The Rings

March 29th, 2009 @ 1:00 pm by Mrs. Mascara

Recently Mr. Mascara and I went to Jared to get my engagement ring fixed. We had taken it to a different Jared location shortly after he proposed in order to get the prongs smoothed a little (they were a bit sharp and I kept scratching myself with my ring). The jeweler was apparently not the best, and he pretty much destroyed the head. When we brought it in (to a different store) and showed the jeweler who sold it to Mr. M, they actually had to replace the head because it was beyond repair. So that was good for me, but probably not so good for the jeweler that messed it up! I am so happy they replaced it though, and my ring looks perfect again.

While we were there, we decided to look at wedding bands. Mr. M chose a very simple white gold band, which was brushed in the middle and smooth along the edges.

I had no clue what I wanted to get, but I told the lady that I was very open to wearing my wedding band on my right hand if I couldn’t find something to go with my engagement ring.

I realize this isn’t the most traditional way to wear a wedding ring, but my engagement ring can stand on its own. Plus, I like to do things a little differently!

The first ring I liked was a right hand ring, and consisted of what looked like two thin diamond and white gold bands, but they were connected together. This ring looked very pretty on its own, but I couldn’t really change my mind and put it on my left hand with my e-ring. It just wouldn’t look right.

The next ring I chose was actually from the same collection as my e-ring. It was one thin diamond band, and could work as either a right or left hand ring. This ring also had the same European shank as my e-ring, so if I put them together they would actually line up. As a right hand ring, it could function as the base for stacking anniversary rings, should my future husband ever want to buy me another ring!

The last ring was a simple plain white gold band. I’ve always loved the look of very plain rings. To me, a simple band as a wedding band symbolizes that you’ll be together no matter what, for better or worse, richer or poorer. I could probably wear this on my right or left hand (although I didn’t try it to see what it looked like with my e-ring).

So, I’m torn. I suppose I have a month or two to decide! Which ring would you pick? Do any of you plan to wear your engagement ring separate from your wedding ring?

I love the last one! I am also thinking that a plain white gold band is the way to go for me. I want something that will work perfectly with my e-ring, and nothing other than a plain band has made me feel that way! They are all lovely, though!

I plan to wear my e-ring w/my wedding band. We’re going back to the same jeweler that made my e-ring so we’re going to be designing one to go with my ering. we want both our wedding bands to have the same style. And they will be platinum bc it holds up better than white gold….
Personally I would go with the simple band with maybe one diamond in the center, inset.

I like the bottom ring - nice and clean look. I actually don’t care if my rings match. I will just stick to my wedding band… maybe I’ll wear my engagement ring on my right hand.

I had my heart set on a diamond band because I have always loved the way they looked, but my fiance fought me on it because he felt the diamond band took away for the simplicity of my solitaire and he wanted our bands to match, he felt that symbolized our relationship. I ended up with a plain platinum band from Tiffany, I didn’t get the knife-edge that matches the band of my e-ring, but got a 2mm Lucida, which is very similar to your last choice. I ended up finding that I was excited to do a plain band because it seems everyone does diamond bands now a days. I casually mentioned that I would love a diamond anniversary ring or a Yay! You’re having my baby! ring lol. I love the idea of wearing that on the right hand. The Tiffany Swing collection is so cool and asymmetrical. Sorry for the long post!

I actually don’t even wear my wedding band! I know — bad bride! But I like the way my e-ring looks alone. I wear my wedding band, alone, when I travel. My husband doesn’t mind, and I like the way it looks, so I don’t mind that it’s unconventional.

I’ve got to say– I love the plain band. I’ve been searching for my own band…and the ones with diamonds just aren’t “me.” Go with you’re heart and, of course, whatever looks best on your finger!!

What a neat idea! I also like the thin, plain band and what you had to say about it. You could wear it on either hand!

I considered getting a wedding band that would go separate from my e-ring in case I choose to just wear one, but we ended up choosing one that scoops down to accommodate the cushion cut center stone, so they’ve become a set.

I like the last one a lot. We are going for very plan bands. Like you, I like the symbolism of that sort of simplicity, and making it about the commitment and not the bling! Plus, continuing down that road of sentimentality, I really, really wanted us to have a matching set, so again, we’re going for something fairly neutral that will suit us both.

<Mine is a plain white gold pretty much like the last pic. I love it! It’s thin and doesn’t get in my way, but it’s definitely THERE! But then my e-ring also has a thin band so they sit well together.

“He went to Jared!” I HAD to do it. :) I’m glad they fixed your ring no problem. I vote the simple band–big fan. (2nd choice-the one that matches your e-ring.) We are wearing my dec’d parents’ bands (poor FI–my dad’s ring is a lil’ chach). I have a VERY non-traditional ring–it is from the T&Co Hearts collection (which I don’t think is around anymore. -Gosh, we’ve been engaged for a long time!). So, a band doesn’t fit beneath it. I will move my e-ring to my right hand & wear my mother’s VERY simple, VERY thin band on my left. I may also top it w/ her vintage e-ring, if my FI is all right with that. (I don’t want him to think his ring is 2nd fiddle cuz I LOVE it.)
Sorry-only pic I could find!

Glad you posted this - I was just thinking about if I should get a plain band or diamond accented. I’m thinking I’ll stick with the thin white gold band.

I actually got two thin rings simmilar to the first ring on your post (only split in half), and I have one row of diamonds above and one below my e-ring… On the big day, I just had FI put all three rings on at once, and them got them fused together after the big day… My e-ring is a striking princess cut that looked fab on it’s own, but every other option of wedding band made my ring look lopsided - so it was really the only way to go for us, and I LOVE IT!!! It’s a big decision, so good luck - but seriously go to the jewler and try it on the way mine is, you may love it too :)

When we went looking for wedding bands, I fell in love with a thin half-eternity band, which we bought on the spot. Then, 2 months before the wedding, I confessed to my husband that I couldn’t shake the image of a thin white gold super plain band (like the last one you showed). The result? I now wear both wedding bands with my e-ring all the time.

I’m partial to the plain ring too! My finance and I bought matching wedding bands: yellow gold with a thin milgrain edge. They’re very simple and I love them for all the reasons you like the idea of plain band :) I’ll probably wear my e-ring on my right hand, or maybe even not at all, depending on how much messy kid work I end up doing after I finish graduate school!

i like the second one! My e-ring is large and an heirloom so after i get my wedding band, i planned on just wearing a simple wedding band and not wearing my e-ring at all. i plan on only putting it on for special occasions.

I like 2 because you can have the option of having it on your left hand with your e ring. I also like 3 a lot too, a plain band is simple and meaningful. Hmm, tough choice, but I would probably get 2.
Good Luck either way your rings will be beautiful and meaningful!

I love them all!

I went with a plain band with a fine millgrain pattern on each side and I find it complements my solitaire really well. I do hope one day to have a stack of diamond bands as well - perhaps for a right hand ring.

My E-ring actually came in a set w/the wedding band, so I kind of cheated my way out of having to choose that! But I would choose the ring that’s the same series as yours, so you could wear it right hand/left hand/whatever and it would match and you’d love the style. :-)
