About Mrs. Joey

Cracking Craig

March 27th, 2009 @ 10:27 am by Mrs. Joey

So, a few readers asked me what I posted on Craigslist to find my awesome photographer and super duper hair/make-up artist.

More or less, this is what I posted:

Wedding Photographer Needed - $300

We’re getting married in August 2009 and are in search of a photographer. We are on a very, very tight budget but hoping to still get beautiful pictures to commemorate our big day. We are looking for at least 4-5 hours of shooting time (300-400 images), 30 pictures edited/touched up, and all images raw and edited on a CD.

This would be a perfect job for a second shooter trying break out on their own or photography student trying to build their portfolio. We have a lot of friends getting married soon, so this would also be a good way to spread the word about your talents.

Please send us a note if you’re interested, listing what services you can provide within our listed budget and a link to some of your work.

The wedding is in Sammamish.

Hair and Makeup Artist needed — $100

I’m getting married in August 2009 and looking for a hair and makeup artist to make me pretty for the big day.

I’m getting married in Sammamish but live in Seattle, so I can come to you (if need be) if you live in Seattle, Bellevue or Sammamish. I’d like to do a hair/makeup trial before the big day.

This would be great for a salon stylist trying to make a little extra on the side or a recent Gene Juarez or Aveda Institute student or graduate.

Please send me a note if you are interested and can work within my wedding budget. Also, if possible, please send me a link to any previous hair/makeup work you’ve done.

~~~
There are a few things I think you should know and do before you post your ad.
Know:
  • What you want
  • What you want to pay – we told ourselves $300-400 and no more
  • What you are willing to compromise on – I knew $100 wasn’t much for a hair/makeup artist, so I was willing to go to them.
Do:
  • Your homework – look up what popular vendors are charging for the service you are seeking. It will help you understand why you can’t get a second shooter, 500 edited images and an engagement shoot for $300.
  • Be clear what you can provide. We have a lot of friends getting engaged, so we could refer people to Craigslist vendors.
  • Be ready to be slammed both in the number of responses you receive and the tone of them. I got over 250 responses the first day. I also got some very NOT nice responses. One person told me that I must look really cheap and it was no wonder I didn’t care about quality photos.
When you get down to a few candidates, make sure you come prepared with questions and ask them to bring samples of their work. We asked photographers to send us their work, but seeing them online and seeing them in person are two different things.
What we’re getting:
We are definitely getting a steal of a deal. Jess is providing us with 9 hours of shooting including over 900 shots, about 100 edited images (more if he has time), 4 DVDs of all the images in color, black and white, and sepia, and the ability to buy all our pictures from whatever online vendor we like. We are responsible for archiving the photos. Those are the biggies.
I hoped my Craigslist advice helped out!
Great post! I’ve been searching the craigslist ads, but I’m too nervous to post one yet!! Unfortunately we are getting married in the middle of nowhere, so the # of response’s we would get is probably limited -
Thank you SO much for those tips. They really were extremely helpful.
I can’t believe someone left you such a nasty comment about “looking cheap”.
And I definitely agree about trying to sell them too on what they can benefit from the deal. I’ve been doing that when negotiating w/photographers.
I’m not convinced yet if I would post for a photographer but I have looked for bakers (I’m sure there are TONS of SAHM who are amazing bakers that want a little extra cash!) and thinking of looking for a DJ too. The guy/girl needs to play music and have a personality! I don’t want to pay over 1K for that! I have no problems with telling the DJ exactly what to play as long as they have the music. =\
Thanks again!
Great tips! My sister is getting married in November and found a videographer for $500, a photographer for $100 (!!!) and a free DOC, all on Craigslist.
This is great! I may borrow your ad for hair/make up word for word, if that’s okay. How far in advance did you place the hair/make up ad? Our wedding isn’t until September 2010, but I’d be interested in trying to find someone through Craigslist.
Thanks for the post :) I already found my photographer, but I think I’ll definitely post this for a hair/makeup artist. As a side note, my brother is trying to breakthrough in the wedding DJ market (as is my cousin as a videographer), and they both use craigslist to get most of their clients!
I posted a DOC trade (I’ll cover your wedding, you cover mine) on Craigslist, and got some good responses.
Also found a link to my makeup artist (though I’m paying $120 for the day, and $40 for the trial - which is a great deal, considering her work).
Oh, and my DJ… who also had a link to his site.
I did exactly the same thing for our photographer, and ended up with a STEAL myself–I have 2 shooters all day for $900, and the engagement shoot was just an extra $100, all the pics, edited and unedited on CD and an album for us.
I found my videographer on Craigslist. I just did a search in my area and found a few that I contacted. My first reaction to his price list - it was so cheap that I figured it must be a joke! I ignored it for awhile and looked around for others. Then I thought- I might as well give this guy a chance. We met with him at Starbucks, he was so cool and he has worked with our photographers. And basically is just starting out in the business and needed clients. So we got him for $300….he now charges $1200 and has a nice website and blog. I feel very lucky to have found him early!
Triple check these things - we found a videographer on craigslist who had an amazing portfolio and a really low price - if it is too good to be true - it probably isn’t true. He’d stolen some of the videos for his portfolio from some much better, more established, and understandably more expensive videographers. Many brides are crushed when what they end up with isn’t the same quality as the portfolio they looked at - so do your homework. :)
Thanks SO much Miss Joey! I will try posting for the makeup+hair trial. I hope this can work out because I need a hair stylist, I booked the makeup with MAC but can always cancel if I find someone good.
Thanks again!
Miss Joey, question for you, would the $100 for the makeup/hair cover the trial as well? I know this question may sound silly but I just wanted to clarify. Thanks!
@TechGirl: Yep. It covers my trial as well. Ashley usually charges more but I think I got lucky.
@JennyBryde: I put the ad out in November last year.
Also what might help for those looking for MUA’s and Photographers, check out sites such as Musecube and Modelmayhem. Alot of photographers and mua’s are always looking for side jobs and freelance work and usually are willing to work with you or even TFP(Time For Prints) meaning you would give me a few photos of their work for their portfolio
