighter it will seem, so the same thing applies when you combine 3 bands!

Ooh, I love how they look! That’s great that you both picked out rings that reflect your own tastes. My wedding band is non-traditional! Maybe I’ll post about it soon.

LOVELY!

I had the same problem with my antique engagement ring (it was my fiance’s great grandmothers - she got it in 1921). It’s a solitaire, but it has six prongs (therefore it bumps out any band placed next to it) and it is white gold (which was made differently then than it is now so modern white gold doesn’t match). I ended up with two rings as well. One is an enhancer in a pave setting - matches the era of the original ring very well. The other (the actual wedding band) is a halfway enternity ring that we had engraved 99 TO LIFE (It’s from a Lyle Lovett song called She’s No Lady, She’s Your Wife).
