DW in the DR: Cake Wreck

March 31st, 2009 @ 4:20 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

The dinner game hijinks were a hoot and we were still on a high from them when someone motioned to us that it was time for cake. Yippee! We both LOVE cake!

If you will remember, when we met with the wedding coordinator upon our arrival at the resort, I was well prepared and not only handed her these two photos, but also some purple ribbon as well, which I’d bought back home.

Knowing that things at destination weddings don’t always turn out exactly as you imagine them, I didn’t expect our cake to look exactly like those photos.

1

However… well… have you ever been to that site Cake Wrecks? It’s a self-described “gallery of deformed, distasteful and bizarrely decorated wedding and birthday cakes”.

I think we may have something to submit.

DUN DUN DUN…

2

Can you truly appreciate the horror? No? Check out those first two photos again and then come back to this:

3

Uh… GROOVY?

I won’t even waste my energy having a fit over the absence of flowers on the top (again with the flower fiascos?) because let’s face it, folks - even if they were dancing around on top and singing Viva La Vida Loca, no wreath of flowers could have saved this cake.

Once I got over my initial horror though, this became just another hilarious DW mishap. So once again, ON WITH THE SHOW!

Our guests gathered around to witness the massacre of the cake.

4

One of our awesome servers offered to hold my train for the momentous occasion and paused to give us a thumbs-up. (I love this photo - seriously, how funny is that?!)

5

Here we go! Smile and pose for Photophil!

6

Behold: the (what’s supposed to be epic) cake cutting close-up! (Snort, snort.)

7

Mr Breezy goes in for the kill, and ooooh, what’s gonna happen next? As you can see, random lady at the next-door table is also eager to find out. Hmm… she looks downright petrified.

8

9

Chill out, random lady! Mr Breezy is a perfect gentleman. Aw… see? Ain’t he sweet?

10

Uh, wait a second… hey… wha-… wait… what’re you…

11

… oh no he di-in’t?!?

12

CAKE SMASHHHHHH!!!

13

GAHHHHH!!!

For the record, I once told Mr Breezy that if he ever pulled this kind of trick on me on my wedding day, I’d divorce him on the spot.

He claims it wasn’t valid because I said it more than 6 months in advance and his memory doesn’t go back further than that. Can you believe that caca?

14

Hey Mr Breezy… SURPRISE! Your wife can dish it too. TAKE THAT.

15

16

Mr Breezy: “That just confirms I married the right girl.”

17

18

OK OK, so I made fun of how the cake looked but I will gladly admit that in this case, looks were deceiving - it was absolutely delicious!

Which is really all the guests cared about… especially Mr Breezy and Mr G.

19

It was a wonderfully funny (and scrumptious!) wedding dinner and the service was amazing. Honestly, I still can’t believe we only had two servers for sixty guests… the servers at the Majestic Colonial are super fantastic and I’m very grateful for them.

20

That said, we were running a bit behind schedule. Not that our “wedding coordinator” was anywhere in sight to tell us that though. *Sigh*

It was time to high-tail it to the disco and let loose (even more, if you can believe!).

Amazingly, Photophil Steingard and Michael Steingard did not get any cake on their camera lenses during the documentation of this cake wreck.

Wow, that’s some pretty impressive cake board decorating. I think the thatching just adds that special touch, hey?

I’m glad it was tasty, or that would have been doubly disappointing.

Love it! CakeWrecks has instilled a deep love of terrible cakes within me! Make sure to check out the Inspiration vs. Perspiration entry, just for persepective. It could have been a lot worse!

Mr.Hudson told me the same thing-that if I smashed the cake in his face he was divorcing me on the spot. We actually have a picture of when he changed his mind. He looks so mischievous! Needless to say, I won. He had cake EVERYWHERE. *evil laugh*

The ribbon was supposed to *accent* the cake, not cover it! And what’s up with the swirls? Was the decorator already into the rum?? I love that you have a sense of humor about it! And if it was delicious, I’m sure no one else noticed!

I think it was the WEDDING COORDINATOR who got into the rum…but your pics are adorable Mrs. Breezy. Your pics were AWESOME..so what if the cake had wings and crazy dee-zines on it? You could SMUSH it and have fun with it and got great pics courtesy of the wedding planner, Ms. Bacardi (lol) ..at least it looked like it was delicious.

It could have always turned out like this:

@furelysse: Haha, I know! It wouldn’t be half as crazy looking if it weren’t for those wings, right?

@CCR: We didn’t try to eat the wings, no. I think they were actually just icing drawn onto the platform..?

@mrshudson: That’s great. Even though I dreaded being smashed with cake, it turned out to be so much fun, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

@bellenga: Too true. Ouch.

@AliCherri1: Caketastrophy! Brilliant!

I just procrastinated on going to the gym by reading all of your recaps - you are SO gorgeous and the two of you make a beautiful couple. Your wedding seems like a blast - and definitely has a number of elements I want to copy. Your friend/officiant was hilarious. I know it was a few months ago, but congrats!

Great post! Thanks for the tip on the Cake Wrecks website. We have one to submit too! I burst out laughing when we saw ours. It was ironic because I thought no flowers because the cake would “speak for itself”. And boy it did!

Wait, that reminds me of what happened during my last birthday party where I encountered 2 surprises: the party, and the cake smashing on my face.

Cake is so much fun. :)
