An Invitation For Us?

March 30th, 2009 @ 11:56 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Back in September we got an invitation in the mail. It wasn’t a huge surprise (I’d been asked to supply pictures for it!), but it was definitely a welcome one. Mr. Cowboy Boot’s parents decided to throw an engagement party for us. It was held on their five acres in Upstate New York in honor of our engagement in April 2008. It was also the (duh, Duh, DUH) meeting of the parents. Because Mr. CB and I had to drive around looking at venues for the first few days of our trip back East, Mom, Dad, and Brother CB arrived at FIL CBs’ house before we did! They had two days to get to know each other before we even made our entrance. I have to say, this was a pretty welcome thing on our part. We got to avoid the stressful event of trying to find common ground between everyone. Luckily, they did it on their own, and very naturally. Setting up the engagement party was a good icebreaker.

Future-In-Law Cowboy Boots

FMIL Cowboy Boot is the best cook in the world. Instead of getting the party catered by Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, New York, about an hour-and-a-half away, she decided to recreate their recipes. She made pulled pork, BBQ beans, chicken breasts, and cole slaw. Yum!

Me with Cowboy Boot-Bridesmaid AC and her sister

Because the engagement party was across the country from most of my friends and family, the majority of the guests were friends and family of FIL Cowboy Boots’. One of my bridesmaids drove up from New York City, where she lives, with her sister for the party. I’m so grateful. Do CB-Bridesmaid AC and I look like sisters? We’re always getting that!

The Centerpieces were done by FSIL Cowboy Boot. She happens to be a Home-Ec teacher.

The party gets started. Food and drink abound. That’s FSIL Cowboy Boot in the purple tank top. Mr. Cowboy Boot’s cousins are in the foreground–the girl with the black shirt and the guy with the striped button-down.

Papa Cowboy Boot gave a speech while Mama Cowboy Boot documented it with her camera.

Mr. Cowboy Boot made a speech too, and told a few too many raft-guide jokes. Yep, those exist.

The Future Cowboy Boots, and a beautiful cake made by a neighbor.

How did the meeting of your parents and your FI’s parents go?

awww that was so sweet!!!
Our parents actually met a few weeks ago in NYC (they came to us) and we threw a “engagement” dinner to break the ice. It went so well - phew! :-)

How fun! I have been to Dinosaur Barbeque twice while at college in upstate NY, and it’s the best barbeque I have ever had, so your FMIL sure did take on a huge task of recreating their recipes. Everything looks lovely.

That’s amazing you were able to see so much of his family (extended, too!) before the wedding! You didn’t say, though - are you guys starting to feel like family?

yay! you two are adorable. I can’t believe you were brave enough to leave your parents with the in-laws, without you there (I’d be so afraid of story-telling!)
what a fun party :-)

Our parents also did not meet until after our engagement. Mr. Taffy and I slaved all day in the kitchen (in August!) making dinner for them, and an hour and a half before they came over our neighborhood lost power! We had to go out to eat instead. We were sad to lose all of the food, but it was a good ice breaker!

Your engagement party looked awesome!

You set-up looks a lot like our one-year countdown party — which was also the first time our families (mine’s tiny, his is huge) did the meet and greet. That cake looks amazingly delish!

I have been wondering where in Upstate NY Mr. Cowboy Boot was from! I am from Rochester, but apparently it’s nowhere near here :)

Awww that’s so awesome that your FMIL did that. I have to be honest and say that I always get so jealous when I hear about in laws getting along great and are super happy for their kid’s wedding. When we got engaged, his parents didn’t even mention about meeting mine. And when my guy asked his parents about the idea they said it wasn’t a big deal…NOT A BIG DEAL????? I was really mad because my parents are super excited and was expecting to meet them really soon after the engagement. My parents ended up throwing an engagement party for us and the BP but my FILs did not come. 3 months later we finally (pretty much by force) got his family to come over to my house for dinner. It didn’t go horrible but let’s just say his parents left as SOON as the last piece of food was off their plate. We’ve pretty much given up on his parents being friendly.

But yes….your party looked AWESOME!! That’s definitley something I WILL do for my kids when they get engaged!! It’s such an awesome way to kick start the wedding festivities!!!!!
