Mrs. Deviled Egg's Picture
Mrs. Deviled Egg, Pittsburgh Age and Occupation: 27, Public Relations Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Accounting Engagement Date: December 24, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: October 21, 2008 Venue: Historic auditorium and meeting hall in one of Pittsburgh's commuter cities About Me: I am obsessed with all things crafty, especially scrapbooking, knitting, jewelry-making & cake decorating. I also love being an aunt, wrapping presents, watching football (Go Steelers!), shopping at yard sales and consignment stores, procrastinating, singing and learning to play the guitar. When it comes to wedding planning, I'm excited about working on DIY projects and finding creative ways to stay under budget. Of course, nothing is more exciting to me than knowing that the wonderful Mr. Deviled Egg will be my husband.
About Mrs. Deviled Egg

I find it rude when a cashier doesn’t greet me as I enter their checkout lane. (At Walmart, the credit card pin pad asks you if your cashier was friendly today and I’ve been guilty of checking “no” when deserved.) I’m a no-pickle-on-a-cheeseburger person, and I always request it, so I really dislike getting attitude from a fast food clerk when I bring my pickle-clad burger to the front with hopes of correcting my order. With the way our economy is heading, I really don’t understand why more employers don’t stress the importance of customer service to their employees. My money is good at lots of stores, so please, earn my business by being friendly, courteous, and concerned if I have an issue.

That said, shopping for a bustier to support the girls on the wedding day brought a surprisingly awesome customer service experience at a major department store.

Before I tell you the good, let me tell you the bad. I had my first gown fitting over the weekend, so a few weeks before, I knew I needed to purchase the appropriate undergarments to go with my dress. I needed a strapless, nude, or ivory long-line bra, so I set out to what I thought would be the best place to find one—a bridal store. I’m not going to name names, but this was a bridal chain store for which I’ve read positive reviews for their bra offerings.

When I got to the store, I told them what size bra I normally wear, but told them I was unsure about size since I heard the long-line bras fit differently. The sales attendant handed me two sizes and showed me a dressing room. She said to holler if I needed help and then walked away. Well, I’m not Gumby, nor am I as flexible as an Olympic gymnast, so putting on a long-line bra by myself was near impossible.

I got the top hook closed, but it was a no-go for the rest. I, basically topless in the dressing room, called out for the attendant, but got nothing. I struggled some more with the bra and got a few more hooks connected, but I was getting frustrated. I took the darned thing off and decided to leave. I didn’t need their non-returnable, uncomfortable bra anyway.

In my state of “what the heck am I going to do now”, I decided to wander around in the mall nearby. On a whim, I walked into the Nordstrom store to see if they had long-line bras in their lingerie department. I didn’t see any on their racks, and just as I was about to leave, a sales person asked me if I needed help. I told her what I was looking for, and she said they have them in the back room, but only in strapless. Perfect! I gave her my size and expressed my uncertainty. She gave me two to try on in the dressing room and waited outside the door for me to let her know when I needed her help. She fastened all the little hooks for me and it was too big. She helped me get out of the thing and into the next one. It was a better fit, but still not quite right.

Since they didn’t have my size in stock, she told me they could order one for me and have it shipped directly to my house at no extra cost. Sweet! Although, I was still hesitant since I didn’t actually try it on in my size. No worries, though. Nordstrom would let me return it if it didn’t work out. So, it was delivered to my house in a few days and I was able to try it on with my dress. That was a much better outcome than what happened at the bridal store. I was even happier when I paid—the bustier was only $50. The non-returnable ones at the poor-service bridal store had price tags of $69 and $79 attached to them. It ended up being a perfect fit for me and my dress.

I was really impressed with the level of service I received at Nordstrom, but I was even more impressed when I got this in the mail about a week later:

img_0054

This was my first ever purchase at a Nordstrom, so I’m not sure if this is their protocol, but I really appreciated the note. Outside of the time I bought my car, I never got a hand-written thank you/follow-up note in the mail for a purchase I made. Thanks, Lisa! The customer service you gave me will definitely encourage me to shop at your store again.

Where have you received great customer service while securing your wedding purchases?

Thanks for sharing your story! I need to get a long-line bra as well, and since I’m rather small-chested, I’m nervous about this!

