A Trip to the City

April 1st, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Gloss

Hey Hive! I’m looking for some suggestions.

One of my friends is luring me to the city (NY) this weekend with promises of underground martini bars, and I am hoping to pick up some wedding-related items and supplies while I’m down there. I’ve been told to check out Jamali Garden for my ’floral desires’. I’ll definitely be picking up one (maybe a few) of these:

A thorn-stripper, (useful for removing leaves as well), since we will probably be DIYing our flowers.
And potentially some urns for flowers.A Trip to the City : wedding decor reception Urns
I also definitely want to check out M&J Trimming as I am hoping to find some great stuff to make my garter, and maybe a fascinator, with. I’m also looking for great fabric for a veil - so maybe I’ll visit the famous Mood? I can’t decide whether I’m going to wear a traditional veil or a birdcage yet, so I’m thinking I’ll make both and either a) let you guys decide or b) see which one turns out better!

Do you have any suggestions as to where to go for wedding related shopping in NYC? Anywhere else I should check out while I’m down there?

I would suggest Pearl River Mart on Broadway between Grand & Broome. They always have interesting (and inexpensive) things. Plus, it’s in the heart of SoHo which is just plain good shopping!
Enjoy!

I have to disagree about Pearl River Mart. They are overpriced for their items. They have fancier things that are priced to gear towards tourists. If you have time to shop go into the heart of Chinatown and you can find the same things for MUCH cheaper.
There’s a reason they closed down their first location on Grand and kept the Broadway store. Cuz it’s in the heart of Soho’s shopping district which equals tourists willing to spend money.

Speaking of underground…go to: http://yakitoritaisho.com/ for good BBQ Japanese food. You won’t find much sushi though and it IS a hole in the wall but oh so good.
Go to http://www.venierospastry.com for coffee and some good cannoli, pastries, etc the East Village. Open LATE. have fun!

For ribbon, lace, trim etc Daytona Trim is super awesome. Mood is good, but soooo expensive! I could only afford fabric for my term garments when I lived in NY, and just barely! If you walk around the fashion district, you can browse all kinds of spots too.

Sposabella Lace on the west side. It’s a total hole in the wall, but they have a wide range of products at different price points, and the guys there know what they are doing.

Tons of fabric/trims stores all around 36th-40th streets and between 7th and 8th avenues. Mostly open on Saturdays from 9-5 ish, closed on Sundays.

Go to Chinatown and get $5 pashminas for all your BMs or OOT guests. I wish I could before my fall wedding. They would be such perfect favors for the ladies, too, if they were in my budget. Have fun!!!

Hey Miss Gloss,
Almost forgot you’re in Boston. Check out http://www.fungwahbus.com/default.aspx

Buses leaving almost every hour from Boston to NYC for $15 each way. Cant’ beat it! I’ve never taken it (haven’t been to Boston yet =( ) but the lines are always super long in Ctown at the peak of travel time. It drops you off in Ctown at Manhatten Bridge.

Gloss, I know this is a super late response (I’ve been traveling and not able to get to my Google reader) but if you haven’t already purchased a thorn stripper, I wouldn’t. I worked with flowers for a couple of years and found (especially for roses) it is better if you just take the thorn off yourself. Turn the rose sideways and use the force of your thumb you pop the thorn off. I say this only because thorn strippers often strip off more of the flower stem then just the thorn and it can cause the flower to wilt early. If you already bought one I would give it a trail run to make sure it doesn’t do that.
