TinEye: Image Search Engine

March 29th, 2009 @ 10:19 am by Mrs. Bee

I just discovered a really cool image search engine called TinEye.  Here’s a description of the site:

TinEye is a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions. TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks.

It doesn’t have a huge database yet, but it’s great for searching for things like wedding dresses.  If you have the following picture of a wedding dress and don’t know the designer, upload the image or put in the url.

TinEye tells us that it’s a Priscilla of Boston dress!

Hopefully this search engine will improve over time because it’s one of the coolest things I’ve discovered on the web in recent memory!

Unfortunately they don’t seem to be that good yet…I put in five images and it only identified one. Two of them were wedding gown pictures from brides.com, so I really think it should have found them! However, it is early days, and if they can get their database bigger it will be awesome!

Agree, if they get the technology right and scale the business it will help us all be good Internet citizens.

hmmmm just fyi but I went to this website to look for something, and I got a virus warning right after it…. and then my anti-virus software kicked in… but it still screwed up my computer and i had to restore it to a few weeks back to make it work. I don’t know if it was attached to this website, but it was the only one I really had open…. so…. Just be careful.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?