A Nordstrom just opened relatively close to where I live, so I think I’ll have to go over there and check it out!

I think that Nordstrom has really stepped up the customer service. I just got sent shoes and make-up with free shipping. No, not a thank you note, but the people there were almost too helpful :). In a good way.

I love Nordstrom. Their customer service is always the best. Some of their prices are steep, but it’s great quality and you can’t beat their return policy! =)

@Miss Bruschetta: I’m concerned about this as well. Let me know if you find the perfect bustier to hold up the minis (as I like to call them! :-))

Aw, I got a thank you note from Nordstroms a few months ago and was completely blown away. It’s really effective customer service, I agree.

I am a BIG Nordstroms fan. What you got is par for the course superior Nordstrom service. They are held up as a customer service standard throughout the industry. They are definitely pricier than other department stores, but the quality of the products and consistently fantastic service has made me a dedicated customer over the years.

I love Nordstrom’s and their return policy. I think you can return most of your online purchases in-store, which means you don’t have to pay to ship something back if it doesn’t work out! And no time limits on returns.
I agree that in this economy, sales staff should realize that their attitude can make all of the difference. If they are friendly and helpful, customers will come back. If they are rude, people can & will take their money elsewhere.

i’ve shopped for many things at nordstrom — from clothes, jewelry, purses, and even a bed (oh the Heavenly bed is well — heavenly!). i continue shopping there because it’s always a fabulous experience. not to mention their return policy is the best in the business… i had a bracelet break after NINE MONTHS OF PURCHASE AND WEARING IT, and what did they do? return it for either cash back or give me a new one — no questions asked! they’ve done this for me on numerous occasions… it’s truly a great company and i appreciate great customer service (seeing that I worked at In-N-Out for 8 years and that is their BIGGEST thing we learn about and achieve with that company).

Something else great about Nordstrom’s: for most clothing items you buy there (as long as they’re not on sale) they offer free in-store alterations!

Well played, Ross Park Nordstrom! I’ll have to check them out for my wedding-day undergarment purchases! I purchased a flip-flops for my bridesmaids and a rehearsal dinner dress at the J. Crew in Shadyside and received a handwritten note as well! It is a nice touch.

Any Bee opinions on wearing bras vs. having cups sewn into your dress?

I was a manager in the designer department at Nordstrom for 3 years. Now 2 years later I still miss working for them. I left to get a 9 to 5 job, but miss working for such a customer oriented business.
They put each and every employee through extensive training and only hire people they think will really “service” the customer. I always purchase through Nordstrom when I can.
I’m still always proud when I hear someone had yet another great experience at one of their store.

Being a native Seattlelite, I grew up with Nordstrom. They’re the best. Actually the best is when you get high enough up in their annual sales categories (ugh…don’t ask how I got there) and you get a personal shopper! They’re REALLY the best.

i agree, it seems like good customer service is more of a privilege these days, instead of the standard. i don’t know if i’ve ever actually bought anything from nordstrom, but i will go out of my way to shop at a store if i know i will receive great customer service from them.

Their customer service is great. Up until a few years ago they even had free alterations! You story is so true, in this economy I think businesses should be doing everything they can to keep me from going to the store next door.

I was turned off by the beginning of your post. It’s great nordstrom has wonderful customer service, however, was is necessary to tell us you’re one of those people who can’t pick the pickle off a 99 cent burger if it is mistakenly added?

I LOVE Nordies! They are my favorite b/c of their customer service :) I recently bought 2 bras there and the sales lady pretty much brought me EVER bra in my size. I felt so bad b/c that meant she also had to put them back, but she had a smile the whole time and I found the perfect bra. I will forever go there for bras b/c of that experience :)

I loved your post re: the bustier! I had flashbacks of myself in the dressing room trying to figure out how I was supposed to get it on myself. Luckily the girl at Nordstrom came back and helped me. We had quite a lot of fun trying to find one appropriate for a chesty girl! Did you try it on with your dress yet?

Yo, Ann…if you’re having a bad day take a bubble bath and relax. No need to write mean things on WB! In the future, if you’re turned off from the beginning…stop reading. You can do it!

