Mrs. Cowboy Boot's Picture
Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Now that I had my heart set on a designer gown–the Amy Michelson had spoken to me–I had to figure out how I could get one. At a discount.

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Alvinav

A consignment Alvina Valenta. $2,300 from $4,631

I mentioned that I grew up in LA and that I love to shop in boutiques. What I didn’t disclose, though, is that I love to shop boutique sales. Sample sales. Factory sales. All of the wonderful benefits of living in a major fashion metropolis (LA or New York) that you don’t get elsewhere include designer duds at deep discounts. If you know where to look, of course.

A consignment Watters & Watters. $650 from $1,200.

So, I launched my search for discount wedding dresses and started scheming up ways I could get one for less. Of course, I kept my eye on OnceWed.com’s resale listings and Preownedweddingdresses.com. I even found the Nicole Miller (Dress #6) on Once Wed in my size. But every time I came across a dress I liked, I had trouble convincing myself to buy it. Either it was not returnable (not a chance!), it had been hemmed and was returnable but I’d have to pay for shipping (which isn’t cheap), or–the biggest problem–it was still brand new. Some would say a brand-new wedding dress being resold might be tainted with bad juju. I don’t necessarily believe this (some girls just find a second “right” dress and sell the first), but I still couldn’t bring myself to put my credit card number down.

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Badgley

A consignment Badgley Mischka. $2,500 from $7,910.

That was when I came upon Julie Jones and her online consignment shop, Encore Bridal. The reason I liked Encore Bridal (over the two similar online shops above) is that Julie is based out of Manhattan Beach, California, and will set up shop for you at a few locations around town so you can try on the dresses you’re most interested in. And she has an amazing selection. Right now on her site she has Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera and Alvina Valenta all for less than $2,000!!

I met Julie at A Legendary Affair, a showroom for wedding and party planning. She was one of the sweetest people I’d met so far (showing up for a private dress try-on session!) and I wanted to buy a dress from her just because she wasn’t pushy and she was completely honest, which I loved.

Now, onto the dresses. Please excuse my wet hair. I came straight from surfing to the dress try-on (with a shower at the beach in between!). That’s what happens when you make me try on dresses in Manhattan Beach! I go surfing.

Dress #1:

Vera Wang Couture

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Pa2507301

This ivory taffeta dress was very pretty. I love the train! It was soft and feminine. It had tufts of taffeta running down the side–you can see them a little in the bottom picture. But it wasn’t form-fitting at all. It was a little frumpy. I apologize for the bad picture quality. We didn’t figure to take pictures out of the doorway right off the bat (!).

Dress #2:

Marisa 737

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Marisa Encore Bridal

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Pa2507302

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Pa2507303

This was the dress that surprised me in photographs. I liked it okay in the store, but then when I saw the photo I thought to myself, maybe I should be going for a mermaid/trumpet style after all. It seemed to flatter my body a bit more than the A-line dresses I’d been drawn to. Nonetheless, Julie muttered a phrase that no dress-seller should ever tell a bride (I think): “This is one of Marisa’s most popular styles.” This made me think of the hundreds of other brides who already owned this dress. I really wanted something unique, and even though this was pretty, it didn’t feel like… me.

Dress #3:

Junko Yoshioka Jacqueline

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Junkode

Encore Bridal

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Junkode01

Encore Bridal

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Pa2507304

The Dress Hunt (Part 3 of 4) : wedding wedding dress Pa2507305 This was almost it, girls. I almost bought this dress. I hadn’t heard of Junko Yoshioka but I loved the layer of taffeta on the skirt and bodice. The lace that goes from the bottom of the bodice onto the top of the skirt and the velvet/satin thin ribbon at the waist made me swoon. I felt like a princess in this dress. I was SO close to buying this that it actually opened me up to spending more on a dress than I thought I was going to. This dress was $2,500 and I loved it so much, I was willing to drop the dough. That was a big uh-oh, though, because it also opened up a whole new world of dresses that I “couldn’t afford” just 30 minutes before meeting Ms. Jacqueline.

