And They Are Off…

March 31st, 2009 @ 5:16 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

Our invitations, that is!!

I just got back from the post office. I asked if I could hand cancel the envelopes and the woman looked at me like I was a bit crazy. She said the machine would do that, so I just decided to hand them over.

Here’s a sneak peek of all the invites stacked up:

And They Are Off... : wedding invitations Invite1

While our invites weighed less than an ounce, they were square, so they cost more in postage.

But I thought the stamp was pretty cute:

And I got to use my favorite stamp on the return address cards:

And They Are Off... : wedding invitations Stamp11

Overall, I was in and out in less than FIVE minutes. It was so short and sweet. Now I feel nervous, as Mr. Peep and I are the only ones who have seen the finished product. I hope they are a hit!

More on the invites to come in a few days!! Gotta make sure my peeps get them first!

Well, personally I think anyone who even thinks of the phrase ‘hand cancel’ IS crazy, but that’s just me :)

But yay on getting the invitations sent off! Now comes the fun of waiting for the responses!

I went to the Post Office today to weigh our invites before we order postage, and I was in line for almost a half an hour!!! I know, I could weigh it in the lobby, but I wasn’t sure about size guidelines and wanted to get approval from the people behind the counter. ;)

Congrats on getting the invites out! :)

Nice stamps! I used the fins & chrome car collection for mine. I can’t wait to see the invitations themselves!

That’s rude that she wouldn’t let you hand cancel!

I really like the dragonfly stamp! I didn’t see that one when I was perusing the USPS online. And that’s funny about the hand cancelling. The lady at my post office said she didn’t do hand cancelling, either, and when I asked her what post offices did, she told me that none did. I knew this wasn’t the case but didn’t push the issue. Then, out of nowhere, she asked me to give her my big bag of invites and told me she’d hand cancel them later! I kind of took a leap of faith, but she really did hand cancel them for me and friends/fam received them within 1-2 days. I heart the USPS!

Grrr.. the post office. The machine stamped mine, alright. The biggest 4.5×2 inch postmark I have ever seen in my life!

You don’t have ‘large envelopes’, though. You should be fine.

My post office told me it was illegal for them to allow me to hand cancel– because basically the postage stamp shows that the piece has been “inspected” by a postal worker (um, or a postal machine, I guess…..). When I told her that my co-worker had hand-canceled her invites just a few months prior, she was very quick and very animated in telling me that she would fire any of her workers if they ever allowed that. But she did promise to take my invites from me and have someone in the back on “light-duty” (no lifting, I guess?) hand cancel them for me. So this person came up front and kindly and gently took my invites from me, and even threw a “congratulations” over her shoulder. And low & behold, she did hand cancel them.
I must also give the USPS props because my envelopes were dark brown, and instead of putting that white strip with the bar code on the front, they were SO INCREDIBLY KIND and put it on the back. So my invites showed up looking wonderful and pristine at my guests’ doors!

PS- I used the same stamp– mine were normal sized, but had a bump in them from a bow, so I was told that they couldn’t go through the little slot.

What does hand-cancel mean? I am months away from having to send out my invites so this is all new to me :) I just learned today that square invites cost more for postage (boo!!) I also heard that USPS has requirements for minimum size RSVP? Has anyone heard of this?!

hmm from what i noticed, the invites seem to have been run through some sort of machine anyway (for the barcode?) even if they’re hand canceled.

anyone can verify?
