The Cake

The Cake : wedding cake diy Cake03 image

When I first got engaged I was doing my daily blog-stalking, and found this great cake on The Ritzy Bee Blog. I just knew it was going to be our cake. I loved the proportions of the different tiers. HOWEVER, I was painfully aware that our budget would never allow for cakes like these. So here was my plan: FAKE CAKES.

Supplies Needed:

  • [18] 12″ Styrofoam discs at 1″ ea. (9 for each side cake)
  • [10] 8″ Styrofoam discs at 1″ ea. (middle tier of center cake)
  • [6] 6″ Styrofoam discs at 1″ ea. (top tier of middle cake)
  • Joint compound
  • Spray paint in our colors
  • 1 piece 3/32″ chipboard

Our plan of action:

We’ll purchase the bottom tier of the center cake from an actual baker so we can cut into it. Cake served to guests will be from sheet cakes in the back. The design might need to be paired down depending on the skill-level of whoever our half-cake baker will be.

We’ll glue together Styrofoam ’tiers’ and cover them with joint compound, then sand them smooth. After that we’ll paint them, and cut a pattern from the sheet of museum using a laser cutter. Then we’ll spray paint the pieces white and attach the fake cake tiers. If you don’t have access to a laser-cutter to make super tiny precise cuts, you could also use puff paint (I’m pretty sure they still sell that stuff)!

We’ll see if it actually goes down like that. Test run required.

Are you planning on doing something slightly out of the norm when it comes to your cake?

Nice! I love this idea as I can’t bring myself to spend multiple hundreds of dollars on dessert anyway…

I am contemplating rent a cake. It looks a lot more cost effective.

I am in the process of making our fake cake the same way. Be sure not put the joint compound too thick or it will crack!

I don’t know much about fake cakes, but those are some of the most gorgeous cakes I’ve ever seen!

Too funny, the words laser cutter and wedding cake in the same post:). Very resourceful.

I’d be nervous about spray painting styrofoam; I can’t imagine it would look very cake-y. Am definitely curious to see your final product!

@phruphru: She’s not spray painting the styrofoam, she’s covering it over to make it look like yummy frosting! :-D
