About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Colors. Oh, Colors.

March 26th, 2009 @ 6:55 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

We are still figuring out our color scheme. I’m sort of basing it around which bridesmaid dress I go with, since I’m having trouble deciding! More on that later. In my search for the right colors, I’ve used quite a few tools around the internet. I want colors that are soft, romantic, girly, that will go well with the barn and the season (yellow Aspens), aren’t too reminiscent of Thanksgiving, and sit well with Mr. Cowboy Boot.

This picture has been a huge source of my drooling (that’s a saying). Peach, coral, gold, pink, and dusty rose. It looks soooo beautiful with this redhead, but I’m not sure our coloring is exactly the same.

(Style Me Pretty)

But as soon as I mentioned pinks and roses to Mr. CB, he immediately shied away from such feminine details. So, I started thinking about us (and what Mr. CB wouldn’t say no to) and I started visualizing colors based on natural elements: slate from river rock, emerald like lake water, white like flowers, tan like sand, leafy green like trees.

But, when it came time to actually start picking colors, I was swayed in a completely different direction, thanks to this cake picture:

It feels so sunny and warm. Also, fall in the mountains of Colorado is filled with brushed whites in Aspens’ branches, and golden yellows in their leaves. I started thinking that yellow, cream, white, brown, and gold would suffice, especially in a wooden barn surrounded by white tablecloths.

I found a couple of helpful tools online that break down your color scheme so you can carry it from vendor to vendor, detail to detail. First is DaGraeve.com’s Color Palette Generator. You enter the URL of an image you are attracted to and it spits out the colors that are in that image. I put in this picture:

(Martha Stewart Weddings)

And it gave me this:

(Idee Multicolr Search Lab)

Not exactly what we would go with–we would use more whites, creams, and less khaki tones–but it was close.

The next tool I tried was Idee’s Multicolor Search Lab Flickr Set. You put in your colors and it returns all of the images it finds on Flickr that include those colors. Here’s what I put in:

And here’s what it returned:

The last tool I tried was Color Hunter. I decided to use one of my original palettes with this by uploading this jpeg.

(Martha Stewart Weddings)

This was the custom palette it gave to me (too many reds):

(Color Hunter)

We still haven’t found an image that completely depicts our colors. But for now, these will do.

What tools/images did you use to find your color palette?

Thanks for the tips on those color sites; my colors are still all up in the air, so maybe that will help me narrow it down…or make me even more confused!

I love the multicolor search lab!
I definitely just hunted around until I found a picture with colors that made my heart sing. Colors are one of those few decisions that I haven’t changed my mind on…

Wow, I didn’t know they HAD tools like that!! Very cute! My color palette was simply chosen from an image burned into my memory: a yellow tulip laying on white linen. So I chose yellow (you go girl), green accent, and white accent. Our whole wedding is very nature-inspired, with white river rock, and mixes of new-shoot green and a bright sunny yellow.
Must be that Colorado thing…;-)

Ohhh! That’s neat! I just started accumulating images that I liked from various websites/blogs/google searches. :)

Miss CB, I heart roses too!

I’m liking the yellow flowers in the MS pic!

Ooo I love those natural colors. Very warm and inviting I think. I just made an inspiration board the other day for a summer wedding and it has most of the colors you’re looking for.

Check it out:

Let me know what you think!

I love the flickr tool where you can pick a color and get tons of images in that shade. That really helps to make your own color palette inspiration board! Great post!

I wanted to incorporate one of my fiance’s favorite colors (navy blue, hunter green, and burgundy)… Navy blue is impossible to find in flowers, and I didn’t want burgundy, so I built my palette around hunter green and the fact that we both like the outdoors. Thanks so much for these tools, though - they are so neat!
