Register! Again?

March 31st, 2009 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Joey

I know this has been a popular blog topic, but registering for gifts has been consuming us. Late last year we decided that we would register at Amazon.com and Macy’s. Amazon offers free shipping on most orders over $25, and there’s such a great variety of things available through them. Macy’s offered the 5% cash back on purchases made off our registry, and it was a nice nationwide chain that most guests had access to. It seemed easy enough.

Ah, and then it happened. I checked our Macy’s registry and found that the prices were completely different than when we had registered. Some things were more because we registered during a sale, and some things were less, but a lot of things were gone. We purposely selected towels that we were told they would always carry, but they were gone. The luggage was gone. All our bed linens were gone, and so was some of the barware we selected.

With much protest, I dragged Mr. Joey back into Macy’s to replace the disappeared stock, only to find it all disappear a few weeks later. Mr. Joey isn’t a shopper, and I knew that I might get only one more registering outing out of him before the wedding. So, it was time to strategize. I asked around about which store people liked to register at, and which stores people found it easy to buy off registries. I scouted a few places with a friend one weekend. We played with the registry machines and looked at selection. I decided on Crate and Barrel. They had pieces that were simple and more our style, and I know that the basics we registered for will be around until at least the wedding.

Perfect. All I had to do was get Mr. Joey into the store. Of course, it wasn’t going to be that simple. Turns out the same day I decided on Crate and Barrel was the same day we started moving on building a house.

So what does this have to do with registering? Well, before when we thought about registering, the only items I was concerned about lasting a long time were the dinner and glassware. I knew my tastes and living space would change in the future, but I also thought that we’d probably be in the same apartment for the next few years. Now that’s all out the door. If everything sticks to schedule, we’ll be moving into our new place by the end of summer, a few weeks after the wedding.

How am I supposed to register for a house that isn’t even built? I don’t have the mental capacity right now to think about room color schemes when it comes to the house. I’m still trying to decide how many rooms there will be, the layout of the kitchen, and whether I want gas or electric. Deciding on the colors of sheets, towels, and picture frames isn’t going to happen. But what does that mean for our registry? Well, right now it means it’s pretty bare. We are registered for sheet sets in a few basic colors (ivory and mocha) and a couple sets of towels in a green, but that’s it. There are no blankets, no shower curtains, no duvet sets. I thought about just ordering styles that I like now and then returning them later, but it seems like too much of a hassle, especially with Amazon. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to register for stuff I might not like or use, but I want to make sure we have enough for people to choose from.

Anyone have the same problem trying to register for stuff that may not match your home in the immediate future? What solution did you come up with?

ooh, Miss Joey!

We had so much trouble with our Macy’s registry as well. We kept losing items from the registry and had to register for replacements. I got so frustrated, but was just too lazy to try another store when we have the majority of gifts registered at BB&B. (now it’s too late with my shower next week!)

Make sure you send Macy’s corporate a letter to complain. We got a $25 gift card in the mail. Which doesn’t replace all the hassle of the registry, but we were able to buy a couple of the things that were going to be discontinued, on sale with the gift card!

I only registered for china and small appliances. I know we’ll be moving in the next 6 months and dont want sheets and towels in all beige. Plus, I am hoping people will give us cash…just have your mom spread the idea of a cash gift (tactfully) when people ask her where you are registered.

I would be careful with leaving your registry too bare. People want to buy you things and if you don’t give them direction you are going to end up with things you don’t want and might not be able to return.

Just pick neutrals for now. You can return later if you decide you don’t want certain things.

We had to create our registries before we moved into our house. Luckily, we did know the floor plan, but we didn’t know what we wanted for the colors. We put sheets and towels in nuetrals on ths registry.

We also included appliances. We had old ones as we lived together before the house, but we figured we’d get new ones too. We settled on black appliances.

We also did fun items such as board games and cornhole from Target.

Our registries are pretty bare because we’re still figuring out what we want to fill our new house with, but we’ve also told my mom if anyone asks we’d like money to go towards our honeymoon and new home. Some people said they wanted us to have something to open so my mom suggested purchasing a small item from the registry and then giving the remainder in a check.

Our first shower is in 2 weeks - we’ll see how it goes!

We had trouble too! Within a week of registering, with no sales or anything on, the prices randomly changed in our registry. I’m happy we caught it because while most of the price changes were not super significant, the price of the Dutch over we registered for went up by over $100! Who does that? Dealing with these companies can be a total pain, but I hope that your latest arrangement works out for you.

I would recommend registering at stores that have very generous return policies. Bed Bath and Beyond you can return stuff for cash or giftcard. There will always be some people who want to buy you something tangible (versus a giftcard or cash) and those people will either buy off of a registry or pick something out themselves. I ended up putting a number of more inexpensive items on the registry and then did one large return after the wedding. You could also have your mom and bridesmaids spread the word that you would prefer giftcards or cash instead of gifts.

I would definitely register with BB&B instead since they have a very generous return policy. The items are plentiful and not discontinued easily. You can always exchange or return items and I have a couple of friends who were registered here as well. Good luck!

