Have You Been Threaded?

Have You Been Threaded? : wedding beauty Threadi image from here

Threading is an ancient Middle Eastern method of hair removal where a technician uses cotton thread (like something you would sew with), which is twisted and rolled over the hair. (I’ve only witnessed eyebrows and mustaches done, but I would imagine it would work most anywhere). As the thread rolls, it plucks the hair. Threading can remove an entire row of hair at one time (as opposed to tweezing, which pulls one hair at a time), resulting in a really straight line.

Every time I try something new I always ask, “Does it hurt?”

From my experiences, I would say that it’s less painful than waxing; but it’s a very different kind of feeling. It kind of feels like being snapped with elastic over and over again. But really, it’s not bad (and I have a super-low tolerance for pain). I usually go every three or four weeks and pluck any stray hairs that pop up in between, although they say it can last up to about six weeks. The cost is around $10.

The benefits of threading are that it’s quick, chemical-free, good for sensitive skin, and very sanitary.

If you have a place around you that does this and you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it for perfect bridal brows.

Do you have any atypical beauty solutions?

I’ve actually considered this, but I haven’t found a place that offers this service yet! Glad to hear it’s not too bad!

I totally love threading! I agree with the sensitive skin thing - I went and had my eyebrows waxed once and it took the entire top layer of my eyelid skin off! I was swollen shut for almost 2 hours! I will NEVER wax again! BTW - I have to say I’m lucky here in Houston. We can get threading for only $6 here!

I love threading. I used to get it done all the time in Manchester but I have yet to find a place in Seattle.

I used to thread all of the time when I lived in DC. Loved it!

I love threading. It took me a little while to get used to but I find that it tends to be more even than waxing and no more burnt skin!

I’ve always heard that hair that was removed by threading, grows back as if it were shaved. I’ve always stayed away from the process because of this. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure that the person who told me is a reliable source. So, Miss Gloss, is it true?

I always wanted to try threading but thought that it would hurt too much. I think I am going to try threading. I have a place right next to my apartment.

Threading removes hair from the root, just like waxing, it’s just more gentle….it grows back soft and thin, not blunt like if you shaved it. I’ve been getting my eyebrows threaded since high school (and am long overdue for it right now!).

ooo I want to try this so bad! I’m so awful at plucking my own eyebrows

it’s not like shaving…it plucks the hair out at the root, just like waxing or, well, plucking. :) it grows back just the same.

i love threading. as another gal with sensitive skin, i found that waxing caused some kind of allergic reaction (little angry white bumps, argh!) but after the initial “puff” from the threading, my eyes look smooth. another plus is that it gets all the teeny tiny hairs in between your eyebrows, so makeup powder doesn’t stick to them. and it’s super cheap!

Threading is also better to prevent wrinkles. The stress on skin induced by waxing can cause trauma to the delicate skin around the eyes and lips, leading to premature aging. I always thread. Much easier. Or pluck in extreme, emergency circumstances. :D I know a lady who gets her entire face threaded because she hates those little baby hairs. I wonder how she has the patience to endure that!!!

I always thread too! I love it and go about once a month or so, to get my eyebrows done. Once I started threading (about a year ago), I kept getting complimented on how prettily shaped my eyebrows were. The pain is fleeting, and it’s totally worth it!

I’ve never tried having my brows threaded, but oh man-I let a lady START to thread my upper lip. I had to stop them. YOWSA!

After a brow wax I am big on swiping the area with Oil of Olay toner for the next few days. It really helps prevent bumpage.

I always get my eyebrows threaded! It is super cheap here in Chicago (about $5!) compared to $15 waxing. However, I do find it more painful than waxing - but it lasts about 2 minutes. Well worth it! And the arches those girls create…perfect! I always get beautiful brows after threading.

I’ve done it. It works pretty good and is cheaper than waxing but I don’t think it lasts as long. Also at my threading place it was hard to get the same girl every time and some don’t trim hairs that are getting long but need to stay becausse of their location. My eyebrows are quite full.

Threads in DC is good. One on L Street and one on U Street.

I always recommend my friends to thread instead of wax any hair off their face. Like everyone else there are far more Pros than there is Cons. It doesn’t hurt, it’s just really uncomfortable. If you catch my drift…

I LOVE threading! I’ve been missing my eyebrow grooming in England!

@MissMelissaB: Threading means the hair’s being pulled from the root, so it’s actually more similar to waxing/plucking. Shaving actually doesn’t make the hair grow back thicker either, I believe. It seems that way b/c the end is cut bluntly. Check it out here: http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/hairgrow.asp

i get my eyebrows threaded. never did the wax so i don’t have much to compare it too. i’m starting to get used to the plucking sensation so it’s not as bad as i hyped it up to be the first time i got it done. there’s a place near my house that charges $10. excellent work for a great price.
