When you think of summer, what colors come to mind?
Yellows, definitely. Light blues, pinks, whites, sure. But black?
Yes! With the appropriate style, black offers a dark canvas — perfect for making summer florals go POP! And, with the right design and fabric, even a knee-length style becomes formal.
See? Dresses from the Jim Hjelm line (and family) were my original inspiration.

Hello, hive! I need some creative suggestions, pretty please.
We’ll be placing a handwritten note of appreciation at each guest’s seat. Since I didn’t hand-write our invitations as I’d once imagined, I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to express how much I (ahem, “we”) love and appreciate each person in our lives. The letter writing I can handle (I’m a well-practiced letter writer), but I need some help deciding how to jazz up the plain white envelopes.
I considered putting our monogram on the outside, but that seemed a little, I don’t know, narcissistic. I mean, if I write a thank you note to a friend, I don’t put my initials on the outside. I could just write their names nicely, but that’s a little boring.
Will you help me choose?
A: the guest’s monogram or initial

Miss Joey has a couple items for sale!
~~~
I’m selling this beautiful flower hair piece with matching boutonniere. It’s custom made and has never been used. I love it but the more I look at it, the more I know it doesn’t go with the style of my dress.
I’m selling the set for $48 plus the cost of shipping. This would be perfect for a tropical, beach or outdoor wedding. Please contact Ms. Joey if you’re interested.
Have a wedding item for sale? Post it with pictures in the Weddingbee classifieds and you might see it featured on the blog!
Our wedding guests will be receiving a little note from us this week reminding them to save the date! I’m going to keep them a surprise until most people have received them, but here is a sneak peek of what they’ll find in their mailboxes…
I recently went shopping with my two Maids of Honor for bridesmaid dresses. I wanted to find dresses that were cute and flattering, and something that the girls woudl be able to wear again. I wasn’t looking for a standard looking bridesmaid dress. Most importantly, the dress had to be affordable. My first choice was a cornflower blue dress, or a gray dress if we couldn’t find something in blue. Because I feel like “bridesmaid” dresses are often expensive because they are made for bridesmaids, we decided to start our search in the mall. We found a few dresses that either were the wrong shade of blue, were too expensive, had lots of beading, or just weren’t very cute on.
Heading to store after store began to get tiring, but we finally made our way into Banana Republic. We found a gray dress that looked kind of interesting on the hanger and decided to give it a try. As soon as I saw it on both MOHs, we all loved it. The dress looked beautiful on both of them!
The dress was $150, which was within our goal of being under $200. We didn’t purchase the dresses right then and there because Banana Republic often has sales, so I was going to go home and check my membership information to see if there was an upcoming sale. Sure enough, I found out that this last weekend was friends and family weekend, which made everything 30% off. And with my membership I got an additional 10% off, making the dresses 40% off, and under $100!! Woo hoo!
Since the “madness” will soon be upon us, I thought I’d share with everyone a few of the Joey traditions. Our first tradition has of course to do with the NCAA men’s tournament. Every year we put together a bracket, invite our friends to play with us, and always, ALWAYS watch the final game together. If we’re not in the same city, we still both watch and text or IM back and forth. I don’t know how or why it is a tradition, but it is. I look forward to putting together my bracket picks every year. Go Huskies!! (Sorry Pengy, I know you’re a Bruin.)
Our next tradition is the Annual Joey End of the Summer Bash. Since Mr. Joey is a teacher, we always end the summer with a party. We supply a half keg and mixers, and friends bring whatever else they want to drink. Sometimes we open up the grill so guest can BYO BBQ. It’s a great time. It’s not stressful at all, and cheap to throw. Summers are crazy and we always feel like we miss out on seeing everyone. I can’t wait to have our End of Summer Bash also be our housewarming party this summer. Our house building is right on schedule!
Our yummiest tradition has to be Thanksgiving. Every year we prepare a themed Thanksgiving meal. The first year we made all the traditional dishes, the second year we had Chesapeake inspired dishes (Virginia spoon bread, Old Bay Turkey), the third year we did Hawaiian food (Kalua turkey, spam fried rice), and last year we had New Orleans on the table. Hawaiian was the easiest and the tastiest, but they were all really great. This year we’re thinking Chinese or New Mexican. Thanksgiving is my favorite of “our” traditions.
