About Mrs. Peep Toe

When I first started blogging, I talked about throwing a green wedding, and how with each decision we’ve asked ourselves: Is it green enough?

I thought it was about time that I check in with that question and spend a few days (or weeks) in honor of Earth Day this month to provide a central source of new and used ways to green your big day!

Let’s start from the very beginning and work our way through the planning process.

While I assume that you are addicted to reading Weddingbee because you are already engaged, you may still be looking for that sparkling engagement ring, or you are looking for a wedding band.

I have four eco-friendly options for you to check out:

1. Brilliant Earth

2. Elizabeta Jewelry - I personally love this ring:

I've Got Chic, But Do I Have Eco? : wedding rings 15 1

3. You could also always do what the fabulous Miss Joey did and ask for a vintage ring. A stunning option!

4. Or, you could always do what Mr. Peep did and forgo the diamond and look for another gemstone (while other gemstones are not totally controversy free, gems like sapphires are often mined in countries that are more politically stable than where diamonds are mined).

And just in case you already have your own sparkler, make it Conflict Neutral and donate 1% of the cost of your diamond.

Now that you have a sparkler on your finger, let’s talk about the location!! The easiest way to go green on this choice is to have both the ceremony and reception venue in the same location.

I've Got Chic, But Do I Have Eco? : wedding rings 41 4

If it just isn’t possible to hold both the ceremony and reception at the same location, try to hold them near each other, or provide vans or buses to carpool guest from one site to the next. You have many eco-friendly options; San Francisco has a great eco-friendly bus/limo service, and in a pinch, a lot of taxis are going green by driving hybrids.

In picking a location, don’t forget to ask if your event space uses eco-friendly practices. The most basic options include basic recycling (you’d be surprised at how many venues don’t do this, or are just starting to), local and organic food, recycled paper products, compact florescent light bulbs, reduced water and electricity usage, etc… the list goes on.

Mr. Peep and I are hosting our wedding at a JDV Hotel, which is committed to green events!

If you can’t have your wedding at a green venue, maybe you can have your wedding night at a green hotel. Here’s a list of the top 10 eco-friendly hotels in the US!! And please take note: both Kimpton and Marriott hotels are moving green!

Here’s a pic of a sustainable hotel room key. Cool huh??

Just in case you can’t wait for my next eco-friendly-paper-free post, read this article from the NY Times a couple years ago, and follow up with my go-to green wedding website: Portovert. It’s a good first look at green vendors in your area. And finally, spend some time catching up on the Eco-Chic Weddings Blog.

Up next, eco-friendly invitations!! And finally, a peek into the Peeps’ invites!

Oooh oooh! Our wedding is green and I didn’t even know it! Our ceremony and reception are in the same place. Way to go, me!

Green Karat is another great place for eco-jewelry. They will custom design a ring for you using man-made diamonds and recycled platinum.

My ering stone is lab created, no conflict gems on that baby! My venue hosts both the ceremony and reception, and all of our invites are printed on recycled paper. :-) We also rented out a B&B for EVERYONE to stay at the night before. It’s a small business but they use vintage china to serve meals (no paper/plastic!) with cloth napkins. The room keys are all actual keys, and they recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal! Yay. When I first started planning I was hoping we could blog about all our green choices, but {shrug} the only one reading my blog is me LOL!

We’re all about using local produce and food options for our reception — local cod tastes just as amazing as mahi mahi, because it’s super fresh!

I also we were being more green. I couldn’t have my ceremony and reception at the same place for I needed to be married at a church but now I’m going to email our consultation at reception hall and make sure they do all they can! Thanks!

That ring is really beautiful!
We’re having our ceremony and reception at the same place and I believe my caterer use green practices… if I remember correctly.
I didn’t know Marriott was moving toward being greener, that makes me happy :) FH gets a sweet Marriott discount, so we stay there all the time.

just a word of caution about the ‘other gems’: sapphires and rubies, for example, often come from Burma (Myanmar) where the ruling junta is guilty for a whole slew of human right abuses too - most prominent being holding Aung San Suu Kyi prisoner for the past what, 20 years?, and recently the plight of the Rohingya peopl also came to light.

i would recommend that brides try for a heirloom piece or estate jewlry to avoid creating demand for gems where possible.

@mrspaetz: I agree. I tried to put in a disclaimer that gemstones aren’t perfect. A great way to know more is to ask your jeweler where your stone has been mined. I wish I saved the articles that I read on this subject but a little bit of google research on this topic goes a long way. Good luck.

I am having my wedding ring made by an Etsy seller SingleBBeautiful, with recycled white-gold and conflict-free diamonds!

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6258539

She also uses other types of recycled metal too. And great affordable prices! She can custom-make a lot of things. Highly recommended!

Another eco friendly alternative (that I don’t think has been mentioned here…) is “recycling” a pre-existing diamond and having a new setting created.

My grandmother left me a diamond pin that I cherish but would NEVER wear.. It is not at all my style. Instead of having it sit in my jewelry box, I am going to have a ring setting made for the diamond, using recycled gold as well. I feel great about this option, and will continue to have memories of my grandmother when I look down on my beautiful ring, instead of feeling guilt when I look at that gaudy pin that I would never wear.

I am working with jewelry designer Liza Shtromberg to create this new piece.
