Out With the Old

As part of spring cleaning, and just a new found motivation to get in shape and be more active, I decided to get on the bandwagon and do the Blueprint Cleanse. To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of cleanses or fasts. I’ve witnessed a few of my friends on the Master Cleanse– the maple syrup concoction did not seem at all appetizing to me. But after some thorough research and reading the info-packed Blueprint Cleanse site, I decided to give it a shot. What sold me was that the program was not about fasting, but more about replacing solid food with fresh and unpasteurized juices to detox your system.

I selected the five-day Renovation Cleanse– which just means more fruit infused drinks and fewer “green” drinks. It’s not cheating, but for first timers, the Blueprint staff told me that the Renovation is the way to go.

As the week leading up to my cleanse approached I did try to eat less red meat and add in more veggies… but I was at a work trade show the week before, and well, I didn’t stick to the plan entirely! Still, I was feeling positive about the whole thing and thought that my sheer willpower would get me through day one.

The juices arrived on Sunday night. They’re numbered from 1 - 6. I put them right into the fridge as instructed. They came in cute insulated cooler bags (which I have been toting around to work) and even a little cheat card in case I do feel the need to chew on something. The card lists a few “safe” food options if you can’t hold out.

I started off Day One with a green drink that did not taste as bad as I expected. In fact, it didn’t taste bad at all. It was like a lemony-salad. I continued every two hours with new drinks that included a delicious pineapple mix and another lemonade-like drink. It wasn’t until the afternoon that I started to feel the hunger pangs. By 4PM I had a mean headache and was super crabby. My stomach made loud, grumbling noises. I had a class that night at 6:30PM and just decided to cancel because all I could think about was food! I had my second to last juice of the day, which was a beet mix that wasn’t so bad, but still wasn’t satiating me. That night I went home and hoped that I wouldn’t succumb and start to stuff my face with chips or anything I could lay my hands on. I waited until it was time to have my last drink, the infamous Cashew Nut Milk… wow, was it worth it. It is still my favorite drink of the program. It’s a nutty and cinnamon flavored with a smoothie texture. After the last bottle, I was feeling a lot better and almost satiated. I am proud to say I made it through that night without caving and eating like a maniac.

Today I’m on Day Four. Despite the minor meltdown on Day One, I haven’t felt better. With my normal routine, I am usually hungry the minute I wake up. This has always been the case since I was a child. I wake up and have a big hearty breakfast. But these past few days, I’ve woken up and not felt hungry at all! I drink my first bottle before leaving the house and then parcel out the rest throughout the day. I don’t even check the clock anymore. My body has adjusted to the rhythms of the program and I head to the fridge for another bottle when I feel the need to refuel. I was able to continue with all my daily activities, including rigorous Pilates classes in the evenings, without a hitch.

I feel energized. I sleep better (without any sleep aids—once in a while, I take a Benadryl Allergy to help me sleep). I’ve lost 8 lbs. since Monday. And the biggest triumph? As an avid caffeine addict, I haven’t had any coffee since Sunday, and I’m still OK. I am most surprised that I’m not hungry and I don’t crave food as much. On Day One, you realize how much of your day revolves around food: planning your next meal, eating out with friends, even all the TV commercials! Now I feel more immune to it. I can even read Gourmet magazine without any tummy grumbles!

One side effect is that I tend to go to the bathroom to pee more. Aside from that, everything else is fine.

So for anyone looking for a way to jumpstart your system, I highly recommend Blueprint Cleanse. They deliver to your door if you’re local to New York (even to Connecticut) and they also ship nationwide. It’s on the pricey side, but I figured it’s five days of food replacement, so the math worked out OK to me. If you’ve got a few friends interested, discounts are offered for groups of three or more.

Have you tried a detox system like Blueprint or the Master Cleanse? Did you stick with it? What were your results?

I did a detox diet about a month ago–I could only eat protein like nuts and eggs, fruit veggies and meats.

It was really hard but I’m glad I did it. I think I need to do it for longer than a week for it to really work, but it jumpstarted my water drinking habit. I was hungry and felt sick for the first 3 days before my body regulated itself.

This detox looks a little easier to manage because they give you juices. The hardest thing is finding the right things to eat/drink

wow!
it costs $85 per day for nationwide delivery!!
I can’t afford that :(
Lucky you are local! How long do you think you’ll do this for?

I’ve been waiting on your results!!! I have really really horrible willpower… I do have to admit, eating is always the best part of my day. Sad, but true. I do really want to do this.. I’d like to do it sometime when I am with Mr. Peng for an entire week, so we can do it together. Its pricey, but if it works, it works! Keep me updated :)

What kind of cheater foods are there, like fruits? I think I could do this if i were allowed to eat a grapefruit a day. I love friggin grapefruits!

Of course you don’t feel as hungry … if you eat less, your appetite decreases.

