Wiki of the Day: Hidden Costs

April 1st, 2009 @ 3:46 pm by Wiki

On the heels of Mrs. Cherry Pie’s great budget post yesterday, we thought we’d follow up with today’s wiki: Hidden Costs. Hidden costs apply to not only bride and groom, but also the wedding party and wedding guests as well.

If you’ve ever been a bride, groom, wedding party member, or even a guest at a wedding, you can help us fill up the wiki! What hidden costs of have you experienced surrounding weddings? Are there ways you can avoid or lessen such costs? If you’ve run into costs that shocked or surprised you, add them to the wiki:

If you’re unsure how you can contribute to the wiki, take a peek at this wiki article on how to edit a wiki. Check it out and share your expertise! Or, if you’re shy, just leave your tips in the comments, and we can add them to the wiki for you!

I don’t know if they’re HIDDEN, but there a lot of costs I don’t like to price into the budget: wedding magazines bought full price on the spur of the moment, airplane tickets and rental cars and hotels if you’re having a wedding somewhere far away and you need to find out a place for your reception, hair trials, bridal portraits and having your hair and flowers done for the portrait, parking passes for the guests, $100 for the wedding planner to return our rented cake stand.

One big hidden cost we weren’t aware of was an $11/guest surcharge at our reception that was called an “alcohol tax”. B/c we have an open bar, we have to pay the state of Kentucky $11/guest to serve them.

postage x 3 (invitations, reply cards and thank you cards)…easily adds up to over $100.