And just while we’re on the subject, how hard is it to leave off the pickle in the first place. Just sayin’…

99 cent burger, 50 dollar bustier, or 1,000 dollar dress… doesn’t matter the amount spent. The best customer service is someone who will LISTEN to your needs/requests, and do their utmost to see that you are satisfied. And yes, Nordstrom is great at that! :D

Can I get a big AMEN on this post? You hit the nail right square on the head! I agree with you 100%, and I have walked out of or ceased doing business with of far too many places to count due to their lack of customer service, and general concern for me as a customer.

I worked hard for every penny in my wallet, so why should I hand it over to someone that isn’t appreciative of my business, or is just plain rude?

Oh if some companies KNEW how their staffed truly handled their precious clients…

Great post!

Nordstrom lingerie departments are hands down the best I’ve visited. I was tired of the crummy service and poorly made products at VS and happened to wander into Nordstrom one day. They were SO incredibly nice… and they figured out I was wearing the wrong bra size. It’s now the only place I will shop for any type of lingerie (their pjs are comfy too)!

It’s amazing how much more susceptible one can be to annoyance when one is trying wriggle into an undergarment unassisted :-).

Nordstrom’s is fabulous for specialty undergarments, particularly for those of us with…larger assets. My size (34-DDD) is not typically easy to find, but I’ve always had great luck with Nordstrom’s - and, as you said, the staff is always attentive and helpful.

I had a similar experience with White House Black Market! I bought all my bridesmaid dresses from one of their outlets, and the girl who spent SO MUCH TIME with me on the phone getting all the sizes together wrote me a sweet note! I was VERY impressed by their customer service!!!!

it wasn’t wedding related, but i had received fantastic service from zappos. a pair of shoes i ordered had gone missing [called both zappos and ups, ups was less than helpful] and the rep i got tried her best to locate them and even ordered replacement shoes for me. and later sent two notes, one hoping the replacement pair fit and a second to follow up once they were able to straighten out the shipping snafu. i was in love.

My planner has given me above and beyond helpful customer service. I know, I know…that’s what she’s paid to do, but I actually won her services in a contest. So really, she could totally dismiss me and give me minimal assistance, but she has been THE BEST THING EVER! She makes things so easy and fun instead of labor intensive and stressful. I count my lucky stars every day for her! :)

Going shopping for the “perfect” bra to make my wedding gown fit even better and thought I’d check WB quick before heading out (it’s my addiction!)…… thanks for your perfect timing! Going the other direction now - to Nordstrom - a store that I would have never have thought of for this purchase! DE - you’re the best!!!

Nordstrom’s customer service is the best! Once I bought a $30 wrap dress from what is essentially the junior’s department, and got a thank you note. I’m always willing to spend a little more there - even though, as in your case, it is sometimes a better price too - because of their service and amazing return policy. Glad you could turn others on to them.

I have never recieved a hand written note, but they also have a really good shoe department. I wear a size 11 and at ‘other’ department stores i get snotty looks when asking if they have a shoe in my size. At Nordstrom they are very polite and even if they don’t have my size in that shoe they offer to order it and always bring out similar styles. I <3 Nordstrom!

That is so great! I love when I get handwritten thank-you notes. We went to Jared the other day to look at rings. We didn’t buy anything, but a few days later we got a handwritten note thanking us! For just looking! I was definitely impressed and that will make me go back in the future.

Oh, and I’ve learned not to confuse the fast food people…they’ll inevitably get my order wrong. Ugh.

It’s nice to hear about a company that places such a high value on customer service! I work in retail, and often wonder if customer service is dead. Often, I find myself thinking, “if I treated one of my customers the way that person just treated me, I’d lose my job!” Thanks for sharing your positive experience!!

I always appreciate good customer service. At dinner the other night our semi-non-existant server didn’t offer up much of a ‘thank you, have a nice evening’ when she picked up our check and tip, a rather nice tip I might add.

Hey Ann, who left the pickle on your burger? Sorry, I couldn’t resist…

So I recently learned that Nordstrom (apparently) makes every one of their employees start on the sales floor. It doesn’t matter where you ultimately want to be in the corporate hierarchy, you’ve got to start by dealing with the customers. I think that’s part of why their customer service is so good — they’ve got a lot of motivated folks out there.