But 8lbs since Monday? You do know it’s only Thursday, right?

And what happens when you start eating solid food again?

That’s what I wanna know! (re: Lou’s question) I’ve had pals who’ve done detox diets gain all the weight back after the program’s over. What are the benefits of doing this besides kinda building up your willpower and flushing out your body, so to speak?

I can’t afford this either, but I do have a juicer. I’m curious to try a juice fast.

@lou: Good point. I just want to clarify that I’m not on this cleanse to lose weight and it was a nice “side effect.” Once I start on solid food again, I plan to continue with less red meat and more good protein like seafood. The cleanse is just a way for me to kickstart better eating habits and detox my system.

@phruphru: I was pretty skeptical of my other friends’ diets too… but the benefits for me really ARE to flush out my system and to feel more energized. It’s nice to lose some weight on the side, but that’s not my ultimate goal.

@Allie: Tomorrow’s my last day! I’m only on the five day cleanse. I would like to do this once every couple of months, i.e. after the holidays or a big vacation.

Sounds like you really responded well to this program! You should post a follow up on this in a month or so and let us know how you’re doing! Your enthusiasm is engaging!

@Mrs. Penguin: You can’t eat fruit. :( The suggestions include: celery sticks, cucumber slices, a quarter of an avocado, warm low sodium veggie broth. I’m an eater too. I think about food all the time, but surprisingly, I haven’t in the past three days!

@JennyBryde: Thanks! I will definitely post a followup with more results. I plan to continue with an exercise regimen as well, so all of this combined will hopefully get me back into shape!

@lou: @phruphru: Wow, what’s with the negative vibes?? You’re not on the knot guys…

EVERY diet starts by dumping your water weight, there’s nothing unhealthy about it! Like ALL diets, you have to EAT SENSIBLY to continue to lose weight. You can’t go on a detox diet, then eat nothing but snickers bars and not expect to regain the weight.

GREAT idea to jumpstart your metabolism Mrs. C!!

@Mrs. Canary: ahhh bummer! I could totally do the low sodium veggie broth. I was just just thinking I could do the quarter of an avocado but I’d have to douse salt all over it. Bet that’s not allowed! Haha.

I think if I’m able to get on a somewhat normal schedule, this will be perfect for a kickstart for me. Def. check in with us next week and let me know if you’re able to change your eating habits without totally dying for the old reliables!

I’ve often thought about trying one of these. Can’t wait for your follow-up Mrs. Canary!! The no-coffee part would be wayyyy hard for me :)

When I feel like I have eaten too much and need to detox I found two things to be really helpful. First, a 24 hour fast with just water — no coffee, tea, etc. It helps your body restore glucose levels and sort of reset itself. The second thing I like is making spinach or kale smoothies and have 1 or 2 per day. Basically, 3 cups of kale or spinach, maybe 1/2 a banana, 1 cup milk (I use almond milk), 1 tbsp. of flax seeds, and ice. These are so filling and natural. I’ll eat as clean as possible and maintain around 1200-1400 calories. I don’t feel deprived and I feel better overall. A juice diet seems too hard to maintain and kind of pricy. Thanks for the review.

@MightySapphire:
The ‘negative vibes’ are because I have negative views on these detox diets. Didn’t realise it was only the knot where you could show differing points of view.

Thanks for the reply Mrs Canary - glad to hear you have a sensible approach to it. Just didn’t want you to be dispondent if you gain a couple of pounds back!

@Mrs. Canary, thanks for giving us more info. When you say you’re not doing it to lose weight, it doesn’t sound so wacky, after all. I’ve even heard that fasting every once in a while is good for cleansing. Fasting for weightloss, of course is not so smart.

@MightySapphire: Yes, Weddingbee is less snarky than TheKnot, but that doesn’t mean we have to be cheerleaders or agree with every single idea posted here. Sometimes, a gal has questions.

I actually just started talking to my FI about this. We are both HUGE foodies and skipping just one meal seams like the the biggest feat but I think we’re gonna do it! As of now we set the date as the day after Easter.. please keep us posted on all the benefits!

Thanks for the info Mrs. Canary! I’ve always wanted to try something like this especially when I’m feeling like I’ve been eating poorly and want to “cleanse” by body. I wish there was a similar program to this where I live (in Canada)

@MightySapphire: I think they were just asking questions, and legit ones at that. I admit to me a detox diet does seem kind of crazy from the outside, and we know fasting for weight loss alone is not the healthy way. I look forward to hearing more about the benefits

@Mrs. Penguin: My FI totally gives me hell about jazzing up my avocado with salt… glad to hear I’m not the only one with this habit!
Of course, it could also be because I add salt to lots of stuff - I’ll eat tomato slices with a little salt, I put it on hard boiled eggs, but the thing he finds the weirdest is melons - watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melons - I maintain it makes them taste sweeter if you put a little salt on them, but he’s not buying it.