That’s a pain! Are you guys building the house yourself or getting contractors to do it? Either way, you should definitely register at Home Depot or something fixer-upper oriented. Your soon-to-be-hubby will probably enjoy it more and you don’t have to worry about little things. And express that you prefer gift cards on your website so then you can pick stuff out when you move in.

We’re having the same problem right now as we’re looking to buy a new place in the near future and I have no clue what we’ll be needing there. So right now we’re registered at Crate & Barrel for a bunch of random things which as I receive, I’ve been going to the store and returning for gift cards. No one is the wiser and this way when we move into our new place and I have a better decorating scheme, we’ll be able to buy everything new to match! Its a little unorthodox but it works for us and we’re still getting value from everyone’s gifts.

We’re still on the fence about registering because we already live together and have almost everything we need.
Side note- go with the gas stove. We have electric and it is MISERABLE (uneven heat and the burners get disgusting). Also, make sure to have lots of windows in your kitchen layout. We only have one tiny one by the table and it seems very closed in.

We registered at Target, BB&B, and Lowe’s to get a wide variety of gifts. We originally registered at Target because it is great place for people who are on a budget, but still want to get us things.

However, the same things happened to us there as happened to you at Macy’s. I have completely updated our registry about three times now because they keep discontinuing everything. Also, I tried to return something at Target a few weeks ago, and they were very difficult to work with. BB&B has only run out of our dishes so far. However, they can still be purchased and mailed to us, and the person who purchases them gives us a card from BB&B stating what was purchased to give us something to open.

I’m not sure if Home Depot has a registry, but our Lowe’s registry is great! We decided to register mostly for fans and light fixtures. I’m like you and have no idea what type of fixtures I want to go with (brushed nickel, etc.), so I just went with one style. If I decide that it won’t work, I’ll just make returns; but the most important thing is to have plenty on your registry or people will buy random crap for you b/c many people don’t like to give $$ or giftcards!

I had the SAME problem, so I registered for BB&B gift cards! I told my mom to spread the word as to WHY we registered for gift cards, so people understand that I just don’t know what we’ll need. So far a lot of people have said it made it so much easier since they could just choose an amount and do the cards. Maybe that? Also BB&B has an amazing in store return policy, so if someone bought you something that didn’t match you can return or exchange it, no hassles. Totally worth it to register at BB&B!

@Habibi: We’re slowly filling the registry up with things we know will need replacing soon — mostly in the kitchen.
@MoSnow: We thought about Home Depot but online registries aren’t accessible in the store. Plus, since my Dad is the contractor, he gets special discount on everything. I didn’t want people to pay more for items when I know I can get them cheaper.
@shopaholic: see above. Also, lucky for us my aunts and uncles will give us cash and gift cards. That’s how they roll. It’s everyone else I need to provide options for :)

We had the same issue — we’re moving right before the wedding and have very little idea of what we’ll need in the new apartment. I wanted to keep the registry tiny and spread the word via our parents that cash and gift cards would be most appreciated, but my FMIL was very uncomfortable with that — giving cash gifts is Simply Not Done in their circle. So we registered for some lovely stoneware at a local specialty dish store, and the store will ship it all for free to wherever we end up! I think it will work out well.

Macy’s also has two different sets of prices. One for in the store and one on the website. The other problem is using special promotion codes don’t usually work on their wedding website.

We mostly registered for appliances and cooking tools. I did register some kitchen towels, and our bedsheet. I didn’t know what the room would be like that they’re in BUT I decided I’ll just decorate and base the room around the kitchen towels and bedsheets.

@Cacey: We are so going with gas. I love our gas stove now and can’t imagine cooking on anything else.

I am really worried about registering. We live on a ship and really whatever we get will end up in boxes in storage! We will most likely not register for any linens or decorative items. Mostly basics and boring stuff. Boo.
But, we need that stuff and the rest can come later!

I was planning on registering at Macy’s as well, your experience makes me nervous!

We’re having the same problem because we are completely remodeling all the rooms in my fiance’s house, and at this point, we only know the color scheme’s we’re doing in a few of them. This is why I stalk my registry and change my mind like 100 times a day. He could care less and says we’ll just return/exchange stuff if we change our minds. In the end, we registered for neutral towels, neutral sheets, no comforters even though that would be great (no idea what we want!) and mostly housewares like dishes, electrics, etc. We also kept in mind that we have a LOT of walls to decorate, so we just picked out some of the stuff at Crate and Barrel like mirrors, sconces, etc. Good luck- it’s fun!!

I am on my registries almost daily changing what I registered for. I registered at Crate and Barrel and Macys, and I am having problems of depleted inventory at both stores.
BBandB definitely has the most liberal return policy and carries many things that are also availble at Macy’s. My problem is I don’t know where we will live so def tough when picking colors. But I just chose china, dinnerware, appliances and bedding. Honestly you are probably going to have more than one sheet and towel set, so just register for some and you can always get more later!
And one last thing, stop worrying so much, guests will bring cash if it gets too complicated!
