Am I a Short Hair Bride?!

April 2nd, 2009 @ 5:34 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

I thought I had a pretty firm idea as to what I wanted my hair to look like on our wedding day. I even posted a few favorites of mine that I’ve seen online, and they’ve all fallen into a “structured bun” category. I think brides often feel that if they don’t have hair down to the derriere in preparation for the wedding day, then they’re out of luck. I’ve felt it too, as I continue to grow it out and refuse to snip off more than the very ends.

However, Wed in the White City got me thinking about this whole hair thing this week (thank you for sharing your hair plans and cute new ’do!). She took control of her locks and got the cutest bob, and then shared her inspiration for her wedding day hair. I love it!

I’ve been hating my hair for months now and keep on telling myself that after the wedding, I’ll be free to chop it off. I’m no stranger to short hair—I think throughout college I tried out every length from 2 inches on down—so I keep on dreaming about the sassy cute cut I’ll have. But what if I don’t have to wait? I still have 5 1/2 months until the wedding, so I possibly have enough time to play around a bit. And if I take inspiration pictures with me, I can at least tell my stylist that I need a cut that could do this or that.

So, I’ve gathered some inspiration. I won’t lie—it’s difficult to find good styles for short hair. But what I did find, I was pleasantly surprised with!

Style #1: Elegant Chignon
I love how this feels a little bit 1960s. It’s simple, and yet has some great volume to it. I’m no stylist, but I don’t think you need a lot of length to get this accomplished!

Style #2: Short Hair Bun
What?! I can get the look of a bun without having long, flowing locks? Sign me up! I love this - it’s very refined and pulled together. It’s very similar to what I’ve been wanting.

Style #3: Curly Up Do

Hmm. Maybe a little prom-like? But again, I love that I’m finding a variety of options out there for short hair updos.

Style #4: Roaring ’20s ’Do

I definitely don’t think I could pull this off, and it doesn’t really scream “wedding hair” to me, but I thought it was too cute not to share. If you’re doing an Art Deco-themed wedding or something along those lines, I think this would be a fabulous option!

Checking out all of these options is making my fingers itch to dial my stylist and let her chop my hair off! I’ve been getting so antsy for a change, and when you consider that I’ve been engaged for over a year now, the restraints for keeping my hair long have been in place for quite some time. I still hesitate… I want to love my hair on the day of the wedding. However, I need to keep reminding myself that just because my hair doesn’t hit my shoulders, I can still do something that is elaborate and gorgeous.

So now, what’s a girl to do? Should I chop my hair off or continue to grow it?

I’m currently growing my hair out. It’s nearing chin-length, while I’ve sported a variety of buzz cuts, pixie cuts, and short bobs for the last 4 years or so. I’m growing frustrated with it already, and I have 6 months to go until the wedding. At times I’m tempted to just chop it all off again. That being said, style #4 is in fact very similar to what I’m going for, so I’m just getting it long enough to be able to create some waves and volume with my very fine straight hair.. not to sport an updo, thank goodness. I’m sure I’ll probably get a trim or two again before the wedding.

I saw go for it! You’ll still have plenty of options with your hair.

My hair’s quite long, and I actually found at my trial that I had too much hair … there seemed to be this giant ball of hair at the back of my head!

I say cut it, if not “chop” it. When I read your post, what stood out is that you hate your hair now, and can’t wait to have hair that you love after your wedding. Why get married with hair you hate? Even if you have a medium-length bob, it is plenty to work with if you want, and it’s not like a drastic Mia Farrow cut. Also, I am in favor of anyone willing to challenge the long hair tyrrany! Who says you have to have long hair to get married (especially if you hate your long hair)!?!?

Now, if only someone could find me some good bridal hair for bangs + ears that stick out. Sigh.

Um, I just want to say thank you for posting your inspiration shots….the first one is exactly what I want and couldn’t find a picture of anywhere. Stealing it! Also, I say chop! I really love short haired brides, and knowing that you have such a lovely floaty dress to go with, I think a cute, sassy short do would be awesome!

I’m going to be a short haired bride! Right now it’s a slightly overgrown pixie and as much as I want to grow it out (I have 5-months, so I could get a bit of length) I realized that more than having a snazzy hair-do it’s important to feel like ‘you’.

I’ve been thinking of cutting my hair and I just might go for it since I’ve seen your inspiration pics! Besides, I have 6 more months to grow it!

Talk to your stylist to make sure she can do something with short hair and then go for it! The first two and the art deco ones are super cute!

If you’re anything like me you are going to go nuts w/o a hair cut for that long. I say cut and go with style #2 :)

I say cut it…if you are unhappy now, and there are cute options with short hair (I love style #1) then go ahead!

how about you cut it slightly and then a bit more (gradually) until you’re at a length you’re happy with?

chopping it may be too drastic, IMO :)

Okay I am going against the trend here and saying grow it out. But I have 3 reasons:

1) You are a little less than six months out. Can you 100% without a doubt guarantee yourself that you will not find another inspiration picture that you love even more than the short hair ones?

2) once cut it, it is gone and the only option you have to get it back is extensions. And really good extensions are uber expensive (any where from several hundred to over a thousand). And extensions are in my opinion very uncomfy.

3) For most updos longer hair is just easier to work with. I am not saying down to your behind length but something about the level of your shoulder blades.

Consult who ever is styling your hair before you do anything drastic.

BTW: I do think the pictures are oh so cute!

The short hair bone is so fun! What a great idea! If you’re truly unhappy with your hair, I say cut it!