Did you open up your budget at all for one dress? Did any dresses surprise you in photographs that you weren’t too keen on when trying them on?

Ooo, that Junko Yoshioka is gorgeous! You said tafetta, but what’s the overlay fabric?

My favorite on you is the Marisa and I also love trains that has the first layer go beyond the under layer.
Although I do love the details of the Junko Yoshioka and I think they ALL look fab on you.

P.S. Ms CBs! Surfer chick! SEXY.

I can’t wait to see which dress you go with! So much suspense!

Yep…A Marisa 737 dress owner here. I only went to one boutique, and that was the cheapest line they carried. It was still way more than I wasplanning on spending, but I was so not into dress shopping. I admire all of you ladies who have the stamina. Although lots of people have told me how popular that style is, I still love her. Plus, I have yet to see her in any wedding I’ve been to. Love that Junko, though! You’re too lovely!

I ended up spending twice what my original budget was but I am so glad I did. I would have absolutely regretted wearing my original dress and have not looked back since I bought the new one. I was going to purchase it used but my FI insisted I get the new one since this day is so important to me. He thought the use of the used one would not bring good vibes into the marriage. I am glad he was onboard for it though, and I have decided to sell it after we get married. It is my dream dress! The last one looks beautiful on you, but you looked great in all the dresses!

Hi Miss Cowboy Boot;

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the marisa 737 on you!!! excellent!! SAME EXCAT thing happened to me: I liked it OK. in the store then I put it on I still was not sure but when see it in the picture I realized how beautifull it look! very feminene and elegant! as I mentioned before you have beautifull body and this gown shows it in an elegant way. I bought the marisa 737 couple months ago and I negotiated with the shop owner (I know it is not common in this country but it is very common where I am from,Istanbul, even my fiance surprised with the price end of the negatiation.)
well other dresses you have tried looks georgeous too but the most elegant on you was marisa 737. In terms of being so popular I have never seen in any bridal blogs or I have never seen in even once wed anyone else is selling it. I am looking forward to see what you got!
Huggsss

ooooooooooohhh…I love the marisa! However, I understand your feelings about buying a dress that is so popular. Have you thought about looking for the same silhouette by another designer? The trumpet shape is truly stunning on your petite figure!

we must have the same body type (5′2″ too!) - I feel like I’m looking at my own dress shopping photos!
BTW- what do you surf, long or shortboard? HOW do you handle not being able to surf in NM? That’s the thing I hated the most about my own move to the land of eternal sand.
can’t wait to hear what dress you decided on!

Oh! Junko is one of my favorite designers. I tried on a few of Junko’s dresses before I got mine but they were WAY above a reasonable budget (like $6000 unreasonable). I would totally say to go for that one… it’s fabulous on you.

Oh! how tall are you? I am 5′2″ and I think this dress (marisa) flatters the petite women a lot!

@Miss Rye Bread: That’s why I have to surf when I’m home and in Manhattan Beach–I’m out of the water for so long, that’s all I do when I go home. I miss it. But I snowboard in the winter and mountain bike/raft in the summer, now.

WOW those dresses are stunning! I wish I’d know about Encore Bride, before I bought my dress, but then again I love my dress and probably would have bought it anyway.
I can’t wait to see which dress you ended up with :)

My wedding is a couple weeks away and guess what I’ll be wearing? Yes, the Marisa 737! You are what makes your dress unique. Nobody has ever seen YOU in that dress. And maybe you can add a little something - a sash or a broach, a shrug, veil, etc. There are so many other details that will make your day special that having a dress that nobody else has ever worn shouldn’t be an issue…(but that last one is amazing on you!!!)

Before reading what you wrote, I saw the picture and thought ‘She looks like a princess’! haha :D

Nope, I actually snagged an amazing deal for my dress. Timing of everything was just right, and I’ve never made a better $37.50 investment.
