Wiki of the Day: Dessert Reception

March 26th, 2009 @ 12:15 pm by Wiki

I was browsing all the options for the wiki of the day, and the Dessert Reception wiki really piqued my interest! Mr. Penguin and I have never attended a dessert reception, but the idea sounds lovely! When I close my eyes, I imagine huge colorful displays of cakes and desserts, and maybe even a big candy buffet in coordinating wedding colors! There are so many great ideas out there for desert receptions, but where to begin? Hopefully, at the weddingbee wiki!

Some of the trickiest parts of planning a dessert reception are the wording of the invitations, and the appropriate time and place for one. If you’ve hosted a dessert reception, we’d love for you to share with us your invitation wording! In addition, what kinds of desserts can you serve? What are some fun drinks and treats to complement the desserts? What is an appropriate venue for a dessert reception? Share your ideas with us in the dessert reception wiki:

If you’re unsure how you can contribute to the wiki, take a peek at this wiki article on how to edit a wiki. Check it out and share your expertise! Or, if you’re shy, just leave your tips in the comments, and we can add them to the wiki for you!

I chose to have a dessert reception to keep my wedding budget low. I was married April 8, 2006 in romantic St. Augustine, Florida! We held our wedding ceremony and reception in a banquet room of a hotel. The previous year I attended a dessert only reception and her ceremony began at 6:30pm. The reception began around 7:30pm. I decided to use the same time slots for mine since it seemed to work for her.
Since my ceremony and reception were in the same room, we invited guests to enjoy the desserts while the wedding party took pictures. We served the following beverages: coffee, tea, punch and water. We served tiny finger desserts like cream puffs and bachlava squares. Also, we had a beautiful 3 tiered wedding cake and carrot cake for the Groom’s cake. (guests had to wait for the wedding cake until we could cut and serve!)
Since the guests didn’t have to drive to another location for the reception, they stayed entertained with big band music (our friend was the DJ) and snacked on desserts while we took pictures. We were announced at the reception around 7:45pm and enjoyed the festivties!
Also, since I didn’t serve dinner, I opted to have several long tables and chairs set up for guests. I chose the simple decor of round mirrors with hurricane vases, candles, sprinkled rose petals, tulle and antique framed pictures of me and my husband. After the ceremony, guests chairs were positioned around the room to provide more space during the reception. This way, they would have table access, room to sit/relax and yet the ability to fluidly move about and dance! I maintained an elegant and romantic ambiance by using low lights in the room and lots of candles.
My goal was to have a simple yet elegant wedding and I feel that was accomplished. I didn’t want me or my family to accrue any debt for the wedding, so that really guided my decision to not serve dinner. It seems like EVERYONE spends thousands of dollars on weddings, but don’t believe the hype! It is only one day…even though it’s extremely special, we don’t have to spend TONS of money to make a wedding memorable.
Best of luck and feel free to write for more advice or questions!
