Boys Need Flowers Too

April 2nd, 2009 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Mascara

In the form of a boutonniere, that is! I’m a fan of simple ones with green hypericum berries for our ring bearers, because you know they are going to destroy them by the end of the night, anyway!

(source)

Next up, the groomsmen. We’ll be keeping it simple for them too, adding in a few button mums (possibly in purple, green, or a mix) to add some color. Nothing too elaborate, just something to dress us their collars a little.

(source)

Lastly and most importantly, we have the groom, of course! The Mr. will be wearing a different bout’ than the rest of the gents, containing a purple dahlia and probably more of the same hypericum berries to tie them all together.

(source)

All that’s left to decide is who will be making them! I have a florist, but I feel like these would be so simple to make. And with an estimate of around $12 per bout from our florist, it’s worth it to try. I’ll be sure to post an update when I do.

Is anyone else considering making their own boutonnieres?

So great. Be careful with the dahlias. My florist says they are too delicate for a bout. Maybe try a mum. Just a thought.

Oh wow! Where did you find that pic? I LOVE hypercum berries and thought of using it as bouts also and in my bouquets.
I wonder how they will look as a backdrop?

What are you planning to do for the father of the bride, ushers, and other people like that in the wedding party?

We will be making all the flower arrangements for our wedding. We got an array of silk flowers in our colors and will work some kind of magic on them. Lucky for me my BFF used to work in a florist shop

The fiance refuses to wear a flower and doesn’t want any of the guys wearing a bout…saves me money I guess!

I love the mums though…soooo pretty!

I say do a trial run and then see what you think. I’ve seen some good tutorials.

I agree with Miss Duckling - do a trial run! I love the berries and the look of button mums! Do you happen to have a wholesale flower market in your area? Might be worth the early morning trip over there to get flowers really cheap! You can also look around to see what they have to give you more ideas!

I did! I had done them in high school for prom, so I knew it wasn’t hard.

I did a trial run with my mom, who helped me with the real ones. I watched videos on youtube to get reacquainted with the proper technique. We planned on making them the afternoon before the wedding, so I “used” the trial ones like the real ones to make sure they would store okay.

I put each in a small ziplock with some air blown in (so the bag is puffy and protects the flower) and kept them in the fridge. FYI - I found that they couldn’t be too close to the cool vent, or they froze/turned brown.

I recommend making extras, just in case. All of ours were fine, but the bestman’s bloom fell off during the reception. He has two small children that he was constantly holding, so I think it would have happened even with a professional bout. We didn’t bother doing anything about it, but I was relieved to know that we could have switched it with an extra if it had happened before the photos or ceremony.

This is pretty much exactly what we’re doing for our bouts (Except the dahlias….button mum for West Coast Groom and berries only for the other groomsmen). And yes, we’re doing our own. Honestly, real flower bouts are very easy to make and if you’re going simple, and have time and patience the day before your wedding, it’s a money saver to do it yourself. There are lots of DIY tutorials on line.

I’m in Colombia right now and saw an awesome bout made from coffee beans (which are green/red before they’re roasted!!) It was truly awesome looking!!

There are tons of tutorials online and it’s so easy! My mom and I always made my date’s (who is now my fiance!) bouts for all of our dances in high school and they always turned out well!

My aunt and I are DIYing all the flowers. For some reason I thought bouts would be hard, but I tried making one out of button mums and it was so EASY! They are really hardy little flowers too, so you don’t really have to worry too much them bruising or getting crushed while you’re making the bouts or when the guys are wearing them.

I love the berries too! We’ll probably use those in either groom or groomsmen bouts.
