The Dress Hunt (Part 1 of 4)

March 31st, 2009 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Dress hunting, for me, was rather challenging. Santa Fe has a limited selection of bridal stores (basically just David’s Bridal and a few dressmakers). Because I grew up in LA and love boutiques, I craved something similar for trying on dresses—and I wanted my best friends there as naysayers should the dress I like be completely hideous. So, I had to base my dress hunting around trips home (to LA), or to any major city, for that matter. Albuquerque, an hour away, didn’t suffice here, either.

(Lily Saratoga)

So, when Mr. CB and I went back East last September to go venue hunting and to celebrate our engagement with our families, I convinced him to make a stop in a ritzy little town called Saratoga Springs, NY. I’d done a little research beforehand and, while I would be by myself at the store, I figured it would be a good first try (with my camera in tow).

Mr. Cowboy Boot—-STOP READING NOW!

I had tried to plan it so FSIL Cowboy Boot could come along (she’s one of my bridesmaids), but the store was closed on the only day she was free. So alas, there I was, by myself, at Lily Saratoga. My budge was $1200 (mere by wedding dress standards as I would soon find out), and yes, I let myself try on dresses well over that. Just to get a feel. Yep.

(I apologize in advance hive, as I did not write down any dress names or prices. But, the brands that this store carries are: Jim Hjelm, Justin Alexander, Matthew Christopher, Essence of Australia, Nicole Miller, Priscilla of Boston, Vineyard Collection, and Renella de Fina).

Dress #1:

I liked the clean lines of this dress. It’s preppy–not quite what I’m going for–but this was my first time trying on dresses, so I figured I’d stay open-minded and try on anything that spoke to me.

Dress #2:

I loved the waist and the back of this dress, but it was a bit too full of a skirt for a petite girl like me. It was swallowing my 5’2″ self up. Also, the color was really beautiful. This was blush satin.

Dress #3:

We were getting closer, but the flower on the hip felt trendy and cheap (albeit, removable). And the dress wasn’t unique enough for me.

Dress #4:

I loved this one. The satin underneath the lace was champagne. I loved the long satin bow down the back, but it was almost too much lace.

Dress #5:

I loved the back, the front, and the color of this. But I almost felt like I was showing too much skin for a wedding day. This was definitely one of my faves.

Dress #6:

This one is by Nicole Miller. It was my favorite of the day. I loved the unique fabric. The fit was fantastic for lil’ me. But I couldn’t wrap myself around the color. The dress was made of metallic taffeta, so it had kind of a silvery tint to it.

Which is your favorite dress I tried on that day? Did you find your dress on the first try?

#4 & 5 are my favorites (like #3 maybe with a brooch instead of the flower)…but you could wear any of them because you look so great in them all!

#2 and #6 (although I think it’s a lot of lace) but you look really good in the sweatheart necklines

Dress #5 & 4. I LOVE lace with a simple sash and the simple V neck with a sash. I love sash period. I saw you had a lot of pins on your back, what were their average sizes? I hate that part about dress shopping. All the sizes are so huge on me.
Jim Hjelm has a dress very similar to #5 but with less back showing. :) I lub Jim Hjelm.

Saratoga Springs is near my wedding venue!!!

Dress shopping in my area SUCKS too. Sigh.

I’m totally biased but I love #2! (It might look a lot like mine LOL)
But on a petite frame a full skirt doesn’t proportion correctly. Petites look best in a sheath, mermaid, or penciled skirt.
I thought #4 did you proud!! The girls look GREAT and that ribbon really accentuates your waist!

Ooh, ooh, I JUST bought #6 myself on Saturday. And I got it in Ivory! Nicole is no longer producing the antique white color (AKA champagne), so if you love it, see if they can get it for you in ivory instead.

I’m going with 3 and 5 as the top picks! And for three, if you can remove the flower, you can go without or find something else to customize it if you want.

Whatever you end up with, it looks like you tried on some great ones!

That lacy one is definitely my favorite on you. Seriously though, when you find “the one” it will just speak to you. I don’t care what anyone else says. When I tried on my dress, I just tried it on for the fun of it, and I just burst out laughing when I saw myself in it because I LOVED how it looked on me.

Just keep looking until something just hits you. :-)

My fav of these is definitely #5! The back is killer!!!
I found my dress at the second shop I went to and it was the first one I tried on that day. I’m so thrilled to have the dress shopping over with! It stressed me out a bit too much!

I love the dress #3 on you. You have VERY nice body and you should not go with very puffy full dress. I liked the dress#1 and the 4 for the same reason it shows your lovely body. and will be easier to move around. For the #3 I love the lace on you and your waist looks tiny. it is also very elegant! I love the back of the dres#2 but only the back! I am sure it is same affect the back of #3. can you put more pics of #3?

I like 4 and 5 - except the lacy one cinches your waist a bit too much…at least, it looks like it does. I don’t like the colour of the last one at all - it comes out looking a bit grubby in the pictures.

I liked #2 and the last the best. It is wonderful that you tried on all sorts of different dresses because I found that what I thought I wanted or would look good on me did not look good at all.

One tip since I see that you are short that was the best tip I was given. Make sure that you fold the dress under in the front at some point to see what you would really look like at 5′ 2″. Being short myself I found that in certain dresses I looked wonderful until I saw where my actual feet would be and then once I folded it under I looked like a dwarf because the waist line was so low. I hope this makes sense…just do it and you will see. Good luck!

I’m originally from Saratoga Springs so when i was home visiting the parents for christmas this year i went with my mom and sister wedding dress shopping. Saratoga has several amazing wedding shops. I actually ended up getting mine at Lilys of Saratoga….not the Nicole Miller you tried on but another. I love that shop! My dress budget was only 600$ and the owner bent over backwards to help me find the perfect dress in that range.

#4 is my pick, and I’m not particularly a lace fan. #5 would be my second pick, but honestly your body is in tip top shape so I’m sure you could ‘own’ any dress!!! Any pick will be fab, pick the one that makes you feel prettiest!!!

@Gerbera: Average size is usually 10, right? It makes sense. Most-size girls have to be able to try the dress on. But, it does make it difficult when you happen to be at the bottom of the size scale.

i have to say i like the last dress the best too. i tried that dress on as well and i thought it was very comfortable and flattering. the texture is very nice and i think it photographs a lot more luxuriously than it costs. i agree the color is a little unconventional, but i think it could be beautiful with dramatic makeup and some nice jewelry. i’m not a fan of 1, 2, or 5. you have a great figure and those dresses don’t show that off as well. 3 and 4 look very nice on you, but they look like dresses that everyone else gets. i love that you’re open to more of the unique styles and i totally want to encourage you to keep looking!
