The Invites: A Work In Progress

March 30th, 2009 @ 9:26 am by Mrs. Gloss

I’ve been working on invitations as of late. I originally fell in love with the ’handwritten’ invite featured in the MS Weddings a few months back.

And then found this great suite at Mr. Boddington’s Studio:

The Invites: A Work In Progress : wedding diy invitations stationery Invite I have a few design options laid out, but as of right now, this one feels the most ’US’. All the navy ’handwriting’ will be embossed (since letterpress is not in our budget), and the edges of the pieces will be a bright yellow. This invite was inspired by a combination of elements from ChereeBerry and Linda & Harriett.

What do you guys think? Too informal? According to our etiquette adviser, Ms. Emily Post, a handwritten invite is the most formal of all invitations. Do you think this form of handwriting applies?

So fun! My only concern is that your RSVP date is on the BACK of the response card…

Overall, though, I love them! And geez, I need to get my own invites in gear. (For some reason, that’s been the area I’m having trouble getting motivated to complete — I think because I’m intimidated by them!)

Wow, these are amazing. I really love the informal feel but the personal characteristics of these. I just might steal your idea of extending the design to the backside! Great idea.

I really love the handwritten portion. Especially how your names swirl into the next page to form a heart. Love the two become one ideas. :)

Cute– where did you find the mad lib portion? Or did you put your creativity hat on and make that up yourself? =)

I love them too, but like Miss Bruschetta, I worry that with the RSVP date on the back on the card, some people might not see that and not respond in time. I love the color combo of navy and yellow- it’ll really “pop” off the cards.

OMG I am in LOVE with these! I too was concerned with the RSVP date being on the back when I first saw them but other than that, too cute!

Also, sorry to be a nag, but I wouldn’t want this to go unnoticed on the final version- “courtesy” is misspelled on the final card!

I’m a little concerned about the RSVP date being on the back of the card too - I think at least a handful of your guests wouldn’t think to turn it over. Maybe put that on a second line on the front page and extend the end line out into a squiggle like the insert above it? I also wish the “information” insert had something extend to the back - it seems sad that it’s the only card that doesn’t follow this design aspect.

I love them! They are so cute, my favorite part is how the design extends to the back!

Thanks for the comments about the ‘hidden’ RSVP date – our guest list is primarily family and I pretty much already know who is coming (and who isn’t), so at this point I’m basically creating them so we can get mail! Also, I thought about inserting them backwards – so when you get the invitation you see the backside first and therefore cannot ignore the date. Do you think this is still too subtle?
@JLS – I’m using really thick paper (right now I have my eyes set on Crane’s Lettra Letterpress 220lb. Duplex Sheets) so the edges of the paper are about coaster thickness. And I was going to go into a whole explanation of color edges, but I remembered Bella Figura had done a post about them recently on WB Pro and here is the link: http://www.weddingbeepro.com/2009/03/12/wedding-invitation-trends-for-2009-edge-painting/
@Taylor – I agree with the sadness of the information card, now that I’m looking at it up on the screen it definitely needs something!! Any suggestions?
@BA – Thanks! I’m terrible at spelling.

I love it! I think the invites are so cute, and very formal. I think the embossing will be a great touch and really add texture and ooomf (thats the technical term! ;)) to your invite.
One quick thought– having the reply by date on the back of the response card makes it seem like the reply by date isn’t that important. If you have plenty of time between your reply by date & your wedding, then no worries, but if you only have a few weeks and you really need your final numbers in, you might want to consider putting it on the front (and maybe both loops go into a heart on the back, like the one with your names). Just a thought– overall I LOVE THEM!

I love these! And I love the thought of the yellow edges. Maybe for the information card you could repeat the heard from the invite….just a thought.

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Tutorial please! I’d love to know how you created the handwriting - did you write it and scan, or use a font and then add the lines?

I think they’re outrageously adorable! Such a great idea. I love them. And I’m about to make one of those just-keep-your-mouth-shut comments, but technically it should be “reception immediately to follow” rather than “to immediately follow.” I know, I know — shut UP, grammar freak! Sorry!! But I literally couldn’t make myself refrain from typing it. I think I have a problem!

I love it! It’s elegant whimsey–which makes it sophisticated without being too labored. and of course, it’s soooooooo original! again, love it!
