Tissue Paper

March 27th, 2009 @ 4:50 pm by Mrs. Mascara

Check out these dahlia napkin rings. We’re probably going to use white linen napkins, rather than try to find a color that goes with our scheme. White is just easier and cheaper. I was thinking of placing a real dahlia on each place setting to dress it up a bit, but these tissue flowers could work too. Maybe I can recruit some helpers for this project, as my list of projects keeps growing and growing. There’s a how-to from Martha for this project, as well.

I would go for the paper tissue flowers Miss M!
I just made one of the big hanging flowers a couple of weeks ago & it came out almost perfect. They’re so pretty!

Those tissue paper flowers are gorgeous! I voted to use those! Will they be difficult to transport though?

dahlias are in season in september - they won’t be too expensive, and can add an organic touch to the wedding! I don’t think going with real flowers would be lazy, especially since they’ll be in season.

one thing to think about… how many tissue flowers will you need? they’re a pain to make if you need a lot. trust me. i did the “cheap” route and although i love how the look, they got really annoying to make. luckily, i knew from the beginning of my engagement that i wanted them so i had plenty of time to make them all.

I voted to go the tissue paper route… that is, of course, if you have the time :)

I made these exact flowers, with the Martha instructions, to make 3 tissue paper pomanders for our ceremony and they were super easy to make. The first few were kind of ugly looking, and I agree with irmango that I got tired of doing it after a while, but if you are able to get some extra labourers involved, you could do them in a couple of nights (I’m assuming you want one for every place setting, so like 200?? You could always consider alternating and halving the work!)

just to give you a timeframe, i just made these for a bridal shower, and it took me about 2.5 hrs to make 15, though i might be extraordinarily slow. i think they’re really cute for a daytime event, but might be a bit casual for a nighttime event… but at 16 flowers per $.97 tissue paper pack, it sure is a good value! and it’s definitely something you can get other people to help with since it’s super easy to do!

tissue paper flowers are a good idea, and they can be re-purposed after the wedding.

I don’t think Tissue Paper flowers are the “cheap route” I think they’re more unique than real flowers and SUPER cute!

Love the Martha tissue poufs! I’ve planned to use them even though I;m sure they will get very monotonous to make :)

I had two large faux rose wreaths that were on clearance for ~$6 each. When it was sitting in the living room a month before the wedding, a friend thought it was odd that I had picked up my flowers so early. She thought it was real! It made me so happy. :D

I would try to find some paper flowers that are mostly pre-fabricated and go semi-DIY if you are going to go DIY at all. It could be a major pain and not at all cheaper in the long run to make these yourself, especially if there are a lot to do. Maybe you could try out making one and see how it goes? They are totally gorgeous, either way.

But water+tissue paper=color bleeding onto stuff. Don’t you worry about all that colored tissue wreaking havoc?

i tried making these yesterday after reading your post. oh my gosh! the sheer beauty/awesomeness of these far exceeds the amount of time put in. granted making 200 of might be extremely tedious, but you can always do it while watching tv…or better yet, while drinking wine with some bridesmaids. i say definitely go for it! the visual impact will totally be worth it.

Have you thought about checking out similar looking fake flower when they go on sale for like 50-70% off at Michael’s , Joann’s or what not? Might meet in the middle price wise and time wise when DIYing. Sometimes you can find great looking fake flowers… good luck!