No, this post isn’t about kittens. But aren’t they the cutest?!
As our wedding gets closer, one MAJOR detail of our big day is driving me crazy. Should we do a “first look”, or wait until the ceremony to see each other? Although I’m not one to rigidly stick to longstanding wedding traditions (bye-bye garter toss!), I have always imagined that on my wedding day, my hubby-to-be would see me for the first time as I was walking down the aisle. I’ll admit it–this is all based on the fact that I want Mr. K to tear up (which I’ve only seen happen once—when he proposed)! I just want that point where he sees me walking down the aisle to be a huge, breathtaking moment for both of us. And if we spend all day taking pictures before the ceremony, I just don’t see that happening.
Hive, again, I need your help. I was taking some pictures last week (for Weddingbee, no less) and I dropped my camera (okay, maybe more than once). All of a sudden my pictures went from this:*
For some, a proposal is completely planned out. I once knew a guy who picked up his girlfriend in a limo, drove her to a helicopter pad, flew her to Catalina Island (a small plot of land about two hours off the coast of Southern California by boat) at sunset, and led her to a rose petal-covered hotel room overlooking the ocean.
Mr Cowboy Boot’s proposal was nothing like that.
But, before I whine and moan about not getting a chocolate-covered smorgasbord of perfectly timed bells and whistles, here are some clues into why the sporadic proposal was a-okay.
The view from our hotel room
Mr. Gloss and I looked EVERYWHERE (three different states, although Maine was our primary search location) to find that perfect/affordable venue. And we finally found one after about five months of searching, which seems like forever in the wedding world! We looked at lots of places, and researched way more, that had ‘Reception Packages’ and traditionally held/hosted Weddings. But, apparently I like to make things way more difficult than they need to be, as we elected to choose none of them.
One day, Mama Gloss and I tossed around an idea for a venue, and we chalked it up as something fantastical that would probably never happen. But we indulged ourselves anyways. There is a 100-year-old steamship that runs somewhat near the town where I grew up. There are regularly scheduled 3 or 5 hour tours, BUT it turns out you can also rent out the boat for private events. It costs $1500 for the first two hours, and something like $250 for each hour after that (which seemed pretty reasonable when compared to the rental charges of the other places that we were considering).
The benefits:
Mr. Bruschetta and I agreed we would prefer to have a friend cantor our ceremony. (The alternative would be selecting the church-designated male or female singer.) We even had the perfect person in mind: Gianmarc (or simply, G), who is married to my bridesmaid Kris. Music is so integral to G’s life; we knew asking him to sing during our nuptial mass would be a perfect fit.
Mr. Bruschetta and G, from one of our first double dates several years ago.
With permission from the church music director to use an “outside” cantor, I brainstormed a way to connect food and music in a neat little package. Although I’d never baked them, I was intrigued by black and white cookies (great minds bake alike, right Miss Stiletto?); something about them even reminds me of music notes.
I have gotten a lot of questions about our tent logistics. Hopefully these answers will be helpful to some of you! Having a “tent wedding” is a huge pain in the arse and I’d like to help anyone else trying to do it in any way I can!
Q: How many guests did you have under your tent? How was space under the tent?
I gained 3 pounds the past couple of weeks. Combine family birthdays (mine included) with less time to exercise since I’m working on getting my little labors of love out to the post office this week, and it’s been bad. I feel sluggish, gross, and like I fell off the horse.
My gosh, I really didn’t expect such awesome feedback from everyone about our signing board!!
Every time someone commented about one, I’d decide on that one. Then I’d get another comment about another picture and I’d change my mind and want to go with that one. As you can imagine, I was pretty confused for a while. I really did love all the pictures, and I honestly would have been happy with any of them. But alas, I was only allowed to choose one.
Some mentioned that for most signing boards, the actual picture would not be written on, and instead there would be a white matte border reserved for the well wishes. I quickly confirmed with our photographers and found out that the signatures would actually be written directly on the picture. This helped a lot with our decision, and in the end we decided to go with the majority vote - we chose picture number 5:
